strange birth control side effects?
After being on ortho-try-cyclin for 6 years, I have recently switched to Yasmin.
I started taking the pills on Sunday, and within a few hours, my stomach and back were really itchy. It got so bad that I had to take benedryl that night. Since then, the itchiness has come and gone. I just took my 4th pill, and the itchiness is back. I read the pamphlet that came with the package, but it mentioned nothing about experiencing anything like this. Has anyone else had this happen on Yasmin? Or, is this just me being overly attentive to any possible side effects (real or imagined!)? |

It wouldn't hurt to call your Doc and ask him the same thing you asked here.
It could be nothing, something minor like dryer skin, or it could be an allergic reaction. Often in an allergic reaction the itching would only be a result of a rash not just itchy by itself. Do you have any redness or raised areas, at least none that aren't scratch marks anyway. When I was on any pill and some were worse than others, I would get very dry skin that would start out as being itchy and then become flaky. Try using a rich cream on the places that are itchy and see if that solves it. Medline Plus does not show itchiness as a side effect. So in my UNprofessional opinion this is either a result of a mild rash that you did not notice yet, or it's dry skin.

you could be very allergic to it.
itching = your body trying to release toxins it doesn't like/cannot process. Have you had any full hives? Stop taking it at once and call your doctor. keep us updated. sweetpea

I haven't had any hives, and I can only see slight redness. It's not very visible (to the point I wonder if I'm imagining it).
My skin doesn't feel dry, so I don't think that's the problem... I've got a call into the doctor, so I'll have more info when he calls me back. |

The doctor says is isn't a typical side effect of Yasmin (which I already knew from reading the pamphlet). They don't seem to think there's a connection. I'll see if it goes away in the next day or two, then I'll call to make an appointment to have them switch me to something else.
Thanks for you advice! |

Get thyself to another doctor! I had the same issue with the first two birth controls I was ever on- I'd take them about one in the afternoon, start itching around five, itch from five to nine at night, then stop itching. DON'T let the doctor tell you that it's not your birth control- unless you've recently changed laundry detergent/fabric softener/etc. But first, go off of BC for a cycle and see if the itching stops.
Yes, you can itch from birth control- it's an allerigc reaction. Yasmin uses a particular type of synthetic hormone- just like I was, you're probably allergic to whatever kind it is. No big whoop, just time to experement with your birth control some more!

Nope, hun, I had actually forgotten about the itching until you brought it up- that was one of the reasons that ultimately I got an IUD. I just react strangely to BC. Anywho, the itching is just a sign that your body doesn't like something in the BC. Go back to the doctor, and if you feel like he/she is not listening to your concerns, find another doctor. You can't spit without hitting a doctor, at least where I live, and life is too short to try and drill through some thick-headed old-school MD's head just what you'd like to change.
