Looks like most of the obvious ones have been mentioned (Chisel, AC/DC, H&C etc.), although I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Crowded House yet. And if TISM gets on the list, surely DAAS do to?
For a bit of newer stuff: I've been going to End of Fashion gigs for years, and they've just started turning up on Rage and mainstream radio.

I think youll find that Crowded House are kiwis, well most of them anyway. Top group though. I remember when paul McArtney got handed this major award somewhere for being the best songwriter of all times or something, he said that this belongs to a guy in NZ, meaning Neil Finn. |

What the hell is wrong with Jet? Are they the new band that it's cool to hate?

How could i be so stupid. My first love of Australian music came via a little band im unembarresed to reveal as 1927. I was 7 when 'Ish' came out. And yes, i did get teased about it at school, but such are the sacrifices we make.

1927, they were huge! Nothing wrong with that... the late 80's were hard on all of us.

Indubitably AC/DC is the best Aussie act EVER !!!! but there are plently of other good bands as already listed such as TISM, John Butler Trio, Powderfinger, Angels, Chisel (sorry guys Barnsey doesn't count alone, just a bloke singing other guys songs Chisel carried him)
Not sure that the doug anthony all stars count as an offical band tho Paul Mac is surely one of the most talented performers around, and around, and around, now dip . . . (slight pun on his latest foray mc'ing ballroom dancing on the Teev) how the mighty have fallen . . SnOoP

Paul Mac is a hack. Paul McDermott, on the other hand, is a champion
Not such a fan of JBT...I had a beer with John once, and he was a bit of a tosser. And I maintain that Barnesy must be a great musician: if he can have a voice that bad and still record music that sounds so freakin' great, he must be doing something right But he's not nearly as good when he doesn't have Mossy behind him.

I didn't mean that I dislike their music because he's a tosser...those two statements are unrelated. I don't like their music much (personal preference), and I don't much like John either. Bloody Pinjarra hippies...

I remember seeing INXS at 'Rockalonga' in 1993... fucking great concert, Hutcho broke his ankle jumping off an amp, finished the set off sitting down, classic. Baby Animals and Chocolate Starfish were there too...

God, well I must have been living under a rock, 'cos I don't believe I have heard any of their tunes. If I have, I can't place it. Can you recommend a Butterfly Effect tune to seek out?

Bodyjar are from Kew (well, two from four are) and are one of the best live bands we've ever had. I watched them open for Pennywise in '96 at the Corner Hotel in Richmond and blew me away. People in the US have so much respect for BJ, they are the real deal.

I used to be a roadie years ago, and reading down the list of bands is like reading my resume. Baby Animals, the Spy's, Guru's, 1927, Diesel, The Radiators, Tommy Emanuel, Richard Clapton etc etc. The memories are flooding back.

The Corner Hotel in Melbourne! What a low dive that place was! I wonder if it's still a shit hole or whether it's been yuppified or pulled down now? Anyway, I ramble on. I'll shut up now.

Good times, Stick. That's why I loved the film 'Almost Famous'...could relate to it more than I wanted to! I used to do a bit of music writing as well, and the old adage "don't make friends with the band" is totally true, 'cos if you wanted to rip apart their latest record, you could do so without feeling like a total prick!
The Corner...funnily enough I was there last December on a Melbourne trip seeing the original lineup of the Beasts of Bourbon...and it was pretty much as I remembered it, which was heartening! The gig was awesome, too (although my ears did ring for months afterwards). Of course, a month or so later bassist Brian Hooper fell off a balcony after a gig and is now practically a paraplegiac. He's still making music tho...his site is pretty cool, too.
