What's your favorite sweet onion?
I've always been partial to the Vidalia, but tried a Walla Walla last week and was impressed. Huge onion, sweet and mild. Any others I should try?

There's a sweet onion from Hawaii called the Maui something. Very similar to the Vidalia and Walla Walla.
I'm on the west coast, and Walla Wallas are more common here than Vidalia. But I've had both, and I'd say that the Walla Walla is at least the equal of the Vidalia. It's been too long since I had a Vidalia, though, to say any more. |

One of the problems I've found with Vidalias is that they became so popular it's hard to find "real" Vidalias, too many knock-offs.

Here in Georgia I have never seen any competitors to the Vidalia for sale. I did enjoy the Maui onion when elsewhere. Never had a WallaWalla, but I am more than willing to try one.

There's something called the Texas 1014 that was engineered at Texas A&M to be a sweet onion. It's better than the Vidalias I've had, but they may not have been "real" (Didn't know there were fakes) You can eat them like an apple, if you wanted to.

I also forgot to mention.... I buy lot's of Vidalias when they are in season, cut them up and freeze them. If you double bag and get the air out, they last for six months or more. Then, you can always grab a handful. Also, it's good to do the same thing with red and yellow bell peppers. Just get them when the prices are rock bottom, chop and freeze away.

Pretty good page talks all about sweet onions and where they came from, and where they're grown. I always thought that the soil in a particular area made the difference, and apparently low-sulfur soil makes a big difference, but apparently it's the breed as much as anything....
