Saw (1&2)

Only approximately 20 days until the new Saw Movie comes out...

Are you going to see it? Have you seen the first one? What did you think of it?

Well, to start it off, yup, I've seen Saw. Directed by Australia. /very proud. In case people didn't know it's about...

Quote:
Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) wake up chained to pipes at opposite ends of a dirty utility room. They soon learn that they have become the victims of the Jigsaw, a serial killer who devises intricate situations to get his victims to kill each other. Pitted against the clock and each other, the two must work to outwit their captor and save Gordon's family, who have been taken hostage by the killer.
And the sequel (trailer linky here ) coming out is...

Quote:
Jigsaw locks a few unlucky people in a booby-trapped shelter; they must find a way out before they inhale too much of a lethal nerve gas and die. But they must watch out, for the traps Jigsaw has set in the shelter lead to death also
Also, what was not told in that quote from IMBD.com is that (I've been told) that Jigsaw is captured at the start of the movie, but the new detective must still try and stop it, and undoubtably his presence will have been pre-emptively noticed by the pyschopath.

Looks like an absolute ripper

Ripper? As in, good or bad?

I personally think it looks alright. The first one was good, and the twist wasn't like M Night Shamalongadingdong's twists.

Ripper as in good haha.

I never knew they were done by Aussies.

I saw the first one and thought it was alright. The mastermind was just a (fairly) random guy though, which made it sort of annoying. Still, the stuff that happened was great.

The whinny guy's character (Elwes, is that his name?) totally ruined the movie for me with his ridiculous over-acting. I inadvertently laughed out loud during several "serious" scenes.

Yup, ripper as in good. Or 'You beauty' or ... Wait, scrap that. I liked the mastermind. It was interesting how it was under our noses the whole time. I hope the doctor, Lawrence, in coming movies becomes Jigsaw - because Spoiler: John aka Jigsaw, has inoperable cancer and kinda has to die soon. because his wife leaves him or something. It's possible because Jigsaw does his little games on people for reasons. Like the girl who had the reverse-bear trap. She was the only survivor, and stopped taking drugs because of that. You can see Jigsaw's inspiration, and how someone could turn into him.

Although I must agree with docbungle - some of the acting was crap.

But done for a million (aussie, so like 750,000 or less US) dollars, it was really well done.

I very strongly dislike horror movies. I usually think they are a waste of my time and they never keep my attention. However, this movie did keep my attention and I actually really got into it. Awesome. I had no idea that there would be a second. Thanks for the thread. Now I can't wait!

I liked the first one. But I don't usually go out to see movies unless I hear stellar reviews from many people.

Well.. The run-down of the second movie. I liked it. Unfortunately I picked the plot-twist from the end before I went out to the cinema. Good guessing, I guess (there's actually a couple of clues from the last movie + using your brain).

The ending when you see it is kinda lame. Then about after ten minutes when you are driving home you go - HOLY SHIT. I just got it.

I really did like it. The acting was good and it showed a different type of hero. Mason, a detective, wasn't a good guy. But he was the good guy. Interesting.

And yes, the freaky pig/doll thingy was back.

Over all - 2 thumbs up.

Wait on second thoughts, I think after I've calmed down for the hype, there are some downsides (this is why it is a seperate post) that I decided to omit, but still on the whole it was a great movie. Not so much downsides - as suggestions for next time.

1. Plot twists - too fast and most of them minor. Unfortunately, with knowledge of the prior movie you can instantly guess one or two. But still, it's fun to know you are up there in Jigsaw type intelligence.

2. Don't ask me why but it feels so... americanized. They jam packed it with actors to develop more of a plot. Unfortunately, with their increased budget, they didn't increase the length of the movie. Most of the characters were underdeveloped therefore defeating the purpose of it. Sure they were better actors - but I'd rather have a good developed script then actors which aren't the greatest.

3. It's aimed more to the masses. It has succumbed to the cliche of the horror genre - 'fast action = fast $$$s'. This left less pyschology - and for the cult followers even if we did find out some more about old characters, sometimes we feel a little left out.

But overall, I'm being picky. My suggestion would be go see this - or regret it. (And yes, there was blood).

I just got back from seeing it and we all liked it. The general consensus is that its better than the first one. And Xavier, what an asshole!
It reminded me of Cube. Strangers wake up in a strange place with rooms full of booby-traps. Still good fun, with better acting, and the scene was set at the end for a sequel. Not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing....

I was thinkin Saw II was gonna suck compared to the first one... but looking at the ratings on IMDB (generally more reliable than rottentomatoes, which only gave it 37%), being 7.5 means it's damn good.

Relatively speaking, of course.

Horror movies rarely get rated that high - granted it'll go down over time as more votes come through, but anytime you see a spike like that, it usually means it's pretty decent.

It was ok. I found the first one much better as each person had a focal point. I had the ending figured out in about 20 minutes.. however the one part Spoiler: where the cop stopped the tape caught me a bit off guard. Of course, that made it all seam together. I give it one thumb up.

I went and saw it yesterday...

It was alright, but it wasn't as good as the first. I picked out the two main plot twists about 15 minutes into the movie - what they all had in common, and why that reverse-bear-trap girl was there.

The one thing that did kinda get on my nerves, though is...

Spoiler: The whole premise of being stuck inside that house. I mean - they had many people in there, and plaster isn't hard to break. The only door they broke through was the one that had "Exit" painted on it? And they were surprised when they found metal there?

I dunno, I guess I just would have been more satisfied if they stayed in the house to avoid releasing the nerve gas outside, or to find the antidote, or something. Being trapped inside a house for that long when you have tools available to break down walls seems a bit ridiculous...

Cheers to that, I'm buying it this weekend. Have you found Saw in 60 seconds part 1 and then part 2? Have you found the mockumentary with Billy - the doll?

If not, stop reading. Go to your DVD. No sleep, no eat, no drink. Watch them.

Mark Wahlberg was on one of the late night talk show's last week and he mentioned that.

Said it was a low budget movie, Saw II, and the pay wasn't all that grand.

Yeah. It's seriously overrated in my opinion. There's some atrocious acting, and the twist sucks - or rather, Spoiler: that it's just some totally random character which couldn't possibly be deduced by the viewer. It was alright, but nothing stellar, although it had plenty of creative deaths.

I just saw the first one tonight, and thought it was pretty lame.

SPOILER: However, I thought the part where he was sawing off his leg was one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. If you have it watch that part and take note of when he throws the saw down.

I just watched Saw 2, a bit predictable.. but still good.

Now, for the quoted part.. I was constantly thinking of Cube as I watched this movie as well. It had so many similarities.. which was good, cause I enjoyed the Cube movies...

Saw 2 is worth a watch, and if you like the Saw/Saw 2 (mainly Saw 2)-type setup, check out Cube, then Hypercube, then Cube 3 (I think it was called)..

Well here comes the main spoiler so I'll keep it short and sweet. Spoiler: Is anyone else bummed about Amanda being the new Jigsaw, I know she's twisted and she might be as smart as Jigsaw, but I just can't see her not figuring out 'Wait a second, there's something wrong about practically killing people'. The scenario I'd like is for Amanda to go crazy killing people, and making the police go all over her, and Jigsaw who wasn't quite dead, to have to trap Amanda or deal with her to keep his name from being tarnished. The two outcomes I'd like; 1) Jigsaw wins, dies but then we see Daniel angry from his fathers loss go crazy and become Jigsaw - he'd be really good. 2) Amanda to win, but to be given some disease or something that makes the next movie worth watching. Eitherway I don't like how it's set up for a sequel - oh well.

Done
