Talks of a merger between Canadian brewing giant Molson Inc. and American counterpart Adolph Coors Co. are heating up, according to a report Monday in the Wall Street Journal.
The talks are at a sensitive stage and could fall apart, sources familiar with the situation told the financial newspaper.
The two beer companies, which are of similar size, already have deals in place to distribute each other's products in their respective markets.
But the Wall Street Journal reported there are several hurdles in front of a deal, including a feud among Molson family members.
Coors representatives didn't return calls from the WSJ.
A Molson spokeswoman declined to comment on any specific talks, but told the newspaper that the two already work together and that "we do have conversations and we do have discussions with them. We are always assessing our strategic alternatives in an industry that's faced with consolidation."
Stock in the Montreal-based Molson (TSX:MOL) was up 49 cents, or 1.5 per cent, at $33.09 in early trading Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
