question on Tequila tasting
in college I tasted tequila either with some 7up or some salt and lime, now I going to a tequila tasting party.
We are going to have: don Julio Cabo Wabo cazadores patron and I think some others. from what I know these are not necessarily shooting tequilas but more of a sipping tequila. any rules/etiquette on sipping tequila? do we eat crackers to cleanse the palate? Should I sneak in a lime and a salt shaker? Any thoughts |

this is sippin' takilla -- no limes no salt -- sipping takillas are more like an aged scotch... they have a lot of depth and character and each one has it's own uniqueness... This isn't Jose Cuervo you are drinking and you will probably not want to go back to drinking it
When I've hosted scotch tastings/tequilla tastings or wine tastings I will generally serve bread and water as a pallette cleanser (in the case of tequilla many some nice tortillas or a flat bread) Crackers would be fine but a little boring and the salt might interfere. Have fun and take notes if you remember and report back on your favorites and why. Somewhere on these forums we've had a discussion on tequillas -

I love tequila, but I don't know of types of tequila. As cj2112 said I would agree with mal because she is quite intelligent on her stuff.
I hate to threadjack, but this has to do with tequila. I was out tonight and someone said that shooting tequila and following it with tomato juice and cucumber is good. I have never heard this. Has anyone has ever tried this? I have always used lime and salt.

Tequilla with tomato juice and a cucumber swizzle is a bloody maria -- it's actually quite a tasty drink, but i've never heard of doing it as shooters....

Which of each brand are you trying? Most people I know are all about Patron, but personally I like Cabo Wabo Silver better than any of the dozens of other types I've tried. It's not the most expensive of even the Cabo Wabo line, but something about it hits me just right.

I went to a tequila tasting on a tour when I was in Mexico, but I honestly don't remember if we had something in between for the palatte cleansing. Mal is right, this will definitely turn you off of bad/mediocre tequilas, because the difference is so pronounced. Sounds like a fantastic party, let us know how it goes!!

In Mexico, the drink of choice with non top shelf sippling tequilia is Squirt, which is a grapefruit flavored soft drink.
Clear or silver tequila is 80 proof tequila right out of the vat. Reposada is slightly yellow and the tequila has mellowed in oak casks for several months. Top shelf tequila will typically be anejo or golden and will have aged in oak casks fro soem time. Typically, the casks are the used ones from the US from Kentucky or Tennessee distilleries. Good trivia. The beverage is actually mezcal, but it is mezcal from the environs around Tequila, Jalisco, therefore, mezcal de Tequila, or, Tequila. |

All, General notes:
Resposado Tequilas had a stronger flavor, and it seemed more difficult to get some of the subtleties (is that a word?) Resposado refers to the aging process, and Resposado normally ages in terms of days the Anejo Tequilas were much smoother, in particular the Corazon Tequila (a surprise Tequila) and the Don Julio, were big winners, the original smell was not as rough, and the flavors of the tequila was able to come through. Corazon seemed to have a bit of a spice to it probably made from the Canadian Oak barrels. As a normal wine taster, I used some techniques from wine tasting, the smelling of aroma was difficult since the smell is quite strong. however the very small tastes did help. We ended up clearing our palates with lime flavored tortilla chips, and a good time was had by all. |

A very rich friend of mine spends several months of the year in Mexico every year, and comes back with bottles of the good stuff.
He says in the very small town cantinas, when you order a shot of tequila, they bring an equal size shot glass full of tomatoe juice. Only the difference is that every cantina flavours thier own tomatoe juice, producing different and amazing aftertastes for each brand, in each place!! Imagine the dozens of different juice and liquor combinations... yummy. I have matured to the point that I sip my good stuff, and then clean the palate with some tomatoe juice. Have your friends make thier own tomatoe juice (with lime, salt, hot sauce added) before the tasting begins. What a unique and wonderful way to start the party!
