Fall Back...
So, this Sunday October 30th, is perhaps the best day on the calendar... it's that day where we get back that hour given up in April... Though come 2007, it gets really confusing... but that's another thread....
Does your state/country participate in the whole daylight saving time process? Don't forget to change your smoke detector batteries too

Whoa, thanks for the reminder, I seriously forgot and would have been an hour early to everything.

I have heard that daylight savings time was done for farmers... don't know *why*, but I think I heard that in college somewhere.
Anyone know why there is DST?

More than you'd ever want to know about DST:

Ugh, I never understood why people liked this bs. Yeah, I know the economic reasons, but come on...
It makes life unnecessarily more complicated. edit - and it is Daylight saving time time, not savings Last edited by Coppertop; 10-29-2005 at 02:12 PM.. |

I leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark all winter. No wonder I've got Seasonal Affective Disorder. At least I sleep better when there's less daylight. Most of DST I get about 3-5 hours a night. 6-8 in the non-DST nights.

Yeah, what sucks about going back to Standard time is that by December, it's dark around 4:30 here. That blows hard.
I'd prefer to switch to DST year round so we have some daylight left in the afternoon in winter. 5:30 sunsets I can handle, 4:30 sunsets piss me off.

I'm up during the time change! I was playing Guild Wars and told people it was about 2:00 and then a few minutes later I looked at my computer's clock and it said 1:15. Confused the hell out of me for a minute. So now I'm curious as to what time it'll say I posted this post. For the record, it's 1:55 AM.
Edit - it's timestamped correctly. |

Living on the western edge of the time zone makes the switch to EDT a fun thing. It stays light here until 9:15-9:30p during the early summer months. Of course if you have kids maybe that's a different story but I like it.
I like getting the extra hour back in the fall though because on a day like today I feel like I can have one more cup of home brewed coffee before I have to run off through the Sunday routine.

How well do we think computers, the ones we're used to automatically changing DST on and off, will work under the new DST dates?
Has anyone heard how, say Microsoft, is going to update for this?

In Saskatchewan, when the subject was first debated in the Legislature back in the day (50's? 60's?) the measure was defeated because (I am not making this up, we learned it in history class)
The dairy farmers said that the time change would stress out their cows. Who can imagine milking their cows an hour late EVERY DAY IN THE WINTER? Gotta love that logic. In Saskatchewan, we do not participate in DST. It really fucks with your head when the times change for all of the shows on TV. I think it would be easier to switch.

I think it's funny how my two kids take this, they're 9 & 10yo boys. For the last couple of years they've been old enough to notice the process of clock changing, but they keep referring to the pre-change time as the "real time". The only solution I can think of is to send them to Relatively Summer Camp this year instead of sports camp.

Hey, did you guys hear about the urban legend that the US department of Transportation did studies and found a 7% increase in accidents when people got 1 less hour of sleep on average (spring forward) and a corresponding 7% decrease when they slept in (fall back), suggesting that the majority of accidents could be prevented by having well rested people drive?
I have no links, no data and no corresponding proof, but I just heard it. Oh well, now that I have posted it on the internet, it must be true.

I was born in CA but I moved to other states quite a bit. From from CA I moved to IN and then to AZ. In AZ and IN they don't do daylight savings, so it's strange to be back in a state that does do it. It's actually kind of nice. Feels good waking up and setting the clock back.
