That might have been me, talking about the Progestin-only pill. My sister and I both experienced increased libido while on it, and I've heard other women say the same thing. You have to stop having sex long enough to remember to take it at exactly the same time every day though.

The "Progestin-only-pill" (also called "POP" by those who don't want to pronounce progestin I guess) has no estrogen in it but still works just as well. I think the one I was taking was called Micronor. I believe it still allows you to ovulate but prevents the sperm from ever reaching the egg...don't quote me on that point though. It's more often given to women who are over 35 and who smoke, as a lot of the risk factors associated with the pill have to do with the estrogen.
Anyway, I did experience some weight gain, moodiness, that sort of thing. The most noticable side effect is that you won't have regular periods at all, just odd random bleeding here and there. It was usually brief and light, but you have to be prepared for it to come any old time. And since the amount of hormones in it is lower than even the amountof progestin in the regular pill, you have to be sure you take it at the same time every day or use a backup method, for three days I think it was. http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.1.monographs/CPS-%20Monographs/CPS-%20(General%20Monographs-%20M)/MICRONOR.html |

My doctor put me on that originally, but neglected to tell me I had to take it at the same time every day. Consiquently, I got pregnant. Not good when you don't want that.

I can't believe a doctor would be so negligent as to not inform you of that! It's common knowledge about those kind of pills. Go to any webspace on POPs and it tells you so. It also tells you that you need to use another form of BC for the entire first month of taking it. One missed pill and you have to wait a month to have it be effective again. Also, no doubling up like the others.
Thanks for all your help Squishor. I won't be getting those. From my experience, no pill is worth all their side effects. |

Yeah, you have to take at exactly the same time every day. If you're off by a few hours with "normal" birth control, you'll be fine. With POP, not so. It's compleatly ineffective.
I assumed my doctor told me all the information I needed to know about the birth control and did not do any research on it afterwards. Nor did she tell me it was a POP. So, I'm a bit ticked off at the doctor. We've since changed insurance plans and I am fortunatly no longer with such a neglagent doctor.
