Is this island near the coast of China?

Tul, I'm no expert in kimpewter stuff either, but a little "logic" goes a long way. And since I hate Windows and always liked D.O.S. and considered myself adept at it back in the day, it tickled me that I actually resorted to calling up a "c:\" command prompt and was manually searching directories and files and deciding what to kill from there.

I guess that depends on your definition of near. But I would say yes, it is near the coast of China.

No and no.

Here's a photo and a clue-

Head north and you'll find this town. Look to recent headlines and find it's name.

No the town I'm looking for is much smaller. Yokohama is a suburb of Tokyo with probably several million residents.

Open up your morning paper, look at the front page and see who's name is on it more times then anyone else's and you'll likely come up with _______, Japan.

That's where I'm at.

Fukui youi Tuli...I think you might be in Obama, Fukui, Japan? Obama, Fukui - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...and further:

Relationship with elected U.S. President, Barack Obama
After the city of Obama noted the rise of Barack Obama as an American politician (Democratic Party) and as the elected President of the United States, they decided to use the common name to boost publicity for the town.

It began when the Illinois Senator gave a 2006 interview to Japanese television network TBS where he noted that, when passing through customs in Narita Airport, an official looking at his visa noted that he was from Obama. The Obama City Hall heard about the interview and the then mayor, Toshio Murakami, sent Senator Obama a set of the city’s famous lacquer chopsticks, a DVD about the city and a letter wishing him the best. As Senator Obama's presidential campaign progressed, more local businesses began to organize primary parties and put up "Go Obama!" posters, sell "I love Obama" T-shirts, and produce manjū (a type of Japanese confectionery) with Senator Obama's face on them.

Senator Obama has since thanked the town for their gifts and support, saying "I look forward to a future marked by the continued friendship of our two great nations and a shared commitment to a better, freer world".

There are a number of Japanese with the surname Obama though the American Senator is of Kenyan Luo heritage; it is not uncommon for Japanese and East African names to sound alike.

Statue of Barack Obama after victory in 2008 US election
As a result of the decisive victory by Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, the Mayor of Obama City announced to the Japanese press that he intends to commission a statue of Barack Obama to be put in front of the city hall "as a token of the great historical moment for the name Obama".

In addition, he has declared that November 4th will be an annual holiday in the city.

North Korean abductions of Japanese
Obama is one of the locations where Japanese citizens were abducted by agents of the North Korean government on July 7, 1978. Some Americans were hoping for a Sarah Palin abduction when a special ops N. Korean little league baseball team was found washed up on the shores of Alaska.

no, I don't watch TV...though I did spend an hour or so yesterday setting up our family's new widescreen, and I should have spent a night at Holiday Inn Express, I bet I'd know this if I did. I'll go think on it some more.
