getting fired and unemployment
Hello, I have been working for the same company since i got out of school and i can't stand it anymore, its been 6 years and i have had enough of there shit. I know that i should be happy to have a job in this uncertain time but I very much want to leave and look for other employment and spend more time with my new baby. Now here is the question. How can you get fired or quit properly so you can qualify for unemployment?
My wife recently went back to work and I would like to spend sometime at home with my 10 month little girl. According to what I know that this is not a proper reason to qualify. Any idea's on how i could get fired and still qualify? sorry if these sounds sleazy, but i can't afford to not get any income and want to spend some time with my little girl before i look for other work. thanks for any info! oh and i live in ontario if that helps. |

I'm not really sure if there is any way at all in getting fired and still collecting unemployment, even if you quit i'm not sure that you will qualify..I could be wrong though.
You don't get much on unemployment, I get like 500 bi weekly..I have been on layoff since november, and feeding of that roach of a government feels good for a change. Just out of curiosity, what High school did you go to? I'm assuming thats you in your avatar right? you look familiar, I lived down in london for about 5 years..attended Beal SS, Lived around Adelaide & Kipps Lane. Sorry..Not much help, but i hope it all works out for ya.

You do not qualify for unemployment if you quit.
You should look into taking parental leave. You can split the 12 months of support with your spouse or take it all for yourself... of course now that she is 10 months old this might not be an option. You could do what my wife did when my son was born... she started a daycare in our house. She worked with a placement agency. They collect the payment from the parents and pay you... The benefit being you don't have to find customers and they pay you even if the parents don't. This isn't a traditional job choice for a guy but it does let you stay home with your kid while making some money.

Years ago you could quit a job and receive pogy (with a few weeks penalty), but I'm sure this has been changed.
Get another job that allows you to work nights. You can spend you days tending your baby while not ripping off the system.

thank you for all the idea's. just gonna quit, don't care if i get umemployment or not, spending time with my daughter at this early age is just more important. I want a career change anyway and my current job does not allow me to look for employment while i work there. i've never not had a job, should be an interesting to be a stay at home dad for a bit.

Hell, if you can afford it, do it! If you need to rationalize it, figure out what you would have to pay for childcare and that is the amount you are saving by staying home...

oh i am trying to convince myself big time! I've always collected a pay check, i've always been the working spouse while my wife went though school and stayed home with the baby. i think i am just scared of not having a job or a paycheck. we can swing it, but i am more worried about changing careers after, i currently work as an admin/database tech, and it kills me. I took 4 months off last year due to stress (not sure if that can help with umemployment) and still can't believe i am still doing this job. I want to become an electrician, something i am interested in and is in demand.

What do you mean your current job doesn't allow you to look for other employment? They have no means of stopping you from doing it, and you are not under any obligation to disclose to your current employer that you are testing the market. Look for work online and in the paper, send out your resume and wait until you receive serious interest from a potential employer.

If you want to be an electrician just find one that will take you on as an apprentice... There have been ads all over the TV about people taking up trades... they probably have info on this sort of thing.
You could also take a course at Communtiy College... if anything you will learn a skill and make some connections.

Well, the hardest part is my current employer will not give me time off without weeks in advance notice. So if i want a day off, i have to tell them, 2-3 weeks in advance, and have a manager approve it. not exactly fun to set up an interview, i work 9-6pm, and look after the kid when i am not at work. i cannot receive personal calls, or use email personally...etc. I have a timed lunch, unpaid 45 minutes. i have to be at my work station exactly at the end of my lunch. if I am 1 minute late or 30 seconds late from logging in, then i am punished for that.....not exactly any flexiblity to contact any potential employeers.

There are government programs that will even pay for the schooling, but you have to be either on UI or unemployeed to qualify. I found several I am interested in and will be seeking this type of training once i am free from my current job.

I work for a big faceless company btw. They decided today that they will let me work part time but have yet to tell me what the hours/days would be if i go part time. I should find out soon and then make a decision what I am going to do, stay or quit. My wife supports whatever I choose, but I want to stay home with my little girl for a bit before she hits school age, weighing that against the hope to find a apprenticeship if possible to become an electrican at the same time. either way, somethings going to give before the dam breaks!
