OH. My. Gods.
I'm no professional, but my armchair psychology analysis: OCD. (that's obsessive compulsive disorder to all you non-armchair analysts.) Serious case. She needs some help, like pronto.
Wow. I thought MY mom was a packrat!

She's clearly unwell.

I don't know about OCD, though, Jess. I think an OCD sufferer would go nuts jus looking at that mess. As I understand it, mostly OCDers are total neat-freaks and have a real problem with disorder.

I think his mom is cool. I can make this judgement just by the fact that we are both packrats and that she had some SouthPark magnets on her fridge.

the term is hoarding. it is now recognized as a serious mental illness.

Oprah did a couple shows on it.
http://www2.oprah.com/tows/pastshows...20050506.jhtml

answer the following questions to see if you might be a hoarder:
http://www2.oprah.com/tows/pastshows...041118_c.jhtml

we have a friend whose home we've never seen in the 21 yrs we've lived here. he cannot even get cable tv, because that would mean allowing the cable guy to come into his home. i can only imagine that his place looks much similar to the ebay woman's home. sorry kids, i just can't laugh at this one. i think it's incredibly sad.

There's actually a company that offers a service for "hoarder" sufferers. They come in, clothed in tox-suits, and literally remove everything and steam-clean the house.

Let me see if I can dig up the link.

It's amusing if it's not you or your loved ones.

Is hoarding a kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Right now, compulsive hoarding is considered by many researchers to be a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, for some people, compulsive hoarding may also be related to:

Impulse control disorders (such as impulsive buying or stealing)

Depression

Social anxiety

Bipolar disorder

Certain personality traits
ratbastid - in my unprofessional opinion, it's definitely a OCD kind of thing - not all OCD is about keeping things clean and neat. That's just what we've heard of most. OCD is about any action and/or thought pattern that you MUST go through in spite of any consequences. It's not about keeping things clean per se - it's that you cannot leave the bathroom until you've washed x number of times. It's that you cannot see item x on eBay without buying it. You cannot throw out x, it must be stored. Your mind is sort of stuck on a hamster wheel of patterns.

So what if Oprah says I'm a compulsive hoarder. If we all agree not to watch her show then it isn't a problem -right?

I think I already did that. My solution is that someday I will make enough to pay "cleaning women" to open up my ebay boxes and organize them. If the house gets to small because of all the crap I collect -then just buy another house. Yes, the two houses idea works out really well.

I don't really know why, but I came up w/this theory years ago. It has worked for me, and those in my family that choose to use it: If you havn't used it in the past 6 months, and don't plan on using it in the next 6 months, it's gone. Simple as that. I can understand packrats from the 30's - but their time is gone.

There have been, at times in my life, parts of my various apparments that looked like that.

The term there is 'lazy slob' though

It wasn't that I wanted to keep anything, I was just to lazy to do anything about it. After a while it would get to me and I'd go into a all day orgy of throwing things away.

This woman is most obviously 'nuts' and yes needs serious help.
