New playstation version to go on sale
Next month a new 80 gig version of PS3, will go on sale for $599. I believe starting today the 60 gig version was reduced to $499. I am not surprised about this since the Wii has continued to outsell PS3, and there is talk of Microsoft decreasing their prices (and the Xbox Elite sells for $479).

This should probably be in Tilted Gaming. Anyway, I think this will be good for Sony and this 80 gig version will also come with a retail copy of "MotorStorm." I think they'll be announcing all this at E3 and I also see M$ following in their footsteps, possibly dropping the price on the Pro 360 package.

1) I wonder if the $499 60 gig version of the PS3 is going to be dropped eventually like Sony dropped the 20 gig version. If you don't care about MotorStorm you can buy the 60gig version and upgrade to an 80 gig hard drive for your PS3 for cheaper than $100 or for slightly more than $100 you can get 160 gigs.
Also, the new $599 system is going to use software emulation to play all PS2 titles. It's supposed to have less backwards compatibility than the 60 gig version currently for sale in North America. That’s another reason to go with the $499 version if you want a PS3 imo. 2) M$ hasn't announced a price cut and I'm willing to bet money they won't till after the launch of their biggest title(s): Halo 3 and GTA IV. Let those games move units at full retail price and then cut $50-100 of the system in time for the holidays.

If I had the money I'd be buying one now with the price cut.

Dropping the original $500 SKU and then re-adding it doesnt really seem like a legitimate price drop. Its more like adding value.
Still, I really would rather not reinforce the idea of $499 as a legitimate price point for a game machine. Thats still way the hell out there. |

Since videogames were released, videogame prices have technically went down due to the prices never really going up considering inflation. I still remember paying $80 for SNES games in the early 90s and $70-$80 for N64 games in the mid to late nineties. Game prices aren't that high now, 10 years later, after inflation has already lessed the value of a dollar by another 25%. The only reason the PS3 seems so damned expensive is because its competitors are cheaper. Nintendo packed a motion controller on top of an overclocked Gamecube and sold it for $250. That makes $500 and definitely $600 look absurd even though the $250 pricepoint is really what's absurd.

Turns out this price drop is fake. Its really a clearance of the 60 gig inventory, then its no more and the only thing thats left is the 80 gig motorstorm bundle.

When I saw this, I died laughing. I thought Sony had finally changed their mirandus operandi. However, in the end I'm not surprised. Still $100 is a nice drop while it lasts.
Edit: Maybe once the 60gig all clear out the 80gig will be dropped in price to $499. Sounds smart to me, but I'd be pissed if I was one of the people that bought MotorStorm for $100...

I think the PS3 is worth every penny. I now own box the 360 and the PS3, my 360 is broken (obviously, since so many of them do) but I'll be sending it in for repairs since they extended the warranty on them. I would have to say that I prefer the PS3 in terms of pure hardware. It is just a better piece of equipment. The games are coming for it. The end of this year and 2008 looks GREAT for the PS3. I don't think I will be using my 360 for anything other than Halo 3.
For those of you out there on the fence I would definitely take advantage of the price drop while you can. Funny enough, I bought my PS3 a month or two ago from the Sony Store and they were having a sale on them so I already got mine for $50 off. I found that quite surprising, but oh well!

2008 is months away, mean while MS and Nintendo are launching AAA exclusive titles this year. I can hold off on the PS3 for the next price drop or two and not be bothered one bit. Heck, by then the AAA Sony titles should have dropped in price too.

The PS3 is great for so many reasons...it's a great value as a Blu-Ray player, which is what I mainly use mine for. The new systems updates let you use the PS3 as a wireless media center now, which is also awesome (I know the 360 has similar capability). It's just a great machine - I would buy one again in a heartbeat.

There are many other games that look to be incredible that are coming for the 360 besides Halo 3. Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, BioShock, GTA IV to name a few. I'm going to be broke this winter.

You just named the main sticking point for and against the PS3: the Blu Ray drive. I don't have a HD TV and I could careless about HD-DVD & Blu Ray movies. For people like you that want HD movies it is a great system/purchase. However, the PS3 is supposed to be a games console first and then movies and multi-media second. As long as the main focus is on "It's a multi-media center and Blu Ray movie player" and not video games, I don't want one. I'm sure there are plenty of people that feel just like me. Edit: *Crosses fingers for another price drop this holiday season.*

I look at my game machines like game machines. I dont want BR playback, I dont care about multimedia functionality, online functionality like DLC or online multiplayer. With the PS3, I'm not seeing an incredible value for just popping in a game and playing it - A game that is the same old game but with fresh coats of light bloom and HD texturing.
I'll remind you that if you look at history, tech for the value has never, ever had a positive relationship with marketshare success for gaming consoles. |

How can you not care about online multiplayer? It's such a huge part of gaming now.

Arg! Now I want a PS3! Just when I was going to go and buy a 360 or upgrade my computer. Well if I do get a 360 or a PS3 (I hope I will get both eventually)I need to buy a new TV as well.
My PS2 finally gave out recently, and I still have PS2 games I want to play, but I doubt I will be buying a new PS2, so maybe the PS3 is the way to go...

Who cares about 1000 dollars of hardware, though? Most of the people who say they love their PS3 feel that they have to justify themselves by saying things like "well, blu-ray" ... "..HD" ... "media center is teh hawt!!".
jvwgtr's post makes absolutely no mention of video games. Perhaps the PS3 is most loved as a home theater, not a video game console. This is not to say I don't think it doesn't have potential. It obviously has the capability to run amazing games, with all the hardware packed in there. When the great games start coming out, GTA4, MGS4, etc, I'll consider the PS3 more of a gaming console, and it'll probably be more succesful. But right now, none of the games seem to justify the $600 pricetag, even though the hardware might.

I definitely agree that not enough games are out for the PS3 just yet, however I feel that in the long run the PS3 will be the better of the big 2 (360 & PS3) in terms of games. There are a lot of great games coming out for the PS3 in the next few months. Most of the biggest games are on both consoles but the best exclusives (IMO) are coming for the PS3. It's just too bad that they aren't out already...
As for the arguement that it isn't valid to say that the PS3 has all kinds of other great features to justify the pricetag, I think that is foolish not to mention all the additional functionality you get for the money. The 360 is only about $100 cheaper and you don't get all of that stuff. IF the 360 came with all those features you would be saying the same thing. The fact is the PS3 has all of the game playing ability AND all the other stuff. Keep in mind that I have both consoles so I am not really biased one way or the other, I just think the PS3 is the better machine. If I had to choose only one it would be the PS3 hands down...

I'm still going to wait for the next price drop before I pick up a PS3. The most important reason is that I don't have $500 to spend on a new console (especially since I picked up a Wii in April and I can't justify buying another console for at least a couple more months). My PS2 works just fine as a DVD player and last-generation games are still fun.
There won't be any must-buy PS3 titles for me until MGS4 and FF13 come out next year. By then, I'm hoping that I can snag a PS3 for $400 or maybe less. I really want to play Little Big Planet too. |

I remember reading Sony is talking about the Playstation division should be breaking even by March 2008. The PS3 is currently costing a loss $200 per console sold. So... with those two things in mind, I don't see a price drop/clearance sale again anytime soon.
