the TFP communal chess game
I propose we play a communal game of chess.
Here's how I see it working. I'll start the game with white's first move. Each subsequent participant makes the next move, alternating between white and black accordingly. There is no limit to the number of moves a given participant can make, except that each player must wait a minimum of two moves before making another move. For example, if I start the game, I cannot make black's first move nor white's next move. This way the game cannot be dominated by a relatively few number of participants; therefore more people can, and hopefully, will get involved. All moves should be expressed in standard algebraic notation (see pic below for details): i.e. for the King's pawn moving forward two squares, you'd say e2- e4. You may, of course also express the move in words as well, but NO MOVE WILL BE VALID without the algebraic notation. It would also be helpful to announce which side you are making the move for, to help eliminate potential confusion. I'll try to come up with a way to post a picture of the board every so often. If anyone has or knows of an easy way to do this, feel free to PM me with the details or just go ahead and do it yourself. What would be really good would be a simple flash script that could be embedded in the thread and updated by anyone making a move, but this is way beyond my ability to perform. The game will continue until one side or the other accomplishes checkmate, stalemate or draw. Also, I suggest that all standard rules of chess apply, including capturing en passant and castling. edit: just in case anyone thinks it'd be cool/funny to play stupid moves (not that I think anyone would do that, but just in case) please don't. also, please make your own moves...i.e. don't use a computer program to decide the next move. Ready? Game on! white: king's pawn forward 2 e2-e4

think I figured it out...hope this works
ok, this seems to be working. Im using a very simple (and free) program called Chessit (available here: http://www.rosecitydownloads.com/chess.zip )to make the moves, then taking a screenshot and posting it in this thread ( http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=126194 ) and linking to it here. my goal is to update after every pair of moves (white, then black). but there will undoubtedly be times when I'm not able to due to work or something. you are all free to help out on this (and I'd certainly appreciate the help) to keep this going as smoothly as possible. just post your screenshots in the thread I created (in tilted artwork, called tfpchess) and link to it here.

squeeb, as I said above, please use the algebraic notation. "NO MOVE WILL BE VALID" unless expressed in the algebraic notation. your move should be expressed as g1-f3. the main reason for this is that not everyone knows or understands chess shorthand. also, this prevents any possible misunderstanding about which piece or pawn is moving, in the event that, to use this move as an example, there are two white knights which can legally move to the f3 square. I'm gonna let this move stand, but this will be the last reminder. henceforth, moves not expressed in the proper form are to be considered invalid and ignored. further note, when posting your moves, please be sure to double check that you have not made a typo. for example, if squeeb had posted h1-f3 by mistake, the move would have to be considered invalid, as the rook cannot legally make that move. squeeb's move: white g1-f3

I'm willing to bet that if it was possible to legally move either knight to f3 squeeb would have indicated which one he meant to be moved. Shorthand allows for that. Either way... g8-f6 or 2. ... g8-f6 or 2. g1-f3 g8-f6 Whichever you prefer. (I'm a fan of the shorthand.) 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 White to move.

sion, i'm sure you know this, but for those who may not... the older "descriptive chess notation" (N-QB3, which means knight to queen's bishop 3). was replaced by the modern "algebraic notation" (shorthand) (Nc3) which is more brief and less ambiguous. the way sion is doing the moves is an excellent middleground, where it is brief but still leaves no room for misunderstanding.
