Guthumba 12-21-2004 06:52 AM

I ran track with Lee Flowers (NFL safety for the Steeler and Seahawks), lived next to Jonathan Byrd (PGA golfer) when he was a kid and Peter Bouwlare (NFL linebacker for the Ravens).

James Dickey (author of 'Deliverance') taught me to play "Dueling Banjos" on the guitar. I met Joseph Heller (author of 'Catch-22')

I had drinks one night with the members of Collective Soul and then another night with the members of Hootie and the Blowfish.

I met Tom Ford (the designer for Gucci)...it was funny to see the girls watch him and then him checking out the guys. I ran into Cal Ripken Jr. one day after a ballgame in Baltimore...super nice guy, was very gracious.

dksuddeth 12-21-2004 07:46 AM

I met Kyle Petty, even have a picture with him, when I was 10.

Spent an afternoon in Shirley Maclaines house in New Mexico a couple of years ago.

Met Robert Urich on the set of 'the lazarus man'.

Zeppelin2Heaven 12-21-2004 07:53 AM

I met Robert Planet when Led Zeppelin was on tour.

If you were born in 1980 and LZ disbanded in December of 1980, when did you pull that off?

The last LZ tour was from May 1980 to September 1980. Bonham died on 9/25/80.

The only other times the remaining members played together was for one-shot-only deals at Live-Aid in 1985 and Atlantic's 25th anniversary concert in 1988.

Plant and Page did do the MTV Unplugged thing and the "No Quarter" tour in 1995, but that wasn't LZ...that was just Plant and Page. Big Difference. ;)

Helena Bonham Carter (hung out in her hotel room)
Sandra Oh (dinner, drinks and she sat in my lap!)
Colin Firth (sat in front of me and I held the door for him as we exited the theatre - he thanked me very much)
Keneth Welsh (dinner)
Gordon Pinsent (on a few occasions)
Angela Featherstone (dinner)
Charlton Heston (held open the door for me)
Andy Garcia (shared an elevator)
Joshua Jackson (ate dinner at the next table)
Fred Ward (had breakfast with him - he was very cool)
Pierre Trudeau (passed me on the on the street)
Rosanna Arquette and Nicholas Cage (stood two inches from me at a party... I was tempted to touch her to see if she was real)
Giullermo der Toro (interviewed him)
Kim Deal (hung out in the green room with her)

maleficent 12-21-2004 08:22 AM

Just reminded me--
Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols - had dinner at the next table at a very cute little restaurant in Westchester NY.
Phil Simms (Former quarterback of the NY Giants and now a broadcaster) had gone to Christmas Eve mass with my parents, and the church was super crowded, so I gave up my seat to some elderly woman and I went and stood in the back of the church. I couldn't help but notice my mom turning around every so often and laughing and then poking my dad and him turning around and laughing. Now, thinking my parents have gone daft, couldn't figure out what their problem was... Until I looked to the left, and standing not 6 inches from me, is this big, huge tall, blonde speciman of a man... YUMMMMM... (at that point I was oh so grateful for the part of the catholic mass when you give the sign of peace to the people around you...:)

One of my last jobs, I've worked for two different news magazine, I worked with and saw on a regular basis, a lot of people that you'd see on the Sunday Morning news shows... and we always saw famous people in the building there for interviews. Walter Cronkite was one of the most impressive people I ever met, and Katherine Graham was one of the most gracious (though I am told she could cuss like a sailor when provoked)

matthew330 12-21-2004 08:33 AM

Vincent Schiavelli
The ghost on the subway who teaches Patrick Swayze how to "move" things in that movie "Ghost"

I've never seen or met anyone famous

Faygo 12-21-2004 09:54 AM

I've seen a few met a few but only hung out with one. I went paddling and hung out with David Suzuki.

Avail 12-21-2004 08:19 PM

Wow, I've only met one famous person so far in my 19 years of existence. That was Bill Walton during a basketball camp in middle school, he was a very cool guy.

sashime76 12-22-2004 06:02 AM

Steffi Graf - got her autograph at a tennis tourney in San Diego
Karch Kiraly, Kent Steffes, Craig Buck... beach volleyball tourney in San Diego
Jermaine O'Neil - got his autograph at a company promotion
Rick Berry - sat next to him in between flights in Minneapolis
Diane Feinstein - during her visit to my former company
Randy "Duke" Cummingham, same as above
Robert Townsend - in the same waiting area at O'Hare International
David Cassidy - EFX show in Vegas
Ron Jeremy - in Vegas while attending CES, he stayed in the same hotel
I guess I have met a few famous people.

powerclown 12-22-2004 07:21 AM

A friend and myself once picked up Jeff Ward from the airport. Yeah, groupies.
Walked past Jackie Mason on Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. He looks like a puppet. Glanced at me like I owed him money.
Steffi Graf at a tennis tournament in FL. Great legs.
Walked past and exchanged 'hi's' with Jana Novotna on an early morning solitary walk.

TexanAvenger 12-22-2004 08:08 AM

Let's see... I knew Clay Aiken before he was on American Idol. But then again, everybody else in Raleigh claims to now.

I've met Stephen Lynch a few times too. Great, genuine guy and funny as hell.

My aunt painted some murals in the house of some wrestler who's name I can't remember at the moment and invited me to go see them (murals) with the permission of of his wife (who was, if it matters to anybody, one of the nitro girls). Apparently however, the wife failed to mention this to her husband. I drive up and park next to my aunt's van and get out and start looking for her. Up comes this huge guy holding a bat. I just about jumped back into my car and hauled ass out of there. But my legs seemed to have their own agenda, which was apparently stand as rigidly as possible until the big man with the probable weapon reaches you. So he gets to me, asks me what I'm doing here, and apparently my voice was steady enough that he understood and, if gruffly, was really nice and took me to find her. The other thing that really got me about them was that they were complete, if you'll excuse my terminology, jesus freaks.

The only time I ever met somebody who was already famous and didn't immediately realize it was on my way home from San Antonio. This guy was at the curb of the airport having some problems getting his luggage out of the trunk of the car, so I walked over and helped him. He thanked me and when he finally turned towards me I realized he was Bruce Willis. I talked to him for a while about how much of a pain in the ass flying is getting to be and then, for fear of seeming like every other person that meets him, I didn't ask him for an autograph. Instead I said it was great talking to him, and went inside to catch my plane. Of course, without that autograph, not a single one of my friends will buy that I met him... Oh well.

thecoldone33 12-22-2004 02:15 PM

My family has met alot of famous people. Will smith, Montell Jordan, and even Michael Jackson (before we got all wierd, so this was around 1985)

Me personally
Cobi Jones (soccer star)
Black Eyed Peas
Sinbad

I know im missing some but my mind is blank right now.

keyshawn 12-22-2004 02:33 PM

my list doesn't seem too impressive, though I'm still pretty young :D

carlos boozer/jay williams/some other guy from duke: after a basketball game @ mich univ.
, willing to give their autograph, chatted with them for a min or two.

Lead vocalist of dirt [don't know his name] - came by the movie theater I work at.

bob taft ohio gov. - meh, he's okay.
O'conner - the former Lt. governor,

all of them were pretty nice and amicable. Some of my classmates right now will eventually be famous [at least locally] or maybe even me :P

jay-g 12-23-2004 01:47 AM

Walter Payton-he was at his son's soccer touranment in Wheeling, IL
Dan Patrick- talk to him at O'hare International

bendsley 12-23-2004 07:10 AM

Jerry Rice: he was taking his son to Oklahoma for college, and stopped into a best buy I was shopping in.

Jim Clark: CO-FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, MyCFO; CO-FOUNDER, NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS CORP. AND HEALTHEON/WEB MD CORPORATION. He also founded Silicon Graphics. I know him personally. He's a good guy, and we go out for coffee/food when I go to San Francisco.

Tucker Max

Larry Page/Sergey Brin (if you don't know who they are, look them up on Google Search)

Larry Ellison: Saw him at a starbucks in San Jose, and spoke with him for about 20 minutes.

Michael Dell: Went to visit a friend who works for Dell in Round Rock, and he came up behind us in the Starbucks line in one of the buildings on campus. He was wearing a hawaiian shirt and shorts with flip flops. I guess when you own the company, you do pretty much whatever the hell you want to.

Paul S. Otellini: I met him when I was at a Networld/Interop conference.

Linus Torvalds: met him at a linux conference when Transmeta came onto the scene and he's even an orkut friend

eyeronic 12-24-2004 11:27 AM

Used to chat with Wally Shawn frequently. He's a great guy.

Also, living in NYC, I see celebs a lot. Saw J-Lo and Ralph Feines in Central Park filming "Chamber Maid" which became "Maid in NY." Saw Sean Combs a month ago. Ralph Lauren was funny to see on the street because he's about 4'11". Anyway there's many many more (Gael Garcia Bernal at the NYC premiere of Y Tu Mama Tambien was cool too).

stevie667 12-24-2004 11:35 AM

Served Robert Winston a couple of times at work, damned nice bloke.

flat5 12-25-2004 04:24 AM

I've met and played with some famous (and some who SHOULD be) jazz musicians.

When I was 15-17 (1963-1965) I played lots of parties in Bel Air & Berverly Hills but did not know or care who I was playing for :-) The piano player (Betty Boop's son) in that band is now 'executive in charge of music for Universal Pictures' and has been for quite some time. Guess he's famous in some circles. Harry Garfield. We got the first job by way of The Rifleman's son, Johnny Crawford, who I never met.

Paradise Lost 12-25-2004 12:46 PM

Nothing ever seems to happy to me when it comes to famous people, or even remotely famous people. But, my Aunt was once lab partners with Jerry Seinfeld; her brother was friends with Alec Baldwin.

My Dad sat next to the daughter of one of the members of the Mama's and the Papa's, on a flight home from Dallas, TX (I was on the flight too, but stuck in coach.) Not sure who though.

Don't know if this counts, but a former Pro Football player lives our town and is an assistant coach to our High School Football team. I forget the guy's name, but he played for the Oakland Raiders. (How he ended up in NE Ohio is a mystery to me.)

And my friends got to meet a bunch of celebrities in early October when they were going around the country registering voters (or getting them to register.) My friends even got Deidrich Bader to do some queer "promo," I guess you would say, for one of their home movies. Kinda weird, but cool!

raeanna74 12-25-2004 03:55 PM

Shook hands with and actually spoke with Robert Steiner and Owen Gromme both artists who won Master Wildlife Artist of the year and their works were used on the Duck Stamps for the years they won. My mother purchased a print of one of Owen Gromme's works and he signed it for her personally. I was just a kid but I thought that was SO COOL.

Also Kevin Hermening, one of the Iranian hostages back in the 80's spoke at my high school graduation. There were only 3 of us students graduating that year (homeschool group graduation) and so we got to spend some time just actually talking to him. He mostly spoke about how the experience of being imprisoned was and how amazing a feeling it was to be free. He talked about being led out in the blindfolds and not even realizing he was going to be released. It was even a shock to be released. I digress. It was something I'll never forget to get to talk to someone who was a part of world history while I was growing up. My kid someday will say "What was the Iran-Contra affair?" I'll know, possibly better than some because I spoke to a part of that history.

As for celebrities? I'm not that interested. People who are movers and makers in our world - those are the ones I'm interested in meeting or hearing about.

anleja 12-25-2004 07:08 PM

Paradise Lost, was it Bijou Phillips?
http://www.offscreen.it/gif/starlet/bijouphillips03.jpg

Reanna, that is pretty cool to have been able to chat with one of the Iran hostages. It's not everyday you get to speak with someone who was involved in something so historical.

I was like 2 feet away from John Glenn in the basement area of the Capitol. This was during my trip to D.C. for Close-Up in, I think, 1996, so before he went back into space. Met Spencer Abraham, as he was a senator of Michigan at the time, before becoming Bush's Energy Secretary. Shook Al Gore's hand a couple months ago at a church he was visiting.

Hmm... any musicans I've met are not exactly big stars... Johnette Napolitano and everyone else from Concrete Blonde, Chris Randall from Sister Machine Gun, Kimya Dawson from The Moldy Peaches, all of the Verve Pipe, all of the Von Bondies.

Oh, I also met Buster Mathis Jr, who you may know as the guy who got his ass whooped by Mike Tyson in 96. He came into the pizza place I was working to ask for directions to some mortgage place. This was after he won some settlement from his old manager or something.

Me and Kelly Curtis looked at each other. He's Pearl Jam's long-time manager.

Okay, I guess I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I'll stop.

Rdr4evr 12-25-2004 07:26 PM

I don't care for famous people, but a lot of rappers live close to me.....snoop use to live across the street about 7 years ago. Aside from him I've seen/met WC, Dre, Ice Cube, and maybe another one I can't remember. They also shot "the wash" about 5 minutes away from me, which had several rappers.

Strange Famous 01-09-2005 06:52 AM

Who is the most famous person you've ever met/talked to?

I've talked to Mandy Moore on AIM and in AIM chats - before "A Walk To Remmber" and her career took off, but the most famous person I have ever met in person is probably Kieron Dyer (England soccer international, not sure if it counts, because I went to school with him). I've also spoken to and got the autograph of Richie Richardson (West Indies cricket legend) but not sure that that counts, had a drink in a pub with Iwan Roberts (Walsh international soccer player) and been ten pin bowling in the next lane to Craig Forrest (RIP) - who used to be Canada soccer teams goalkeeper.

In England, Kieron Dyer is more famous than Mandy Moore, I guess in the rest of the world probably the opposite!

I hope there is no other thread like this, I couldnt find one!

Bo Jackson
Charles Barkley
Pat Sullivan
Chris Morris
Chuck and Wesley Person
Frank Thomas
Tim Hudson

Also, Victoria Jackson (taught her to play the ukelele)
The Commodores
Mac McAnaly

Probably more, but I always draw a blank when asked this question.

My [ersonal favorites because they are the leaders of my favorite ROCK band: the Davies Brothers Ray and Dave. Met them each on their solo tours though. Both very very nice men. After Dave's CLeveland concert back in '03, a group of us went to Denny's and lo and behold his band (Jim Lespesa, Jonathan Lea, and Derek) came in so we all sat together and had a great evening.

While in Phoenix met with and talked to Alice Cooper, actually played golf with him, extremely nice man, very funny.

Met a very big rock star, a good friend of mine was sponsored in AA by him. He is very religious about AA and if you meet him in that capacity that IS the only way you meet him, not as a rock star. In fact he will get pissed if you talk anything but AA in that capacity.

Attended some of the same meetings in Phoenix as several other stars but anonymity rules.

Grew up in Lexington Ohio with Mid-Ohio Race Car Course practically in my backyard. Kiwanis worked the gates and such, and as my father was a member I was able to work the gates also, so I met a lot of big name CART racers, Bobby Rahal, Rick Mears, etc. Also a couple actors Newman, Redford, Letterman.

I also have met golfers as in the 90's before my parents divorce my dad was doing the excavating work on golf courses. My 2 favorites were John Daly, can be an ass, but nice guy, and the late Payne Stewart, dad worked with him on a few jobs.

tecoyah 01-09-2005 03:25 PM

Also have many famous musician friends who come by from time to time for a bbq or to shoot the shit or jam. Whatever the day dictates. Not dropping names though.

Lady Margaret Thatcher at a dinner in London. Shes getting on a bit for sure but just being in presence of someone who has accomplished so much was sobering to say the least. Ok so shes probably not a generally accepted 'famous person' but I still consider it an achievement.

Has to be Angelina Jolie, we met at a desertic beach in Bay Islands Honduras, she was wearing this sexy yellow bikini, when she saw me she strated crawling towards me, the lust just showed in her eyes... wait! No, that was my last night dream, never mind...

She most certainly is famous. Along with Reagan, she was hugely influential in the Cold War and the promulgulation of what later became known as "Reaganomics".

When you "accomplished so much", I hope you mean totally fucked up Britian though, right? :)

In bootcamp in Chicago, me and some buddies went to Ditka's and met Richard Kline, Larry from Three's Company. He bought us a drink. Later that evening I didn't meet but saw, Melanie Griffin, Don Johnson, and Mike Ditka.

Back when W was still governor of Texas he came to a town meeting and I got a chance to go up for a meet and greet with him.

Stone Cold Steve Austin threw some beer on me. It was purely accidental but he looked right at me after he did it. I was like three feet from him.

Maynard James Keenan, Trent Reznor, Ted Nugent, Ashley Judd, Benicio Del Toro, Steve McNair, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, and I think that's it.

Oksana Baiul (the ice skater)- She came into my store and I helped her, she didnt buy anything tho, Hillary Clinton gave a speech at my school...I didnt actually meet her tho just saw her from afar. If any of you have heard of the band "Rooney" I met all but one of the guys in it, it was pretty cool. Oh, and when I was in 7th grade, we took a trip to the museum of natural history and some kids said they saw Tim Allen, and when they asked for his autograph, he was not very nice about it.

So I've really only met 1 famous person. hehe :)

bad jane 01-11-2005 01:58 AM

matt damon and ben affleck tie for most famous. gwyneth paltrow was standing there but i didn't actually talk with her. also met kevin smith.

the person i had the most contact with is woody harrelson, i attended a few yoga classes he was teaching several years ago. he was really nice, really touchy feely, but a nice guy. though he did get pissy with some guy who was trying to take photos.

i've seen quite a few famous people in person, but as a general rule i don't approach them.

The astronomer Carl Sagan. While I was a student at Cornell, I had walked into a dining hall right after some big science meeting was wrapping up there. I ran right into Carl Sagan at the salad bar and just had to strike up a conversation. The guy was just brilliant and amazing; I only spoke to him for a few minutes, but I was in awe.

Walking through airport at LAX international terminal....no one around but a grungy, dirty guy leaning against the windows near the counters...As I get closer, I see a beat up guitar case. As I get about 5 feet from him, it clicks....I say, "Hey Neil, I love your stuff" and keep walking...he replies, "Thanks man!"

Neil freakin' Young, baby!

loonatic8her 01-11-2005 08:40 AM

Ok you guys may believe this or not....

Sometime like late November 1992 I dropped my Wifes parents off at the Atlanta Airport, they were going to Aruba for a Cruise. I waited at the gate with them when they boarded the plane I headed back down the isle to go back to my car. Well there was this couple walking in front of me, the girl was carrying a hand held baby seat/basket thing. She bent over to put the baby down and check on it and when she did I could see her panties... so naturally I looked... well her husband/boyfriend saw me checking her out and I caught his face... then a HUGE dude walking beside him gave me the Evil Eye so I walked on... the husband dude had stringy dirty blondish hair and he looked familiar... so I looked back... He looked me in the eye and gave me a little nod... then it hit me.. It was Curt Cobain... His videos were all over MTV and I recognized him... I smiled... he smiled... I decided not to be the typical fan and go ask for a autograph...

In retrospect I realized that the girl was Courtney and the big dude must have been a body guard or somethin.... I wish I had gotten an autograph now that he is dead... but I still remember that like it was yesterday... I was actually in the same place looking at the "god" of new music...

Stompy 01-11-2005 10:17 AM

Hahaha did he give you an evil look when he caught you checkin her out, or did he not seem too concerned with it?

Good story!

Heh - I saw Val Kilmer on a Southwest Flight once - he was in front of me in line. He was dressed pretty raggedy and had a big old scraggly beard. No one could believe he was flying Southwest.

Also saw a couple of the Baldwin bros in LA, but thats nothin :-)

Whenever my dad used to go Ottawa he always hit the bars with Kieffer Sutherland. Hasn't done that for years now.

vorpal_rabbit 01-13-2005 10:04 PM

If you go to Dragon*Con, you'll meet/see all sorts of famous people. Ahhh, conventions... is there nothing you can't do?

hognose 01-21-2005 11:15 PM

David Faustino - Married With Children - On an elevator in Vegas not long after the show ended. He had some big ass bodygaurds with him. For some reason I just get a kick out of this one....I think it's the pop culture ....

Craig T Nelson - On the set of Fire Next Time (I think that was the name of the made for tv crap). Either he was much taller or I am much shorter than I thought.

Carrie Ann Moss - On the set of Suspect Zero - I was "Paramedic #1" or some other non descript extra (Did it for fun).

Aaron Eckhardt - Set of Suspect Zero - Seemed waaay into his craft (kudos to him) but he pretty much freaked out all the fellow non descripts.

Chris Eyre - Director of Smoke Signals - At the Taos Talking Pictures Festival. Drank quite a bit of Mezcal with him. Amazing time, and an incredibly nice person, it was great seeing someone really enjoying the success of doing something he loved. Hopefully he still has that passion for his work. BTW, watch Smoke signals if you haven't seen it yet.

Val Kilmer - At a Lucky Dube concert in Santa Fe - Had backstage passes but we didn't want to bug him.

Francis Ford Coppola - At one of his places in Belize - (Blancaneaux) - Amazing place - you MUST go! I stayed away from him as everyone there said he was an ass. If you go, be sure to take the hike down to one of the lower waterfalls and "enjoy" yourselves in one of the pools.....a wonderful place.

For various reasons these are the ones that stand out in my mind.

I used to work in a restaurant in Vancouver that would get lots of celebs, and I've served a few. Most of the Canucks, at one time or another, tons of basketball players from when we had the Grizzlies, and Keri Russell gave me a dirty look one day when I asked her name, but the coolest person I've ever served was Jimmy Paige, in town for a Paige and Plant concert. And I spent about 2 hours playing the dumbest horse-racing game ever in Caesar's Palace with Grant Fuhr.

Hardknock 01-22-2005 07:02 PM

I saw James Cameron at work about 6 months ago. He didn't like his coffee and the seat he sat in was too small. Either he was in a bad mood or he's pretty much an ass.

sailor 01-22-2005 10:51 PM

Ive eaten lunch with Ken Lewis, CEO of Bank of America.

I was passed on my bike by George Hincapie, one of Lance Armstrong's main riders on US Postal/Discovery.

Thats really about it. Nothing too exciting.

FngKestrel 01-22-2005 11:08 PM

Saw Stephen Seagal at a Dalai Lama event. He autographed my dad's program, used the pen to autograph a bunch of other people's programs, then autographed my dad's program a second time, not realizing that he had already autographed it. Saw the Dalai Lama too, obviously.

eyeronic 01-22-2005 11:46 PM

Oscar de la Renta came to my work and signed an autograph for me and one for my girlfriend at the time. I am not too into women's fasion though so it's not super impressive to me.

Oropher 01-23-2005 05:56 AM

I once saw Michael Jackson, many years ago. Lots of bodyguards.

Drewzy 01-23-2005 06:51 AM

I met Patrick Swayze, hockey great Bobby Clarke, I also ran into David Lee Roth of Van Halen fame on the streets of Vancouver. I was astounded at how short Patrick Swayze is, but he and his wife are nice down to earth people.

I knew I'd forget somebody. I met Vincent Price over 20 years ago when he was a visiting lecturer at my university. At the lecture, he told the most marvelous story about "House of Wax," and I still chuckle when I think about it.

--- for those who haven't seen "House of Wax," it's a story about a guy (Vincent Price) who rebuilds a burned-down wax museum by kidnapping people and dipping them into a vat of hot wax and using them as the display figures. At the end, Price meets his fate and makes the obligatory fall into his own vat of hot wax while still ALIVE---

One evening in NYC, he walked past a retrospective theater that was showing "House of Wax" and he decided to go in and watch. He figured it had been years since he'd seen it on the big screen, and thought it would be fun. So, he bought his ticket and slipped quietly into his seat after the movie had already started.

Vincent Price said that as he watched the film, it became obvious that the two young girls sitting directly in front of him had never seen the movie before. He delighted in watching their reactions throughout the film (screams, jumps, breathless questions back and forth, etc.). Then, as the movie ended and the credits began to roll, one of the girls turned to the other and asked, "Do you think he's really dead?"

Of course, you KNOW what he did. He leaned forward, grabbed each girl by the shoulder, and said, "DON'T COUNT ON IT, BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!"

I would love to have seen that.

I used to wait on Peter Benchly (author of Jaws) every Thursday at a restaraunt called the Alchemist & Barrister in Princeton NJ. He ordered a turkey club on wheat toast an ice tea and a tomato juice every time. He was a pretty down to earth guy, very friendly.

Averett 01-27-2005 10:52 AM

That's such an awesome story, warrreagl. Vincent Price is awesome, I would have peed my pants if he grabbed my shoulders like that!
