six flags kingda ka?
|
Not 6 Flags. Think "interesting building", not on the beach, a few miles inland. After you nailed NJ, I did sneak in sort of a clue in one of my previous posts.
|
Cathedral of the Air?
|
Not knowing what it is, I looked that up, Tul. I'm not there. But the "air" part had me thinking twice since that could be an appropriate name for where I am.
|
NAES Lakehurst?
|
Tul man, you are so close I can smell you....but I asked for a building. So hit me up with a quite significant building at that location and you got me.
|
Hangar #1? The building in the background of the famous Hindenburg disaster, I think it's still there.
|
You found me. I'm in Hangar 1. You're up next, Tul.
And yes, it is still there. I worked at Toms River Chemical for a project a couple years ago (still glowing in the dark from that) and I used to pass the base and look over at this humungous interesting building every day...I knew what it was but I'd love to take a tour and go inside. I should find out if that's possible. The largest building in this pic is Hangar 1...the blimp flag marks the spot where der Hindenberg ging in Flammen auf http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ter_Marker.jpg You will probably notice the swastikas on the Hindenberg in this shot of it sticking out of Hangar 1 on one of it's trans-Atlantic trips before the manatee incident http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...Hangar1_36.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...rom_hangar.jpg And a shot of the tragic end of the big airship: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...hindenberg.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...02bcdea730.jpg and just for good measure, a complementary cool pic I found while searching for Hangar 1 pics: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...-5961C-011.jpg |
Really? You used to work at a place with a view of blimp hangers? Here's the view out the front door of the first real job I had after being discharged from the US Navy-
http://members.tripod.com/airfields_...eb_hangars.jpg The hanger in the front is hanger B. Hanger A, in the back ground, burned to the ground in '92. I was working a youth correctional facility. We used to walk the kids around the old air base and use the old rec. equipment. The old base even has it's own bowling alley complete with manually pin setting rigs. We used to tell the kids if they could throw a baseball over the roof we'd give them their parole paper papers. None ever managed to come close. Small world. OK where am I? |
NH?
I love those huge airplane hangars....and I need to see about getting a ride in a blimp. Maybe next time I'll buy Goodyear tires or something. About manual pin setting at a bowling alley, when I was a kid our parish church parochial school built a new extension on the school and in the basement they built in four bowling alleys but with manual pin setups. So as kids we'd go down there when the old guys were bowling and they'd pay us huge bucks for setting their pins, which back then was $0.10 a game and maybe a tip if the guy bowling won some money. I used to get tipped extra well by a couple of bowler gamblers when I "helped" their game: I would be sitting up behind the pin rack with a bowling pin in hand, and just as his ball hit the first pin, I would throw the extra pin down at the back few pins as hard as I could and knock down a bunch more just in case...never got caught but I did confess this "sin" to Father ?...forgot his name, but he couldn't understand one word of English (only Polish) so we'd have no hesitation telling him all sorts of evil sins we committed since all he would say is "good boy, five our father five hail mary" and we'd be saved! |
NH, yes.
That's funny my dad worked his way through school setting pins. I'd guess knowing my dad there were no "extra" pins when he set them. Those blimp hanger I posted are in Tillamook, Oregon. There for a while a company made blimps in them in the late 80's. Last one I saw fly out was a Metlife blimp. A guy I worked with kid was working there, I never could bum a ride. They made it sound like I had a better chance of getting lift on the space shuttle. Maybe I should send NASA a letter- Nah, e-mail they seem like they could be techie types.. |
WH?
I have some hook-ups in Houston, I'll see what I can do. Besides NASA Johnson, my buddy in Houston is ex-AirForce...actually seems like he's never quite "ex" and he and a couple of his buddies are always flying around...I need to fly, at least in a small plane, preferrably fast. |

Best of luck, that's a hard nut to crack. I tried for years to get a ride along with a National Guard unit. Used have lunch with the commander about twice a month for nearly 15 years. |

Not looking for a city, looking for a specific location though. In fact I'm very near a city but I don't think I'm within the city limit. I'll check.
Yep, near a city but about 5m. out of town according to the internets. |
