Never ending period?
I had hernia surgery the 19th of January and started my period on the 23rd. I am on Seasonale and have not had trouble with spotting in between the normally scheduled periods since my first packet - over a year ago now. I was right in the middle of my packet and not supposed to start bleeding. I missed no pills - even the day I had surgery. It's has been back and forth between spotting and full fledged bleeding almost constantly since then. I had a 2 day respite where the bleeding stopped. I have talked to the surgeon and my own regular Dr about this. They've both told me that I shouldn't be overly concerned and that's it's a reaction of my body to the physical stress of the surgery. My Dr gave me the option of taking progesterone pills to stop the bleeding but told me that I'd end up having to deal with "withdrawal" bleeding later when I went off them. I'm so sick of having this constantly to deal with and not getting much sex as a consequence (though we've had fun in the shower a few times) that I'm tempted to take the progesterone pills.
Has anyone here dealt with this kind of thing or taken the progesterone to stop a period? I took POP's while I was still nursing but never went off really - just switched to regular estrogen/progesterone pills. So I never dealt with the "withdrawal" bleeding she spoke of. Any thoughts or suggestions?? Anything I can eat or vitamins I can take to help my body deal with this stress? I am taking iron to help with the blood loss albeit minor the last couple days.

I am also on constant pills (not Seasonale - just constant dose ortho cyclen that I get one month at a time) and about 2-3 years into taking the pills "full time" I started to spot early, too. The way I fixed it was to just stop the pills and have a full-on period, and then start up again. I don't know if Seasonale lets you just stop and start whenever you want, but if they're constant-dose all the pills should be the same and you should be able to stop and start over whenever you want.

It is normal for a surgery to mess with a period - the same thing happened with my knee surgery last May.
- I have taken Progesterone to start a period (I hadnt had one in three months and the hormonal tensions was killing me) and to stop one. It is bloody damn expensive - but if you are young I would recommend taking half of the recommended dose. The stuff is usually used for women in their fourties to deal with weird symptoms of menopause. I had to do this because Iwas put on Ortho - (Tri cyclen) when I was 15 -to regulate, not because of sexual activity - and I don't care what they tell me from the medical side, I know it messed with my hormonal development. It got to the point where I was very depressed and had mood swings to the point at which I didn't even recognise myself (personality) It took nearly a year for me to be able to have a regular period - I had that much of an imbalance. As it stands I won't go back on the pill till I become sexually active (married for me) - and even then - I have contemplated having and instertable or a DUI or something. But I am a walking horror story for the pill. Lots of people deal well with it. Suggestions: Iron supplements will help - you will notice the difference within 2 days (energy wise) - A decafinated green or chamomile tea will help with feelings of tension or stress in the morning. Also - getting exactly 8 hours of sleep or even a little less - and at the same time every night - will do wonders. If anyone wants my complete pill horror story just PM me :P

When you took the progesterone pills and then went off, how bad was the bleeding then and how long did it last. I typically have migranes with my normal periods (one reason I've avoided just letting my body go through a normal period and then going back on as you suggested Lurkette- thanks) and I also have severe cramps at times. Right now I'm not dealing with either. I'm just irritated, somewhat tired (but taking Iron) and ready to get back to normacy. If the progesterone pill won't cause more than a normal period then I may go ahead and go with it. Also I do have good insurance so the cost isn't an issue for me.
Did the progesterone pills cause you more mood swings or did it help you Brooke?

Hmmm...I haven't had a surgery, but I have had the 'neverending bleeding' problem. I'm taking Depo Provera, though. During that period, I was irritable, pissy, irrational, and my libido hit rock-bottom. I also had stomachaches occasionally. I bled non-stop for, I think, at least two weeks.
So I don't think you're the only one. However, I would still see the doctor, and have him/her monitor it. |

Thanks all. I think I am going to go ahead with getting the progesterone pills. Hopefully I can go through the "withdrawal" bleeding when it's time for my normal period.
I've used the pill for several years (but never started it till I was 25 anyway) and have had very little trouble. It has helped control my frequent migranes and I have less cramping during my period when I've been on the pill. I saw my mother on the patch and without changing her diet she gained a pound of weight every other day while she was on it. My sister-in-law was on the shot and liked it but over a couple years went from a size 4 to a size 18 - not pretty. I have experienced no weight gain or other side effects with the pill so it's what works for me for now. If I ever change what type of BC I use I will most likely get permanantly fixed or an IUD. Thanks again for the suggestions.
