Molson, Coors merger rumoured

Talks of a merger between Canadian brewing giant Molson Inc. and American counterpart Adolph Coors Co. are heating up, according to a report Monday in the Wall Street Journal.
The talks are at a sensitive stage and could fall apart, sources familiar with the situation told the financial newspaper.

The two beer companies, which are of similar size, already have deals in place to distribute each other's products in their respective markets.

But the Wall Street Journal reported there are several hurdles in front of a deal, including a feud among Molson family members.

Coors representatives didn't return calls from the WSJ.

A Molson spokeswoman declined to comment on any specific talks, but told the newspaper that the two already work together and that "we do have conversations and we do have discussions with them. We are always assessing our strategic alternatives in an industry that's faced with consolidation."

Stock in the Montreal-based Molson (TSX:MOL) was up 49 cents, or 1.5 per cent, at $33.09 in early trading Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Can't wait for the new ad campaign.... "I AM sorta Canadian"

It means nothing really. Interbrew owns Labatts - does your 50 or Blue taste any different? Of course not.

I personally drink Keith's but I could care less if it is owned by a wee Scotsman in Nova Scotia or a Japanese conglomerate.

I drink Unibrew's tasty beverages and rotate in whatever import or microbrew piques my curiosity...

Currently my fridge is stocked with:

12 Maudit
12 Touborg
12 Red Cap (stubbies... yay!)

All icy cold and waiting for me to consume...

I haven't made a practice of drinking Molson or Labbat's (except for their licensed brews like Corona) in an age... unless my Father in law offers me a beer... then there is a good chance I'll be drinking Blue or Canadian...

I realize that it actually means nothing in regards to the taste of thier low quality brews.

I just find it ironic that Molson, while running their "we're better than you" ad campaign which was actually made by an american ad company, might become a little less "Canadian", at least in ownership.

Psycho

the two companies are already in a sense merged.....
Coors light is sold here in Canada, and is brewed by molson, not coors.
It does actually taste different in the two countries.
My mom preferes the US made on though.

I heard on the news that each company will keep its identity in its market, but even with the merger, its still at risk of being bought out by Miller or Heineken.
