Bo Derek-a little over 20 years ago, it was no work at all, her and my family had a mutual friend and we were both at a very small get together hosted by that friend. I was 16....it was 1985....imagine being 16 in 1985 and meeting Bo fucking Derek...

the only "famous" person I've ever met is Dennis Haskins, the guy who played Mr. Belding on "Saved by the Bell." He did a lecture at my school freshman year.
|
I was at a Cubs game in 2004 and Katie Holmes' seats were a couple rows in front of mine. She had thrown out the first ball, and was on the field before the game. About the second inning there she was 2' in front of me in the aisle. :)
I've also briefly met a few sports personalities at various games or events: Bob Feller (HoF Pitcher), Hersey Hawkins (former NBA player), Elton Brand (NBA player). I got an email reply once from Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) from an email I had sent him concerning an appearance he made, if that counts. |
I have metSteven Tyler and Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies fame. I've also had beers with the Creegan Brothers. My sister is on speaking terms with the band.
They're all pretty cool guys. Great sense of humour from the lot of them. |
I met Calpernia Addams at a holiday party with my sister in December of 2004.

Thi isn't about me but my son. He is a great fan of the group 'In Flames' and has always wanted to meet them. To accomplish this he actually managed to get them booked to play in Vancouver, by phoning around , finding a venue and then contacting their management.
He has been given a special pass to the sold out show ( since it exist because of him!) and will definitely be meeting them in just a few weeks. They definitely know him now as he has made them a lot a money in the process ! The power of taking action! |
Since the last time I posted I've met quite a few more. Several Drag Racers and had the chance to talk to kid rock but he was eating in a restaurant with his family trying to be incognito so I left him be. I looked quite a few times and by the look I knew it was him. I just smiled and left it at that. I lived in Michigan when that happened. He also showed up to 131 raceway one day when Alpha Phi and I were there.

I'm surprised at the size of this thread. Never met anyone famous, don't much care either. Although it would be cool to have met robert heinlein, carl sagan, or stephen hawking but more from what wisdom I could garner from them.
|
Ted Nugent. I booked him at my college, so he let me tape his concert--nice guy.
Miss USA 1980. Can't remember her name, but I still have her picture somewhere. I also have a picture of me sitting next to Gennifer Flowers. Bill should have stayed with her. Met "Ice," one of the "American Gladiators" while renting a car in Maui. She gave my son an autographed picture. Very hot. Played 18 holes of golf with Dan Fouts. Do Jim Morrison's parents count? |
I shook hands with Barack Obama yesterday.

Saw John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon when they made presidential visits in my state.
Walked by Andy Warhol on NYC sidewalk. Met and conversed with (I am a waiter...) Bishop Desmond Tutu, Leonard Nimoy, Lance Armstrong, Alec Baldwin, Neal Boortz, Matthew Broderick, Skip Caray, David Byrne, Jeff Daniels, Kristin Davis, Mike Ditka, Nora Ephron, Brendan Fraser, Victor Garber, Julia Butterfly Hill, Martin Luther King III, Nathan Lane, Spike Lee, Laura Linney, Tina Louise, Andrea McArdle, Matthew McConaughey, Keanu Reeves, Kenny Rogers, Neil Sedaka, Mary Steenburgen, George Stephenopoulos, Michael Stipe, Fran Tarkenton, Michael Vick..... |
im disappointed host. is that all...
just out of curiosity, you say you conversed with them. what do you talk about when you talk to a celebrity?? or is it just run of the mill ' hi hows the weather' banter? |
Quote:
My experience living and working in Manhattan was that celebrities could come and go in public generally as they pleased, without the public approaching them on the street or ina restaurant. It is different in Atlanta... I saw one customer seated at a table near a famous pro athlete, get up and move near the athlete's table, and direct his young son to slip into the seat next to the athlete, while he took a quick picture of his son and the celebrity, as he murmured, "you don't mind....do you"? I've seen other guests follow celeb guests to the bathroom, or approach their table and attempt to introduce themselves. The public in Manhattan does not behave that way. Generally, people in show business, when I've asked, will talk about their work. They appreciate normal conversation, and I've never asked for a photo or an autograph. If, as you say, conversation has "progressed" to talking about the weather, and, as in the case of Laura Linney, I want to pay a compliment about a performance or ask the actor what they thought of their own work, I simply ask.... "may I say something"?, or "I saw you perform in (movie title), were you as satisfied with your performance when you viewed it on the screen, as I was? It's always different....sometimes they thank you when they observe that you have discouraged a member(s) of the public from approaching them. Almost always, they are gracious, unassuming, appreciative of the normalcy of their dining experience. Bishop Tutu .... a small, old man, finishing dinner over coffee with his wife, if you didn't know who he was, it was hard to envision, save for his charismatic smile, his role in recent history. On his way out, he thought to approach the chef, introduce himself and shake his hand, and compliment him fof the quality of the food..... One guest let me know that he was traveling to Cleveland, OH, later in the week, to be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. I heartily congratulated him. It may not seem it in, here in my 2D persona, but, I am told I have a cordial, low key, "tableside manner", that draws people out. In the dining room where I worked in NYC, the manager designated me to wait on the celebs, because he felt I treated them like people.... It's a bit like a first date with a woman who you find attractive, success in getting a second date comes after a mix of restraint, and just the right amount of warmth and personality, |
I've seen Erykah Badu and met Mr Rogers.
|
Well, excluding famous people I've seen acting on stage or playing in a ballgame:
Vince Vaughn (walking down the street in downtown Chicago. Also, at a Cubs game, he was filming a scene for some crappy romantic comedy. Dude is tall.) Dick Gephart (at an airport in Iowa when he was running for Prez. in 04. Got his autograph for my good friend, who at the time was the head of the Gephart campaign on campus.) Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea (I was a kid on vacation with my family in Wyoming. We were at a rodeo, and all of a sudden everyone turns away from the action and looks out through the back fence to the road, where a caravan of black SUVs is driving towards the stadium. Turns out to the the then-current President and his family, also on vacation. They sat maybe 20 yards from me. After the rodeo, Bill and Hillary shook hands with everyone outside near the parking lot. It's not often you get patted down by a secret service agent when you're in elementary school! In retrospect, they were at a rodeo in a state that wasn't exactly filled with supporters, but they came out and were really great and gracious with the crowd. I always respected them after that. Also, even then I thought that Chelsea must be living a weird, weird life.) Can't think of anyone else right now. But it's always been my policy to not bother a celeb if I come across one (politician's excepted, they literally owe us). They don't need to be bothered and really, I don't care that much. |
I have met quite a few, I don't know most of their names. When I go out to clubs I get to hang around the famous people of NYC quite often and most of the time I have no idea who they are until after I leave and my friends tell me who they are.
The one's I know I met: Billy Ray Cyrus Leonardo Dicaprio Sandra Bullock |
That's cool! I might have met you or your wife. I worked at the resort where Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson got married. They came to the resort about two years ago to visit while she was on tour. Nick suprised her for her birthday. So, I got to meet them both along with the couple that they always hang out with (nick was in a frat with him and they are from Kentucky). The MTV crew was also there filming. So, they stayed around afterwords and chatted with us and hung around to shoot some pool. It was pretty neat getting to meet them since I watched their show religiously! I also got to see the new dog he bought her and got to go into their suit to clean up and add refreshments for them. Nick was soo sweet...but Jessica was a bit snobby...that's for sure..

While a valet at a Hilton I "met" (More like got their bags or opened doors for them) a few people : Bob Hope - a few years before he died, even though he looked like he was near death at the time. Ms. USA and all the other contestants form that year (late 80's) Tammy Faye Baker - not nice at all and didn't tip either. Sly Stalone. Tayshaun Prince. A former NFL coach that is still family friend. The CEO of Pizza Hut - can't remember his name. etc...
|
I met Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward at the Radnor Horse Show a few years ago.
They were just walking around in the crowd and being recognized by a few people and they were responding very graciously and in a friendly manner. He actually said "hi" right to me!!! ;) I'm not sure, but I'm sort of remembering they were actually competing in one of the show events...maybe dressage? |
chet huntley bought me a drink at wolfie's in cocoa beach, fl, in may of 1969...

Twenty years ago, Linda Evans used to frequent a store/pharmacy/old fashioned soda fountain that I worked at. I made her a tuna sandwich each time. She had a home nearby, at a place called Medera Estates. Once, she asked me where to find cleaning supplies for a new house like brooms and mops. I gave her directions to Fred Meyers, thinking it was odd that she didn't know where one was. I mean, she had lived nearby for alot longer than I had worked there. Quiet voice, somewhat easy going but seemed almost a little shy or reserved. Like people had to talk to her first, but then she was sweet and quick to smile. She came in sometimes with another lady, a bit younger than she. My boss said that was her guru, and she was also her ex-husband's daughter. I did not recognize that woman but her father's name was familiar.

Eleven years ago I attended a chamber music workshop where our ensemble was conducted and coached by Itzhak Perlman. I met Steven Spielberg during its closing concert.
The conductor of the orchestra I performed with throughout high school played the conductor in the movie Fame. I also met Lukas Foss, a contemporary American composer, many years ago as a child. I've met former Poet Laureate Derek Walcott. On the sidwalk I've bumped into George Stephanopoulos (in New York), Howard Dean and James Carville (DC). |
About 10 years ago, I met Barry Williams (Greg Brady from The Brady Bunch). He was very "plastic".
|
I met Kasey Chambers when I was seventeen.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...11-280x336.jpg She came to perform in my home town of Bendigo, and all I wanted for my birthday that year was to see her perform live. That was actually quite strange, as I had only heard of her a week beforehand, watched a thirty second advert for her debut album. Anyway, I watched her perform and she blew me away. I got my photo taken with her, she signed it, and had herself a lifelong fan. |
Some names to add to my list, Cal Ripken and Billy Ripken started a little league program in central VA. Cal holds two records - most continuous games, and longest professional game with the Rochester Red Wings.
I'm hoping interviews come through for Sheryl Crow and Dar Williams. I would live on Dar's front porch just to be close to that greatness. |

good to see another aussie on the forum! welcome |
This happened a couple of weeks ago and I just remembered about this thread.
He was very charming. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Iayk5r9I8pE/S9...0/IMG_4024.JPG |
wow, what was he like charlatan? did you meet him on a boat?
i saw Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) about two weeks ago in Dubai. I was walking in a mall when i looked over and there he was. i had to do a triple take to make sure it was him. He was dressed like any normal person and was window shopping, so i let him be to enjoy his privacy. |
I once saw a guy who hosted a local cable television show for children called .. uh .. I can't remember, it was a really obscure television show.
Anyway I didn't dare go up to him because he was all like Mr. TV-Man and I was little old me while we were both checking out the hottest new furniture on display at the local IKEA. |
I met Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffee, in the early 1980's, when they were signing mini hockey sticks at a jewelery store (in Edmonton) and I was working at the IKEA next door.
Elizabeth Hurley (and her bodyguard?) walked past me in a grocery store in Nova Scotia, when she was here filming The Weight of Water. I met John Diefenbaker when my grade nine class went on a school trip to Ottawa...many years ago. |
I met Tommy Chong and Emeril Lagasse at separate book signings.
|
US Army General David Patreus gave me a fancy coin and told me to "Keep the groundhog off my buddy's back" in Iraq in 2003.
I've also met Stephen D. Mastrofski. He's kinda like the Jesus equiv in my academic field. He's a goofy, disheveled genius-type. Jerry Only from the Misfits and I keep meeting up at these loud, annoying concerts where people slam into each other all night. |

Many years ago, in 1993, my family went to San Francisco on a family vacation. We were staying at the St. Francis in Union Square. One morning Dad decided our tourist destination of the day would be Fisherman's Wharf, so we got on the cable car and went down there. We didn't bother to eat breakfast before we went; he said we could get breakfast down there. As we were walking along the wharf, he spotted a McDonalds and asked my mom if that was where she wanted to eat breakfast. My mom looked down the wharf and saw a place called Lou's open for breakfast. She doesn't like McDonalds, so Lou's it was. About halfway through our meal, these guys with suits start swarming past the restaurant's window onto the street. A week before, some guy had gone into an office building in San Francisco and shot up a bunch of office workers, so immediately my parents were hypervigilant. Then, one of the restaurant staff yelled out, "It's the President!" President Clinton was in town speaking to the national teacher's convention at Moscone. I rushed to the window just as he walked by on his cool-down walk after his morning jog. I knocked on it to get his attention and he waved back at me, smiling. I relayed this story to my former 5th grade teacher that fall, knowing she had gone to the convention and had seen President Clinton speak. She was so irritated that I got to see him more up-close than she had. |

It wasn't a boat. It was a party in a tent on the beach in Cannes. |

there's a facebook page/movement to get him to be the next Governor General of Canada. Imagine that. But by Gosh, the price is right! Speaking of Governors-General, my wife and I had dinner last saturday at a hole in the wall Korean restuaurant in Toronto (Bloor & Clinton) and in walks Adrianne Clarkeson and her husband. Who knew? They lined up just like everybody else. |
Hey Leto... I asked him if he was going to be the next GG and he just laughed and said he didn't think it was likely (note he didn't say no).
Was the Korean Restaurant you went to, Il Bun Ji? |
Quote:
I never remember the name of the restaurant. It's all in Korean except the word 'tofu'. But it is definitely a favourite of the university crowd as well as townies, as every meal there has a cost of $7.08. Wait, I'll paste in the Google streetview link: (it's called Puk Chang Dong Soon Tofu) http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&sourc...16.09,,0,-1.44 so yummy. |
This topic has been active since 2003 and I have never seen it? Wow... My powers of observation are as keen as usual...
Several years ago Al Pachino was ahead of me in line at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He asked if the Doctor knew that HE was waiting... the nurse just told him to take a seat and wait. He was there with his family and obviously didn't want to be pestered, so I left him alone. That dude is SHORT! Phil Jackson and Danny Aiellio shopped at the store I used to work at in Redondo Beach. It was strange with Danny Aiello, I didn't approach him, but every time I looked his way, he was already staring at me as if he knew who I was or something. And if you consider the punk scene in the 90's to be big, I think every low-rent punk band that toured Southern California ended up crashing at my buddy's place at one time or another. Too many bands/people to name. |
oh yes bands... I worked as a busboy at the Holiday Inn (in Barrie, Ont) and one of my jobs was to slice beef at the dinner buffet. Well, Dr Hook was playing there, and I sliced beef for the entire band. I think that their big hit at that time was Only 16:
edit (value added video) - could be a contribution to the Hirsute thread... |
I went to school with Josie Bisett, she was really nice and talked to me a couple times.
I also met Ric Ocasek when he came into the restaurant I worked for. |
Hmmm, famous people:
former President George W. Bush Chief Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist Senator Arlen Spector former NYS Governor Pataki former US Senator Al D'Amato former Congressman Amo Houghton former Buffalo NY Mayor Anthony Masiello famous birder Roger Tory Peterson professional golfer Tom Watson professional golfer Phil Michelson professional golfer David Duval former Buffalo Bill receiver Steve Tasker former Buffalo Bill linebacker Shane Conlan Natalie Merchant, singer and former lead singer of the 10,000 Maniacs Turner Gill, current coach of the Kansas Jayhawks football team All of the above were pleasant, with the exception of Michelson, whom I watched give a young kid a nasty brushoff during a practice round at the NEC Tournament. Watson gave that same kid an autograph and a pat on the back. Oh, and Natalie Merchant babysat me once. She was a little "different" if I recall correctly. I may be missing some, but it's late and I don't care to tax my brain rememberizing more :-) |
In 1991, I was in the BWI airport, trying to get to Montreal via Boston. The whole East Coast was fogged in, so I was going to miss my connection. It was a Friday afternoon during the Atlanta/Minnesota World Series, and there was a game in Minneapolis that night. I was trying to change my flight to a direct one to Montreal, and was standing in line behind a black gentleman in a business suit who was trying to find a flight to Minneapolis. People were running everywhere trying to change flights to make connections.
I chatted with this guy for about 15 minutes about how inconvenient it was, and hard to believe in this (that) day and age. He was very pleasant to talk to, and then, just before he went up to the counter, these 3 young kids who had been watching us came running over and said, "Can we have your autograph, Mr. Aaron?" How does a life-long baseball fan spend 15 minutes talking to Hank Aaron and not recognise him???? Granted he was in a business suit, but I can only think of Kirstie Alley's classic line from Cheers that sometimes "I am too stupid to live!" |
Mike Singletary (Chicago Bears), Tony Amonte (Chicago Blackhawks), Renée Fleming (opera performer), Gary Vaynerchuk (wine expert, entrepreneur, author, and internet badass), Dick Durbin (U.S. Senator and Majority Whip), Alexi Giannoulias (Illinois State Treasurer and current U.S. Senate candidate)
I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. I almost met David Tennant and Patrick Stewart, but it was not meant to be. Onodrim and I went to England to see the production of Hamlet they were both in at the Royal Shakespeare Company. There's a small pub down the street that the actors are known to hang out at after performances and sometimes before, so of course we went there. Most of the rest of the cast did show up, but Tennant and Stewart were apparently taking the night off from public interaction. If we had gone one night earlier, they both would have been there! I'm still bummed about that. |
I've had brushes with only 3 famous (maybe semi-famous in some cases) people.
First up (on two separate occasions) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Glurrk/JCme2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Glurrk/JCme1.jpg (That's the greatest action hero in the world standing next to Jackie Chan!) ;) I also met Ken Lo, action star of many Hong Kong movies (kinda unknown in the US) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Glurrk/KenLo.jpg I also met Colonel Lee Joseph Archambault, the pilot of the space shuttle Atlantis! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...II/ArchBaz.jpg I'd almost list singer Willie Nelson here, but I don't really count it because I didn't know it was him until someone asked me if I'd noticed Willie Nelson walking past me. |
I used to live in the same town (post breakdown) as Dave Chappelle. I saw him all the time.
|
ive seen Cat Stevens ( aka Yusuf Islam) walking around the mall here a little while back
