Court TV Shows
I am working on a show called "Texas Justice". Does anyone ever watch this stuff? I have never seen a completed episode. It's supplied by FOX and we are told it is shipped all over the place. For all of the lawyers, I do not believe this a violation of my non-discolure form.

I actually watch this when my wife forgets to watch her soap operas. Court shows are a guilty pleasure for me, as are dating shows. I live in Grand Rapids, if that is of interest to you. What do you do for the show, if you don't mind me asking?

i see these shows as little more than reality-tv garbage where losers who want their five minutes (they don't even deserve the full fifteen) of fame air out their dirty laundry in the hopes of vindicating themselves of their petty disputes on national tv. it's rubbish, pure and simple. it does little more than to allow people with fucked up lives to assure themselves that at least they're not as bad as these dumbasses. it's barely a notch over shit like the springer show, which in my book is the lowest of the low.
all of that said, as long as there are losers who get off on this garbage, these shows will continue. as it seems this show is your livelyhood, congradulations. you're in for some job security.

anleja just now said he was one of the ones that watched them. Surely he's not a loser just for watching?

I agree about the shows like that being dreck, I just wouldn't go so far as saying those who watch are losers.
You're absolutely right when you say it depends on what they get out of it. Some people might use it as a way to boost their spirit. Compare and contrast their lives with the "stars" lives, you might say. Oh well, to each his own, for me.

Great, I somehow feel obliged to defend myself for saying I watch this. First of all, I basically consider the vast majority of television as trash, I don't even waste the money to get cable. I wrote a thesis in high school about the negative effects of television. When I do watch television, it with with a morbid fascination akin to driving slowly past a car wreck.
As far as myself using the people on these shows as a mirror to see how good my life is compared to them, I really don't think that is the case. I am interested in observing how people act when they know they are in front of the lens of the camera. Like some sociology experiment, I suppose. I think calling people who watch these shows "losers" is over-simplifying and over-gereralizing things. It's not like everyone talks to their televisions, saying "you tell that asshole what's up" or "man, you are a dumb bitch for for even THINKING he's going to believe your lies." Sorry if this post is excessive, but the way I see it is that I am accused of leading a fucked up life and being a loser for watching a show. Hopefully I'm taking this the wrong way and you were referring to OTHER people who take these shows seriously, in which case I apologize. But if you are saying that ANYONE who watches these is a fuck-up, excuse me if I take offense. Trust me, I know these shows are the empty calories of TV, but I think people are able to watch a half-hour show every once in a while and not need to be concerned that it is going to rot their brain or turn them into social deviants or whatever. I'll end by saying people should not be so quick to paint others with such broad strokes. And again, forgive me if your post, Phredgreen, wasn't intended to be an immediate response to my own. *edit-come to think of it, why are these shows different that others, in that everything on network television is basically a way to get commercials out to the public, nothing else? Surely some shows are "better" than others, as far as how it is written and acted, but what is there to really gain from watching even the best-written show? I can't think of anything. I think if someone is criticized for watching a specific show, they may as well be criticized for watching television, period. Last edited by anleja; 10-05-2003 at 11:41 AM.. |

i appreciate your explaination, anleja, i can completely understand how someone interested in the effects of real people being put in front of cameras would be interesting to watch, and like i said twice, my opinion of the viewers of these shows completely depends on what they are getting out of these shows.
the reason i feel as strongly as i do is that my ex was, in a way, raised watching garbage like these, along with daytime talk shows, and that was how she learned to develop her argument/debating skills - through lies, villification, goading, namecalling, and blatant violence. i never really thought much about these shows (beyond a blanket feeling of not liking them) until i lived with aforementioned ex, when i realized the damaging effects that these shows really do have on individuals. i appreciate your clarification and sincerely hope you don't think too low of me for disliking these shows and what they do to a great portion of their viewers.

Phredgreen, thanks for YOUR clarification on your position of MY position. I'm also glad to see there are no hard feelings for the difference in opinion. I can completely understand your perspective. I'm glad to see that your comments were directed more towards people like your ex than myself
I must add that I am interested in what exactly Elegant Holmes does for this show. I think a behind-the-scenes perspective would be interesting, maybe even (or especially) to people who don't like it. Like, a "know your enemy" thing, haha. Hopefully Elegants non-disclosure form will allow for at least a few revealing stories. *edit- I have to say, Phredgreen, the idea of a girlfriend using argument tactics found on court shows/daytime crap is frightening. Thanks to all for responding.
What would you like to know?
The cases are real cases filed in civil court all over the country. We have no actors, except some in the audience who are out of work. We normally schedule 10 cases a day and shoot in three day blocks. The litigants never see eachother until "showtime". They have producers assigned to them to rile them up a bit. Some of the cases we do never see the final cut. Some back out at the last minute, which means an extra hour of drinking for me. (Each case is taped for an hour or so) Sometimes I question the worth of humanity. Cases involving relatives who can't communicate and people's greed. We have had all sorts of scams and seedy individuals. I can't believe that our courts are clogged with some of this petty nonsense. Often a shower still leaves me feeling dirty. Then again, there are several funny ones. |
