Fall Back...

So, this Sunday October 30th, is perhaps the best day on the calendar... it's that day where we get back that hour given up in April... Though come 2007, it gets really confusing... but that's another thread....

Does your state/country participate in the whole daylight saving time process?

Don't forget to change your smoke detector batteries too

paddyjoe 10-28-2005 02:40 PM

Yeah, the end of daylight savings time. It actually sucks to no end. Starting Sunday, it'll be getting dark at 5:30.

Go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark....BLAH!!!

jerimya 10-28-2005 03:26 PM

Phoenix, AZ is great we stay on MST year round. To me using daylight savings makes no sense. Seems like a lot of hoopla for very little gain.

onodrim 10-28-2005 03:30 PM

Whoa, thanks for the reminder, I seriously forgot and would have been an hour early to everything. :p

Sage 10-28-2005 03:38 PM

I have heard that daylight savings time was done for farmers... don't know *why*, but I think I heard that in college somewhere.

Anyone know why there is DST?

mrklixx 10-28-2005 10:35 PM

More than you'd ever want to know about DST:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_savings_time

http://tf.nist.gov/general/daylightsavingtime.html

(note: apologies to the linkaphobic, but there is too much text to c/p)

ZeroKel 10-29-2005 12:13 PM

I enjoy the Fall Back time change much more than the Spring Ahead, but I definitely agree, the fact that it's dark by 5:30 is a total downer...

The purpose is to match daylight hours with the times that people are actually awake. It gives us more daylight to enjoy outdoor activities and saves electricity by having people turn on their lights an hour later in the evenings.

I can't stand coming off of DST. The early darkness aggravates my seasonal depression.

Coppertop 10-29-2005 01:50 PM

Ugh, I never understood why people liked this bs. Yeah, I know the economic reasons, but come on...

It makes life unnecessarily more complicated.

edit - and it is Daylight saving time time, not savings

noodle 10-29-2005 02:06 PM

I leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark all winter. No wonder I've got Seasonal Affective Disorder. At least I sleep better when there's less daylight. Most of DST I get about 3-5 hours a night. 6-8 in the non-DST nights.

Pip 10-29-2005 02:18 PM

We do DST here too for some reason. It's a bit of a joke, considering where I live the sun is up for 18 hours/day in June and for six hours/day in December. One hour back and forth? Sheesh.

JumpinJesus 10-29-2005 08:08 PM

Yeah, what sucks about going back to Standard time is that by December, it's dark around 4:30 here. That blows hard.

I'd prefer to switch to DST year round so we have some daylight left in the afternoon in winter. 5:30 sunsets I can handle, 4:30 sunsets piss me off.

shortynickel 10-29-2005 08:29 PM

this is the reason why i love fall...i get an extra hour sleep or if i am doing something(ie. tfp'ing), i get an extra hour doing it!

i live in EST zone, so we do the whole DST thing.

Or...if you're like my wife...you'd actually be on time. :D

FngKestrel 10-30-2005 01:55 AM

I'm up during the time change! I was playing Guild Wars and told people it was about 2:00 and then a few minutes later I looked at my computer's clock and it said 1:15. Confused the hell out of me for a minute. So now I'm curious as to what time it'll say I posted this post. For the record, it's 1:55 AM.

Edit - it's timestamped correctly.

dlish 10-30-2005 02:01 AM

here in australia we put our clocks forward an hour

Blackthorn 10-30-2005 06:04 AM

Living on the western edge of the time zone makes the switch to EDT a fun thing. It stays light here until 9:15-9:30p during the early summer months. Of course if you have kids maybe that's a different story but I like it.

I like getting the extra hour back in the fall though because on a day like today I feel like I can have one more cup of home brewed coffee before I have to run off through the Sunday routine. :D

I'm just glad we don't live any further north... in London it is dark at 4:00 or so...

billege 10-31-2005 07:58 AM

How well do we think computers, the ones we're used to automatically changing DST on and off, will work under the new DST dates?

Has anyone heard how, say Microsoft, is going to update for this?

BigBen 10-31-2005 07:59 AM

In Saskatchewan, when the subject was first debated in the Legislature back in the day (50's? 60's?) the measure was defeated because (I am not making this up, we learned it in history class)

The dairy farmers said that the time change would stress out their cows. Who can imagine milking their cows an hour late EVERY DAY IN THE WINTER?

Gotta love that logic.

In Saskatchewan, we do not participate in DST. It really fucks with your head when the times change for all of the shows on TV. I think it would be easier to switch.

BadNick 10-31-2005 08:07 AM

I think it's funny how my two kids take this, they're 9 & 10yo boys. For the last couple of years they've been old enough to notice the process of clock changing, but they keep referring to the pre-change time as the "real time". The only solution I can think of is to send them to Relatively Summer Camp this year instead of sports camp.

I used to enjoy that extra hour of sleep. However, my 3 year old doesn't understand DST.

You and me both, Pal. You and me both. :(

BigBen 10-31-2005 08:58 AM

Hey, did you guys hear about the urban legend that the US department of Transportation did studies and found a 7% increase in accidents when people got 1 less hour of sleep on average (spring forward) and a corresponding 7% decrease when they slept in (fall back), suggesting that the majority of accidents could be prevented by having well rested people drive?

I have no links, no data and no corresponding proof, but I just heard it.

Oh well, now that I have posted it on the internet, it must be true.

5757 10-31-2005 09:08 AM

I was born in CA but I moved to other states quite a bit. From from CA I moved to IN and then to AZ. In AZ and IN they don't do daylight savings, so it's strange to be back in a state that does do it. It's actually kind of nice. Feels good waking up and setting the clock back. ;)

When I was in college, I participated in a psychology survey relating to sleep schedules and traffic accidents. I never saw the results, but the studies are being done.
