Food combinations
Recently, I came across a list of unusual food combinations (things you normally wouldn't think of combining together), and Grancey and I noticed that we already ate a lot of the combinations on the list and considered them "normal." So, we've been wanting to try the other combinations on the list.
These are the things that are supposed to be unusual combinations, but we already eat them that way: Carrots and sugar - you cook them down until the carrots are glazed Coffee and salt - every Southerner knows to add a pinch of salt to the coffee grinds before they're brewed. Chocolate and coffee - well, duh. Chocolate and chili - another Southern thing, I guess. Every time I make a pot of chili, I break up a Hershey's bar and toss it in. Strawberries and pepper - the pepper intensifies the strawberry flavor, but you can't taste the pepper. These are the unusual food combinations that we want to try, but haven't gotten around to it yet: Tomatoes and sugar - raw, sliced tomatoes with some sprinkled sugar (not salt). Meat and aniseed - supposedly one of the secrets of all the meat dishes at The Fat Duck. Tomatoes with the branch - when cooking tomatoes, toss in one of the branches to enhance the flavor Potatoes and nutmeg - any potato dish Apples and vanilla - like the strawberries and pepper, the vanilla intensifies the apple flavor while you can't taste the vanilla. I wonder if anybody else has any interesting food combinations?

None of these combinations seem all that odd. To me an odd combination is more like:
Peanut butter and bologna. Chocolate Cake with Mac 'n' Cheese Not that I want to try these things. I just say them to make a point.

I don't think the point was to throw together things that shouldn't be thrown together. I viewed the idea as things that you normally wouldn't think of blending together, but are actually fantastic when you try it.
I also used to sprinkle salt on my watermelon when I was a kid, but I haven't tried it that way since.

I was making a baked brie and had forgotten to get something for the topping (usually use dried cherries/currants/raisins) I already had something sweet for it (fig jelly) and the only thing I had in the kitchen that even seemed like a good idea were salted pistachios. AWESOME! So, brie cheese, fig jelly & pistachios.

Peanut butter and a Banana. It's not two objects that make any sense together and yet for some reason it makes for a delicious sandwich.
Toast with butter AND jam. I always thought of toast as sorta like binary. Either you had jam or butter but not both. Again unexpected and delicious. Pepper and brownies. This one's more of a spicing thing but who would actually consider putting some white pepper or chili powder in their brownies? It works. I don't know why but it works.

I can't eat cream cheese anymore, but I used to love cream cheese and pepperoni on a whole wheat sub roll in high school. And cream cheese and jam sandwiches. But only raspberry or strawberry jam.
Guinness and chocolate. Guinness and chocolate and chili. saltine and brummel & brown mini sammiches. dried cranberries and blue cheese. pretzel sticks, yellow mustard and ham slices. pretzels, strawberry and cream cheese pie. apples and drunken goat cheese. string cheese dipped in yellow mustard. HP sauce and mashed potatoes. I have a lot of odd combinations. But then again, I'll eat just pickles for lunch. ![]()

I've yet to try chocolate covered bacon, but I must. I definitely must try this.
Is there any other combination as unlikely as this? ![]() I did have a salmon club sandwich recently that was outstanding. Who ever though of pairing salmon with bacon is a genius. Nice dill mayonnaise on it. Wonderful. What won't pair with bacon? |

Oh. Mah. Lawd. I forgot about this delicacy since I gave up both chocolate and french fries after becoming lactose intolerant. I dream of Frosties and Fries....
