Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sing-a-long
Buff The Vampire Slayer: The Musical
If you have an opportunity and are a BTVS fan I urge you to check this out Buffy Sing-a-long if it makes it to your city. The idea is that you get to watch on the big screen the episode Once More With Feeling and sing along kareoke style. There is an opening warm up with some "Buffy-ioke" where people come up to voice over different parts of different shows. The one we saw as them voicing part of the Hush episode. If you are a BTVS fan it is very enjoyable to watch this episode again and perform little bits ala Rocky Horror Picture Show. If you have never done RHPS or never had care for it, this is an opportunity to do it for something that you do care for. Skogafoss and I went to it this past weekend and we had been dying to go since we heard about it in March. Each month would go by and we'd not be able to go for whatever reason. It was a blast!!!! I got some fake vampire teeth, a little GRRR ARRRGH finger monster, and a few other goodies....

Yeah I've been to two now and had a blast both times. People are so into it, it's crazy. The line to get in was around the block, and everybody was psyched. During an audience participation bit at the beginning, a couple volunteered to go on stage to perform and mentioned that they had met each other at the last sing-a-long! Pretty cool.
Also cool is the makeup of the audience, which of course contains its share of Comic Book Guys, but is really heavily female. I can't think of another show/movie in the Geek Hall of Fame that is so gender balanced (well, maybe Firefly/Serenity, also by Joss Whedon). Plus, this show was canceled like 3 years ago and it's clear that people really miss it. At least we've got Season 8 now...

Before I say anything else, let me first say that I would love to see this and think it's a hilariously awesome way to update the "interactive movie" with a new cult classic event. I will have to see about getting my fiance to come with me when it's in SF.
Having said that, the best part about the second video is the part where the girl says "It's like Rocky Horror except that instead of making fun of it, we appreciate it." First of all, based on the rest of the video clip, that's completely untrue. The "shut up Dawn" is straight off the cues from RHPS. Also, BTVS is nothing if not camp and is an amazingly self-conscious show. It's very self referential and cognizant of its place in pop culture. The premise of "Once More with Feeling" is absolutely absurd, but it works because the songs are catchy and we love the characters and we love laughing at how silly, and yet touching, the whole thing is. Which, really, is exactly what makes RHPS work. So I'm not sure what she's talking about, and the other people they interviewed were pretty awesome too. I second xepherys's question, though. Where do you get one of those monsters?!? PS the first: That first video features one of Anya's best moments. PS the second: The theater in SF that it's playing at is ridiculously close to where I live. GREAT SUCCESS! Last edited by Frosstbyte; 07-17-2007 at 11:51 PM.. |

omg mexican! it's only the second BEST episode ever. The first, of course, being Hush (yeah, I know, too many accolades... it's still my favorite). The third best being the halloween episode from the second (?) season with the fear demon. "I should have paid attention to the caption... actual size" BWAHAHAH!

And it's true that Halloween and Dopplegangland and Hush and Conversations with Dead People and Fool for Love are all really good, too. But for my money you just can't beat The Body. It doesn't even matter what television show that was - just happened to be BTVS. If you've ever experienced the death of a loved one, that episode is like a punch to the gut. It's probably the only time I've ever seen death treated realistically on TV.
