Fine artist?
Dunno if this is the best place to post this.. but oh well worth a shot!
Was wondering if any of you know anyone (personally) who's some what successful as a fine artist. Someone who considers that their profession or did at some point in time, and would have considerable information and advice on what it takes to sell your work. Someone who runs their own website would be preferable. Maybe even one of you? Although I'm sure this crowd is more into graphic stuff =P Yay help me out! I personally think that if you are considering to sell your own artwork over the net, is just to setup a well done page for yourself, submit your site to a few search engines and just wait for the e-mails to roll in. And 'this' crowd, as you put it, dabble in alot of different things, just look through the threads

I'm looking to hopefully find someone who is atleast moderately successful. I don't mean someone who just paints on the side or has it as a hobby, but rather an actual full-fledged career. So no need to take offense to my comment, just seems most artists end up in graphic design to have a more stable job.
Also, I'm looking for someone who doesnt just run a website exclusively, but also dabbles in other art venues as their MAIN way to sell themselves. -- Thanks in advance if you guys know of such a person! |

My girlfriend's boss's wife is a ceramics (art based, not utilitarian) kinda person, and she runs a studio here in town.
I think the thing that's made her pretty successful is that she lives/works in Athens, OH where it's very, very easy to find success as an artist. I'll try talking to some of my friends that do art, but most of them have just ended up teaching studio classes at college to pay the bills (and they're VERY talented and sell a lot of work).

Well, Athens (as you may know if you've ever been here) is a very liberal town that places a huge emphasis on art, partially because it's a college town, and partially because that's just a big part of the community. It's also a great place if you're into the whole "save the environment" kinda thing.
But, for a town that probably only has 10,000 people other than students, it's host to at least 5 galleries or museums (that I can think of, I know there's way more), quite a few private studios, and some community groups that help underpriviledged people through art. Most college towns are more receptive to the artistic fields, but some (such as Athens) are very ingrained with the arts, visual, performance or otherwise.

Yeah I was there about a year ago.. Visited a college up there -- just seemed kind of a boring area. Lots of rich suburban college kids who are into art and liberal studies. I guess market wise it would be a good area though -- visited some of the stores. Mediocre work that is way overpriced.
