Best Aussie Bands?
I started this thread cause I noticed the butterfly effect avatar in this forum. ;)
Best current aussie bands? (Old timers like ac/dc and chisel discounted!) My faves: Cog The Butterfly Effect Junto Love Outside Andromeda John Butler Trio The Living End and My band! ;) |
The Butterfly Effect are fantastic, I saw them once or twice. I know I saw them at the Big Day Out this year in Melbourne but I have a strange feeling I've seen them another time. Weird :)
And I've always been a sucker for powderfinger, ever since their first album. Their new stuff is ok, predictable but nothing wrong with it. John Butler Trio is great great too. Tex Perkins and the Cruel Sea are incredible. My all-time favorite has gotta be Nick Cave though :) |
The Cat Empire

<------ :):):)
cog too. damn both of them put on top shows! and whatareya you lot? seriously.. its common knowledge that all homeboys are dickheads.. you dont have be a genius to know, that in a forum like this there's gonna be sex tonight for some, but not for all. remember, theres no shame when you've been caught wankin' cuz denial works for me!. and remember when reading these posts, a hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer, but i drink to get pissed. |
Yeah, tism are fanfuckingtastic too. :)
|
thats what i thought, cant have an best aussie band thread without tism being in there.
|
whitlams :)
|
here is some that come to mind
The Screaming Jets Midnight Oil The Whitlams The Waifs TISM The Go-Betweens Something for kate |
after.. *shudder* hearing a dissociatives (sp?) track just before, it reminded me of silverchair.
not the 'laalaalaalalaaa' that is diorama, but frogstomp & freakshow. both quality cds. |
Can't go past Jebadiah (fuck I'm old).
And seeing as though this is an ANZAC forum I'll say that Shihad (Pacifier) are the best band I've seen live by a landslide. They played before You Am I when I seen then, absolutely stole the show. |

Midnight Oil
The Radiators Cold Chisel Ghostwriters - Hirst from Midnight Oils new band ...and not too bad either try " Runnaway Bay" Cheers |
Ah I forgot to mention the dirty three!
Another band I heard the other day and liked was forte. |

Old indeed. Anyone old enough to remember "Narara"? Divinyls,Chisel & Men at Work. Aah those were the days. Midnight Oil and Hunters though were the best for mine on a live scale. |

Weeelll......as a thirtysomething music addict, my list really would be endless (and quite possibly pretty obscure)....but here's a bunch for starters....
The John Butler Trio (saw them live the other week - shit they rawked) George Powderfinger Cruel Sea Beasts of Bourbon Any group with Tex Perkins Tex Perkins Dan Brodie Nick Cave / Bad Seeds Spiderbait Go Betweens Paul Kelly Ed Kuepper Old school stuff....Oils (saw them what seems like 1000's of times as a teenager), Hunnas...used to see TISM a lot back in my late 80's Melbourne days. Gave Frente one of their first gigs. Can't say I'm really up with new music now - never have time for JJJ and am really quite slack in that department. But I'm willing to listen to recommendations! |
tism
sonic animation xavier rudd nick cave / bad seeds john buttler trio the whitlams obligatory: powerfinger cold chisel jimmy barnes men at work For those who don't know, tism's new album (2 dvds - 1 cd) comes out in a couple weeks (June 20-somethingth). |
Why are the Chisels/Barnesy obligatory? Without Don Walker, that band would have been nothing.
|
It's obligatory that you have to like them. I believe it's an unspoken Australian rule that you have to know all the words to "Working Class Man" and "Khe Sahn".. at the very least (this is from the perspective of a (former) Yank, remember :) )
|
Oh, right. Well, Latch, I am an 80's gal and really can't stand the band - Don Walker was the only talented one out of the whole bunch in terms of songwriting ability, and Barnesy...well, methinks I'll leave that topic alone!
It was around 1984 when I stopped listening to commercial music and discovered 3RRR (and later PBS, where I did a show for many years), and a bunch of bands that, although not as famous as the Chisels, have produced some incredible music. Damn these infernal stereotypes!! |
Damn near forgot ---- The Angels
Cheers |
the living end
jet crowded house |
jet... iiiick! fucken horrible mob they are. i'd rather listen to nikki webster.

Jet suck BIG TIME!! Everything about them is contrived and manufactured. If you want a good, raw Aussie rock and roll outfit, listen so some You Am I. They should be where Jet is now.
I read in a Rolling Stone article that the guitarist from US band, The Strokes, said Jet made him want to stop playing music. He hated them so much. Ouch. |

I think we forgot Grinspoon, who are pretty ok in my opinion. In terms of aussie music though i dont think it gets much better than the oils. They had a consistent good sound, were awesome live and had a shit load of integrity.
I remember hearing a story about when they were auditioning for lead singers. Peter garret just turns up, and starts going crazy around the place. They concluded that he didnt have anywhere near the best voice out of the guys auditioning, but had the most energy and the baldest head. |
Yeah, but would you vote for him?

Something that is needed at the moment. He may very well, however, be thwarted by the party machine. I hope not. |
He's probably the only chance Labour have of winning an election in the next 10 years... thank fuck.
|
Maybe he needs his own thread?
|
You Aussies owe us a major apology for Jet.
|
Sorry.
Jet truly suck. |

[/flame]. Sorry.. had to say it to rile up the conversation (and probably take it all off offtopic again). |
Well, can someone apologise for Nickelback? Please?

Thank you. Yes, I'll reciprocate by offering an apology on behalf of America for Nickelback and all the other bands that sound exactly like them.
