Is hoarding a kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Right now, compulsive hoarding is considered by many researchers to be a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, for some people, compulsive hoarding may also be related to:

Impulse control disorders (such as impulsive buying or stealing)

Depression

Social anxiety

Bipolar disorder

Certain personality traits
ratbastid - in my unprofessional opinion, it's definitely a OCD kind of thing - not all OCD is about keeping things clean and neat. That's just what we've heard of most. OCD is about any action and/or thought pattern that you MUST go through in spite of any consequences. It's not about keeping things clean per se - it's that you cannot leave the bathroom until you've washed x number of times. It's that you cannot see item x on eBay without buying it. You cannot throw out x, it must be stored. Your mind is sort of stuck on a hamster wheel of patterns.
