V.J.'s Exotic Safaris - The Great South Pacific Express

An Introduction
The Great South Pacific Express, Australia's own Orient-Express is the first ever train to travel the distance from Sydney to Cairns. This luxurious travelling hotel combines the highest standards of Australian engineering with opulence and comfort and the train pays tribute to Australia's early railway heritage. Walls are in solid red cedarwood and myrtle and roof panels are fitted with intricate stained glass. The train offers a unique vantage point from which to enjoy the Australian scenery and experience the World Heritage sites of the Kuranda Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef and majestic Blue Mountains, the famous vineyards of the Hunter Valley and the nation's capital, Canberra.

Wining and Dining
Dining on board the Great South Pacific Express is an experience in itself. An ever-changing menu of gourmet dishes are prepared on board by our team of chefs and accompanied by excellent wines served in the finest crystal. Menus reflect modern Australian cuisine while the service equals that found in the world's finest restaurants.

Lunch and dinner is served in one of the two beautifully decorated Dining Cars, built to reflect 19th century grandeur. Table d'hote meals are included in the fare, while an A la carte menu and 24-hour compartment service is available additionally.

Each day, breakfast and afternoon tea will be delivered to you in your compartment. For those passengers wishing to rise early to take advantage of the beautiful scenery, tea and coffee will be served for you in the Observation Car from 6.30am.

The Maitre D' will come to your cabin to take your lunch and dinner reservations.

On board the Great South Pacific Express your air-conditioned compartment is furnished with meticulous attention to detail and complete with crisp linen and soft towels. A steward is on hand 24 hours a day. There are three types of accommodation on board the Great South Pacific Express: Commissioners Suite, State Compartments and Pullman Compartments. Each compartment has an en-suite shower and WC, wardrobe, hairdryer, bathrobes, ottoman and safe. Sockets are only suitable for Australian standard plugs, an adaptor is required for all other plugs.

From Wikipedia
The Great South Pacific Express was a luxury train service, run in a joint venture by Queensland Rail and the Venice Simplon Orient Express, that ran between Kuranda (near Cairns) and Sydney in Australia from 1998 until 2003. The train accommodated 100 passengers in up to 21 carriages, at a cost from approximately $3500 to $5500 depending on type of accommodation. The train also made occasional excursions to Canberra, the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley.

The service ended in June 2003 when losses of around $12 million over four years forced QR to stop the service. The carriages themselves were owned and built by Queensland Rail at a cost of $35 million, and after the demise of the service were sold to Orient-Express Hotels for an undisclosed price in 2005, for use on their trains overseas.

Wow, sounds like one nice trip. I thought the 3500 to 5000 price was a misprint at first. Sounds like that's in AD not USD too. Could be why they went tits up.

OK, go! Where am I now?

No, didn't think of that or I might have been. Thanksgiving isn't a big happening down here. Nor is it likely where I'm at in the game.

You and I are reading the same ads. Actually have a friend of a friend who knows the people running that shop. I'm doing some dive master work for her in Cancun over Christmas. If offered I may take that job, though I really think they want someone with a lot more exp.

Yep, Yap is where I'm at.

If I get the position I hope they pay me in dollars-

Quote:
Yap is notable for its stone money, known as Rai: large doughnut-shaped, carved disks of (usually) calcite, up to 4 m (12 ft) in diameter (most are much smaller). The smallest known one is only 7 centimetres (2.8 in) in diameter. There are five major types of monies: Mmbul, Gaw, Fe' or Rai, Yar, and Reng, this last being only 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter. Many of them were brought from other islands, as far as New Guinea, but most came in ancient times from Palau. Their value is based on both the stone's size and its history. Historically the Yapese valued the disks because the material looks like quartz, and these were the shiniest objects around. Eventually the stones became legal tender and were even mandatory in some payments[3]. The stones' value was kept high due to the difficulty and hazards involved in obtaining them. To quarry the stones, Yapese adventurers had to sail to distant islands and deal with local inhabitants that were sometimes hostile. Once quarried, the disks had to be transported back to Yap via rafts towed behind wind-powered canoes. The scarcity of the disks, and the effort and peril required to obtain them, made them valuable to the Yapese. However, in 1874, an enterprising Irishman named David O'Keefe hit upon the idea of employing the Yapese to import more "money" in the form of shiploads of large stones, also from Palau. O'Keefe then traded these stones with the Yapese for other commodities such as sea cucumbers and copra. Although some of the O'Keefe stones are larger than the canoe-transported stones, they are less valuable than the earlier stones due to the comparative ease in which they were obtained. Approximately 6,800 of them are scattered around the island.

Yer up Nick!

I'd think I'd take the Rai, only because it sounds like you can buy property with it. Still struck by how quickly you found me. I thought I picked a rather obscure island, one I never heard of until recently.

BTW- where did you find that ad?

Back to the regularly scheduled game-

Tul,
after I wild guessed Guam and you said I was getting warm, I went on google maps and looked around in the Pacific on the west side of Guam. I saw a couple very small white dots that were not even labeled, so when I zoomed in on one of those it said "Colonia". Since I never heard of Colonia, I googled it and found a couple links that I read and that convinced me to throw the guess out there.
One of the links was this one: Federated States of Micronesia Colonia Dive Base Leader Job and employment (SOUTHPACIFICEMPLOYMENT.COM ...which made me fantasize that I could instruct and manage a diving operation, jump on the next plane and send a letter to my family from Colonia and see if they're clever enough to find me. I would give my family free diving lessons and dive trips.
