could I please see a show of hands of those that may like to see that topic about "History of Sayings" be brought forth and started today? I'll need some help with it, though, because I have not yet come to find one all-encompassing resource (ie, website/blog) that has meandered into, and dedicated themselves to thi aim.

I think the first phrase I should try to track down the origins to is "the Ghost in the Machine".

(this topic of mine has stayed in the back of mind for over four years now, when just by happenstance, I noticed on the shelf of my fairly attractive psychology professor friend's bookcase a dusty old book that had very antiquated relics of speech, and where and when they came into the popular vernacular of casual conversations amongst English practioners. The only entry I read in the book was something about a saying on candles, or the light from them, I think, before I hastily put it back in its place. With my fondness for knowledge, I'm not sure why I didn't just "borrow" the book at the time.)

The ghost in the machine distinguished the mind from the body - said to have been coined by Gilbert Ryle in 1949. I wonder about the nature of memory, often, but that one was in there, so I'll wonder again.

(Etymology)

...getting a life might have originally had something to do with getting another life as in the video games when your little guys got knocked off. I used to hear kids asking how many lives the other guy had left, etc. I'll 'get a life' if I ... So the expression or words 'get a life' could have fist appeared, in the 80's, but not quite with its present connotations.

It may next (or concurrently) have begun to be used by computer geeks who would spend hours on end at their terminals, and their PC became their life. They would be told kiddingly, or not so kiddingly, by friends, family, and other hackers to 'get a life.' No definite documentation or dates for this, however.

The first big-time use of the word in the media was in a 1987 Saturday Night Live skit in which William Shatner, Captain Kirk of Star Trek, does a parody on Trekkie fans. In the sketch, he is the guest of honor at a Star Trek convention. He is asked by fanatical fans wearing pointy ears, several trivia questions concerning the exact combinations of safes he had opened on various episodes (e.g. what was the combination to the safe in episode #38?). He tells these people at the end of the skit to 'move out of your mothers basement' and GET A LIFE...

From the Jargon Dictionary: Get a life! imperative. Hacker-standard way of suggesting that the person to whom it is directed has succumbed to terminal geekdom (see computer geek). Often heard on Usenet, esp. as a way of suggesting that the target is taking some obscure issue of theology too seriously. This exhortation was popularized by William Shatner on a 1987 "Saturday Night Live" episode in a speech that ended "Get a life!", but some respondents believe it to have been in use before then. It was certainly in wide use among hackers for years before achieving mainstream currency via the sitcom "Get A Life" in 1990.

Very nice. Very nearly left me speechless, but here I am responding.

I'll be back in a bit, and hopefully, probably, and with good luck timing on my side, I'll hash out the details, forewords and whatever else I believe I may need to start the topic and get it spinning (like a top... I used to love tops) from here on out.

Last word: I'm not very creative at thinking up good thread titles, and I have a certain predilection that I don't start threads without one in mind; so, do you think that "The History of Sayings" is as good as it gets, or do you have any ideas to rearranging the title so it fits perfectly with the premise? I'm all ears for any suggestions. (like should 'coined' appear in the title, or the thread's opening description?)

hi everyone. Our neighborhood is also quite quiet on weekends during summer. Many seem to leave to go to the shore or up the mountains, which is a perfect reason for me to stay here. Our borough is having their fireworks tomorrow and they are usually some of the best around here, not to mention they let you sit really really close.

When we were younger,
weekend exodus we did,
attempting escape.

Being in town on the weekends is often more peaceful than campgrounds or traffic or in-laws, so in retrospect it seems it might have been a silly practice to join the crowd so often.

On and off since it was opened in 1963 King of Prussia Mall has been the largest mall in the world, but currently it is not. I generally hate malls but the "Plaza" part is a nice stroll, moreso than the "Court" part.
