My girlfriend's boss's wife is a ceramics (art based, not utilitarian) kinda person, and she runs a studio here in town.
I think the thing that's made her pretty successful is that she lives/works in Athens, OH where it's very, very easy to find success as an artist.
I'll try talking to some of my friends that do art, but most of them have just ended up teaching studio classes at college to pay the bills (and they're VERY talented and sell a lot of work).
