Best Aussie Bands?
I started this thread cause I noticed the butterfly effect avatar in this forum. ;)
Best current aussie bands? (Old timers like ac/dc and chisel discounted!) My faves: Cog The Butterfly Effect Junto Love Outside Andromeda John Butler Trio The Living End and My band! ;) |
The Butterfly Effect are fantastic, I saw them once or twice. I know I saw them at the Big Day Out this year in Melbourne but I have a strange feeling I've seen them another time. Weird :)
And I've always been a sucker for powderfinger, ever since their first album. Their new stuff is ok, predictable but nothing wrong with it. John Butler Trio is great great too. Tex Perkins and the Cruel Sea are incredible. My all-time favorite has gotta be Nick Cave though :) |
The Cat Empire
|
<------ :):):)
cog too. damn both of them put on top shows! and whatareya you lot? seriously.. its common knowledge that all homeboys are dickheads.. you dont have be a genius to know, that in a forum like this there's gonna be sex tonight for some, but not for all. remember, theres no shame when you've been caught wankin' cuz denial works for me!. and remember when reading these posts, a hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer, but i drink to get pissed. |
Yeah, tism are fanfuckingtastic too. :)
|
thats what i thought, cant have an best aussie band thread without tism being in there.
|
whitlams :)
|
here is some that come to mind
The Screaming Jets Midnight Oil The Whitlams The Waifs TISM The Go-Betweens Something for kate |
after.. *shudder* hearing a dissociatives (sp?) track just before, it reminded me of silverchair.
not the 'laalaalaalalaaa' that is diorama, but frogstomp & freakshow. both quality cds. |
Can't go past Jebadiah (fuck I'm old).
And seeing as though this is an ANZAC forum I'll say that Shihad (Pacifier) are the best band I've seen live by a landslide. They played before You Am I when I seen then, absolutely stole the show. |

Midnight Oil
The Radiators Cold Chisel Ghostwriters - Hirst from Midnight Oils new band ...and not too bad either try " Runnaway Bay" Cheers |
Ah I forgot to mention the dirty three!
Another band I heard the other day and liked was forte. |
Quote:
Old indeed. Anyone old enough to remember "Narara"? Divinyls,Chisel & Men at Work. Aah those were the days. Midnight Oil and Hunters though were the best for mine on a live scale. |

Weeelll......as a thirtysomething music addict, my list really would be endless (and quite possibly pretty obscure)....but here's a bunch for starters....
The John Butler Trio (saw them live the other week - shit they rawked) George Powderfinger Cruel Sea Beasts of Bourbon Any group with Tex Perkins Tex Perkins Dan Brodie Nick Cave / Bad Seeds Spiderbait Go Betweens Paul Kelly Ed Kuepper Old school stuff....Oils (saw them what seems like 1000's of times as a teenager), Hunnas...used to see TISM a lot back in my late 80's Melbourne days. Gave Frente one of their first gigs. Can't say I'm really up with new music now - never have time for JJJ and am really quite slack in that department. But I'm willing to listen to recommendations! |
tism
sonic animation xavier rudd nick cave / bad seeds john buttler trio the whitlams obligatory: powerfinger cold chisel jimmy barnes men at work For those who don't know, tism's new album (2 dvds - 1 cd) comes out in a couple weeks (June 20-somethingth). |
Why are the Chisels/Barnesy obligatory? Without Don Walker, that band would have been nothing.
|
It's obligatory that you have to like them. I believe it's an unspoken Australian rule that you have to know all the words to "Working Class Man" and "Khe Sahn".. at the very least (this is from the perspective of a (former) Yank, remember :) )
|
Oh, right. Well, Latch, I am an 80's gal and really can't stand the band - Don Walker was the only talented one out of the whole bunch in terms of songwriting ability, and Barnesy...well, methinks I'll leave that topic alone!
It was around 1984 when I stopped listening to commercial music and discovered 3RRR (and later PBS, where I did a show for many years), and a bunch of bands that, although not as famous as the Chisels, have produced some incredible music. Damn these infernal stereotypes!! |
Damn near forgot ---- The Angels
Cheers |
the living end
jet crowded house |
jet... iiiick! fucken horrible mob they are. i'd rather listen to nikki webster.
bit of acca dacca goes alright too. |

Jet suck BIG TIME!! Everything about them is contrived and manufactured. If you want a good, raw Aussie rock and roll outfit, listen so some You Am I. They should be where Jet is now.
I read in a Rolling Stone article that the guitarist from US band, The Strokes, said Jet made him want to stop playing music. He hated them so much. Ouch. |

I think we forgot Grinspoon, who are pretty ok in my opinion. In terms of aussie music though i dont think it gets much better than the oils. They had a consistent good sound, were awesome live and had a shit load of integrity.
I remember hearing a story about when they were auditioning for lead singers. Peter garret just turns up, and starts going crazy around the place. They concluded that he didnt have anywhere near the best voice out of the guys auditioning, but had the most energy and the baldest head. |
Yeah, but would you vote for him?

Something that is needed at the moment. He may very well, however, be thwarted by the party machine. I hope not. |
He's probably the only chance Labour have of winning an election in the next 10 years... thank fuck.
|
Maybe he needs his own thread?
|
You Aussies owe us a major apology for Jet.
|
Sorry.
Jet truly suck. |
Quote:
[/flame]. Sorry.. had to say it to rile up the conversation (and probably take it all off offtopic again). |
Well, can someone apologise for Nickelback? Please?
|
Quote:

Thank you. Yes, I'll reciprocate by offering an apology on behalf of America for Nickelback and all the other bands that sound exactly like them.
|
Looks like most of the obvious ones have been mentioned (Chisel, AC/DC, H&C etc.), although I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Crowded House yet. And if TISM gets on the list, surely DAAS do to?
For a bit of newer stuff: I've been going to End of Fashion gigs for years, and they've just started turning up on Rage and mainstream radio. |

I think youll find that Crowded House are kiwis, well most of them anyway. Top group though. I remember when paul McArtney got handed this major award somewhere for being the best songwriter of all times or something, he said that this belongs to a guy in NZ, meaning Neil Finn. |
What the hell is wrong with Jet? Are they the new band that it's cool to hate?
|
If you were to listen to music beyond what's on TRL and top-40 radio, you'd notice that they just blatantly rip off music from 40 years ago. Then make it a lot more annoying.

The strokes and the vines are also unoriginal morons who need to be stopped.

The Best Aussie Band:
You Am I without a doubt!! |
Good call, GTO. Jet are where You Am I should be.

Haven't we annexed those bastards already?

Yeah...it's a bit like Taiwan...they're ours, they just refuse to admit it. Can't for the life of me imagine why not.

The Kiwis I know refer to Oz as the West Island.

Are you talking about E.A.?
|
How could i be so stupid. My first love of Australian music came via a little band im unembarresed to reveal as 1927. I was 7 when 'Ish' came out. And yes, i did get teased about it at school, but such are the sacrifices we make.
|
1927, they were huge! Nothing wrong with that... the late 80's were hard on all of us.
|
Indubitably AC/DC is the best Aussie act EVER !!!! but there are plently of other good bands as already listed such as TISM, John Butler Trio, Powderfinger, Angels, Chisel (sorry guys Barnsey doesn't count alone, just a bloke singing other guys songs Chisel carried him)
Not sure that the doug anthony all stars count as an offical band tho Paul Mac is surely one of the most talented performers around, and around, and around, now dip . . . (slight pun on his latest foray mc'ing ballroom dancing on the Teev) how the mighty have fallen . . SnOoP |
Paul Mac is a hack. Paul McDermott, on the other hand, is a champion :)
Not such a fan of JBT...I had a beer with John once, and he was a bit of a tosser. And I maintain that Barnesy must be a great musician: if he can have a voice that bad and still record music that sounds so freakin' great, he must be doing something right :p But he's not nearly as good when he doesn't have Mossy behind him. |

I didn't mean that I dislike their music because he's a tosser...those two statements are unrelated. I don't like their music much (personal preference), and I don't much like John either. Bloody Pinjarra hippies...
|
I remember seeing INXS at 'Rockalonga' in 1993... fucking great concert, Hutcho broke his ankle jumping off an amp, finished the set off sitting down, classic. Baby Animals and Chocolate Starfish were there too...
|
The Butterfly Effect
Grinspoon 28 Days (On occasion. Some of their songs annoy the piss out of me.) Spiderbait Gotten into Butterfingers lately Eskimo Joe The Butterfly Effect Bodyjar (They are Australian, aren't they? Anyway, their version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" is Brilliant.) Living end The Butterfly Effect Did I mention The Butterfly Effect? |
yeah butterfly effect fkin own :)
|
God, well I must have been living under a rock, 'cos I don't believe I have heard any of their tunes. If I have, I can't place it. Can you recommend a Butterfly Effect tune to seek out?
|
Quote:
Bodyjar are from Kew (well, two from four are) and are one of the best live bands we've ever had. I watched them open for Pennywise in '96 at the Corner Hotel in Richmond and blew me away. People in the US have so much respect for BJ, they are the real deal. |

I like Jet as well. So they're unoriginal, so what? Still decent music. Silly Aussies :p |
Um yeah.. Nickleback is Canadian.. but no we wont apologize ;)
|
You know...
I don't mind Jet's newest song (here).. the soft one. It's not too bad. |
Damn, boy. Surely you jest???
|
Bumped for Ishmal... :-)
|
I'll throw in votes for the Baby Animals (awesome live - saw them at the Paddo RSL an eon ago), Spy vs Spy and the Hoodoo Gurus!
|
Hell yeah, Spindles! That Suze de Marchi was a FOX...she went and married that dude from Extreme and had a kidlet. But I bet she can still belt one out....what an awesome voice she had.
|
My picks
Something with numbers Spod Life Love regret (RIP... for now anyway) Stronger then Hate (RIP) The porkers Frenzal Rhomb Regurgitator |
I've got Suze De Marchi solo album released in 1999 called Telelove. It is bloody good too. If she was the president she'd be Baberaham Lincoln.
|
I used to be a roadie years ago, and reading down the list of bands is like reading my resume. Baby Animals, the Spy's, Guru's, 1927, Diesel, The Radiators, Tommy Emanuel, Richard Clapton etc etc. The memories are flooding back.
|
Hahaha...I used to be a groupie so it's a little similar here, Stick mate!
|

The Corner Hotel in Melbourne! What a low dive that place was! I wonder if it's still a shit hole or whether it's been yuppified or pulled down now? Anyway, I ramble on. I'll shut up now. |
Good times, Stick. That's why I loved the film 'Almost Famous'...could relate to it more than I wanted to! I used to do a bit of music writing as well, and the old adage "don't make friends with the band" is totally true, 'cos if you wanted to rip apart their latest record, you could do so without feeling like a total prick!
The Corner...funnily enough I was there last December on a Melbourne trip seeing the original lineup of the Beasts of Bourbon...and it was pretty much as I remembered it, which was heartening! The gig was awesome, too (although my ears did ring for months afterwards). Of course, a month or so later bassist Brian Hooper fell off a balcony after a gig and is now practically a paraplegiac. He's still making music tho...his site is pretty cool, too. |
