Good inexpensive coffee suggestions
Ok, so I am looking for a good brand of coffee, but I don't want to spend too much.
I really enjoy trying new coffee's but as much as I drink, I am by no means an expert and have no desire to buy the real expensive stuff. At my work, we always have Pete's brand and at home, I have a huge thing of Starbucks (which I am totally sick of now). I did find a good fair trade brand called Pura Vida. My church serves that and its pretty decent. I won't put a link, since I believe that is frowned upon. Anyone got some good suggestions? I only drink it black by the way, it that alters your suggestion.

Look around your town; chances are at least one of the small, independent coffeeshops you know of sells beans or ground coffee. That's how I usually get my coffee, and the price is usually very reasonable, since it's a local, bulk product. Furthermore, at some places I get more choice than I would get at a grocery store, and more ability to choose where my coffee comes from and what kind of roast it has.
If you're drinking Starbucks and Peet's already you're not going to be satisfied by Folger's or another big can brand, so really inexpensive coffee is probably out of the question.

Have you tried EVERY flavour of Starbucks coffee? Each has it's own subtle taste- I really like the Latin American coffees from Starbucks like "Casi Cielo" or "Fincas de Chiapas." Both of those are limited edition, but if you have the chance, try also the Christmas Blend.
OH, and if you're in the bay area, check out some Ethiopian restaurants in the area- they have amazing coffee service. And I agree with onesnowyowl. |

Check Trader Joes - I am a HUGE pan of Peets - picked it up when i was in seattle and I have it shipped to New York.
Trader joe's has a kind called "Double Dark" , "Volcano" and "Sumatra", 3 very good choices if you like darker roast coffee. The darker the better for me, and black only. For 12 ounces, it was $4.99 for the sealed canister of beans.

I'm not sure if it's available in your area, but there's a coffee called Community Coffee that comes from Louisiana that is a superb inexpensive coffee. When I left Florida to live in Louisiana they didn't sell it here, but when I came back two years later I started finding it on some grocery store shelves. Of course, it's a little more expensive here because here it's considered a "gourmet" coffee, but over there it's only slightly more expensive than Folger's and I wouldn't hesitate to say that 7 out of 10 coffee drinkers in Louisiana drink it as their home coffee. At least where I was living it seemed that way. It comes in a bright red package and they have a good variety of roasts. I usually buy one medium for everyday coffee and dark roast for special coffee times. It truly is an excellent coffee...
and I think we can post links can't we? http://www.communitycoffee.com/ccc/

There's one can that even the biggest coffee snobs should like. . . but it can be hard to find outside of the south unless you make friends with your grocer and beg him to order it. Try French Market. |

I'm not trying to be a walking infomercial here, but I have to throw in my two cents about the Braun Tassimo coffeemaker. WOW!!!!
One of my colleagues at work put one in his department's breakroom and made me a cappucino with it. I went home and told Grancey how fabulous it was and she bought one for me that day. It's a little expensive ($170 at Bed Bath and Beyond) but the coffee it makes is unbelievable. The coffee comes packaged in single serving "T-Disks" and the coffeemaker reads the barcode on each T-Disk. It heats the exact amount of water to the exact temperature for each different kind of coffee that goes with it. There are Gevalia lattes, cappucinos, cremas, regular American blends, European blends, hot chocolate, and even Earl Grey. After the cost of the machine, the T-Disks come in packages of 8 or 16 and cost about $8 per pack ($1 per cup of coffee). I promised Grancey that if we got one I'd never buy another Starbucks and we would save tons of money in the long run. She told me last weekend that since I drink a helluva lot more of these things than I used to of Starbucks then I'm losing money. She's probably right, because it makes a pretty fucking good cup of coffee. EDIT: Target now sells them with Maxwell House brand disks instead of Gevalia at about half price.

Try to find Luzianne white label coffee and chicory- not at all what you would think. Just don't buy dark roast or it will be what you think. The dark roast gives it the burnt taste- not the chicory. (the chicory is only a natural preservative and yields only a slight taste difference)
Café Du Monde Coffee & Chicory is about as good as it gets. Not expensive and has a great taste. If you can find a Standard Coffee Service service rep- ask for a case of B blend. Probably the BEST everyday morning coffee you will ever buy. Don't think you will find this one on line. |
