Duke Nukem Forever Update!

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/01/du...ull-production
Quote:
Yes, folks, it's still alive and kicking - everyone's favorite vaporware is "in full production" according to George Broussard, co-founder of 3D Realms. In an interview with 1up, towards the end, Broussard chats about the status of Duke Nukem Forever, the unfortunately-apt title to the game over a decade in development. Hail to the King, baby!

According to Broussard, "there's a lot that's finished. All the guns are finished. Most of the creatures are finished...we're just basically pulling it all together and trying to make it fun."

So, there you have it, an actual status update on Duke Nukem Forever. If they get their act together, 2006 may be the year pigs fly - then again, we predicted that Duke Nukem Forever still would not come out in 2006, and whose to argue with us?
Still doesn't answer the question on why this game has taken the better part of a decade to get this far

I think they changed graphics engines like 10 times, so they have to start over and over.. Didn't it start out on the Unreal engine, which was back in 97-98 I think? I loved Duke 3D, but I don't think I really care if it gets released now or not.

I'm sure lots of people feel that way, but I'm one of those people that will mostly likely play the finished product just to see why the hell it took so long to finish.

I'll believe this game exists in any shape or form when it's in a box and I can play it. Until that point, it's all smoke up the ass. The old Duke Nukem games are beautiful things, but I remember looking forward to this game's RELEASE in high school, which is getting to be close to ten years ago. 3drealms apparently missed the memo about striking while the iron is hot.

I'm with Carn. I can't believe this is still even a prospect? I thought they ditched this YEARS ago. I mean, like 6 years ago they were making fun of how long it was taking to finish - holy shit.

They first started with the Quake2 engine then went to Unreal. And I guess every time Unreal was updated they switched. At this point who knows what they're using. I think anything less than the Unreal 3 engine would be a dissapointment.

The last trailer showed promise. Story line and writing has to be good for them to save face.

Well a version of the game was released on the Atari a while back, of course the cart could only play the title screen

Personally I'm betting one person is working on this between other projects just so the devs can say they finished Duke Nukem Forever. I mean this game was hyped more than Halo 2 for a while there.

Jesus. The "Duke Nukem Forever's coming out" announcement started to seem as old as AYBABTU. I guess they decided to add another layer of desilusionment to the project that never ends...if anyone cares enough to be desilusioned anymore..

I think even if it were most gamers will be so determined to hate it that it won't matter.

Vaporware: Better Late Than Never

Quote:
Ladies and gents, welcome to the 2005 Vaporware Awards -- the prize that celebrates the tech products that were promised last year but never delivered.

We have a few surprises this year -- wait 'til you find out the winner; you'll never guess what it is.

A number of products were nominated by only one reader, like the Kinetta Camera (which is apparently now shipping), or SBC's combo satellite TV/internet video service.

On the other hand, lots of people voted for Microsoft's Xbox 360. But even though it was in short supply, it's not strictly vaporware.

Lots of votes were cast for the nifty-looking Optimus keyboard -- a configurable keyboard with a little screen on each key to denote its function. Developed by a Russian design studio, it looked too good to be true, which is one of the classic makings of vaporware -- except for one thing: The company said it'll ship in 2006. A candidate for this year, perhaps?

Several wags nominated our vaporware story itself for an award. Yeah, we know it's late. Apologies for that. But we never promised it in 2005, so it wasn't eligible anyway.

Likewise, the PowerBook G5 is also ineligible. Apple may have occasionally hinted at it, but it never promised a ship date.

So, enough rambling. Without further ado, we give you the 2005 Vaporware Awards, in reverse order:

10. High-def TiVo and TiVoToGo for Mac
9. AlphaGrip ergonomic keyboard/trackball
8. Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs
7. Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms
6. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
5. StarCraft Ghost
4. Microsoft's Vista and Internet Explorer 7
3. Google -- betas galore
2. Phantom Game Service
1. Duke Nukem Forever

It's back! By popular demand, the winner of the 2005 Vaporware Awards is 3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever, the loooooooooooooong-awaited sequel to its popular Duke Nukem game.

What else could we do? Readers overwhelmingly voted the MIA title the vaporware champion.

The game came second in the 2000 Vaporware Awards, and won in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 we gave it a Lifetime Achievement Award, just to get it off the list.

But incredibly, the company says it's still in development -- nearly nine years after it was first announced. The official release date is "when it's done," according to the company's website.

Reader Greg Gemignani wrote: "Announced in 1997 and promised every year since, this game takes vaporware to new heights. Think about it, in just 13 months this game will have been in one form of development or another for a decade. This project started with a game based on the Quake 2 engine, then in 1999 it moved to the Unreal engine and has been stalled ever since. The 3D Realms site still lists it as the first game on its products page, the site still claims it will be released, and the FAQ on the game was updated early this year. Shouldn't Duke Nukem Forever get some place of honor for maintaining vaporware status for nearly a decade, particularly in the fast-paced market of FPS video games?"

Reader Tomas Björklund asked: "What other product can really compete with a product that was supposed to come out last millennium?!"

And reader Robert Danzinger said: "It's been in development for almost a fucking decade now. Give 3D Realms a medal or something."
Check out the link above for more detail on entries 2-10.

And yes, I am patiently awaiting TF2 and the Optimus keyboard.

while i totally get your point, you are avoiding what i am saying.
You know it would mean a total collapse of Western Civilization, of Capitalism. It is a sign that the world as we know it is ending. DN: Forever signal a new would of equality among the races. It would be a new age of utopian equality.

That or it will cause India and Pakistan to go at each other with the business ends of nuclear weapons plunging the world into 50 year winter.

Both seem equally plausible.
