Who cares about 1000 dollars of hardware, though? Most of the people who say they love their PS3 feel that they have to justify themselves by saying things like "well, blu-ray" ... "..HD" ... "media center is teh hawt!!".
jvwgtr's post makes absolutely no mention of video games.
Perhaps the PS3 is most loved as a home theater, not a video game console.
This is not to say I don't think it doesn't have potential. It obviously has the capability to run amazing games, with all the hardware packed in there.
When the great games start coming out, GTA4, MGS4, etc, I'll consider the PS3 more of a gaming console, and it'll probably be more succesful. But right now, none of the games seem to justify the $600 pricetag, even though the hardware might.
