Bobby Fischer Found!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,125926,00.html

Quote:
TOKYO — Former world chess (search) champion Bobby Fischer (search), wanted since 1992 for playing a tournament in Yugoslavia despite U.N. sanctions, has been detained in Japan, clearing the way for his extradition to the United States.

Fischer was stopped at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Tuesday as he tried to go to the Philippines, an airport official said on condition of anonymity.

Miyoko Watai, a Japan Chess Association official who described herself as a longtime friend of Fischer's, said the eccentric chess prodigy discovered when he was detained that the United States had revoked his passport.

Watai, who said she had spoken with Fischer since his detention, added that he was told he would be extradited but that he would appeal.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it knew Fischer had been detained but refused further comment, citing privacy concerns.

Fischer became a Cold War hero in 1972 when he defeated Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union to become the first American world chess champion. But the chess prodigy, long know for his eccentric ways, stunned the chess world by refusing to play again, and had slipped mysteriously in and out of public view in the years since.

He forfeited the title in 1975, and resurfaced for a dramatic rematch against Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992, beating him 10-5 to win $3.35 million.

U.S. authorities accused him of violating U.N. sanctions imposed against Yugoslavia for provoking warfare in neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Fischer, indicted by a grand jury in 1992, managed to elude authorities and left a tantalizing trail that included radio broadcasts from the Philippines and sightings in Japan.

The Athens-based World Chess Federation had no comment about Fischer's arrest.

"The international federation has had no connection with Mr. Fischer since 1975, so officially we are not in a position to say something about this," said Giorgos Mastrokoukos, the federation's public relations director.

In radio interviews, Fischer praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying America should be "wiped out," and described Jews as "thieving, lying bastards." His mother was Jewish.

Fischer, now 61 years old, became grandmaster at age 15.

He announced that he had abandoned chess in 1996 and launched a new version, "Fischerandom," a computerized shuffler that randomly distributes chess pieces on the back row of the chess board at the start of each game.

Fischer claimed it would bring the fun back into the game and rid it of cheats.

I never heard this side of the story before. I didn't realize the government was after him or that he hated the US.

I have a friend who thinks he played against Bobby a few years back. When he was missing, a player appeared on some online chess games, and "people who know what they're talking about when it comes to chess" say that the style of play was very much Bobby

Bizarre, never knew Bobby has such a negative view of the U.S..

Once upon a time...

He cracked badly under the strain.

He was something of a prima donna to start with, and the ludicrious "my chess dick is bigger than your chess dick" competition between the USSR and the US was a final straw.

I don't blame him, I would have lost it too, I reckon. All the crap that went on on both sides.

You all laugh now, but hopefully this will send a message to all those rogue chessplayers out there.

I for one am glad that I no longer have to worry about unrully chess players sneaking up behind me in a dark alley. They always have that one guy that comes at you two steps forward, one step left, while another will try to cut you off diagonally. It'll be that last guy who comes at you straight on that you should worry about the most. Checkmate.

Fischer was always very eccsentric and rude, his anti-american views didnt start until he got indicted from disobeying a direct order from the US Department of the Treasury that he should not violate the embargo. This is also when he began expressing his anti-semetic views too..

In themans defence though, The guy believes that everybody is out to get him and that everybody is stealing from him (especially jews)... he is a paranoid delusional at the least if not a paranoid schitzophrenic.....

here is a website that has all has all his radio interviews and alot of his personal correspondence of his over the last 12 years, from what i understand this site is ran by fischer by proxy thru a friend. If you read some of his letters (especially the ones to the executor of his sisters will) you will notice he is slightly off kilter... and if you take the time to read all of them (like i did), I think you will see he is not a healthy person.

There was an embargo against Yugoslavia (for thier role in the bosnia war crimes) imposed by the UN in 1992. The United States government (and therefore all of its citizens) agreed to abide by this embargo. The US Dept. of the Treasury sent Fischer a cease and desist order not to engage in commercial activity with Yugoslavia (the order specifically listed the chess tournament as the economic activity). He played anyways. His playing may not cause much harm, but if they allow one person to break the embargo, more will, and then whats to keep microsoft from opening a semiconductor plant there? An embargo if enforced is an effective form of political persuasion that is often used in lieu of war, his activities undermined these efforts and were in direct violation of an executive order (which has the effect of law).

hmm you really want to see the US invest money in making sure a crazy guy whose talent's the government exploited for years goes to jail for playing chess 12 years ago when we told him not to? it just seems like huge waste of federal money to me.

we didn't waste much time or money finding him, we flagged his passport, he went through a airport checkpoint and the japanese captured him and we are flying him back.. we've known where he is almost all of the last 12 years, but we havent bothered to waste the time or energy to find him, we just waited for him to fuck up...

but i suppose violent crimes should be the only punishable crimes.. lets start ignoring monopolies, insider trading, death threats, writing hot checks, deadbeat dads not paying child support, forgery, hacking etc... hey nobody is dying so lets just ignore it...

he is an american citizen, he was ordered not to play the chess match, he had no business playing it. No citizen should be allowed to undermine the diplomatic efforts of his country, the money his chess match generated quite possibly went to finance the genocide and mass rape which occured in the bosnia war.

putting this through trial will be very expensive, if he got jail time it would be even more expensive. but i think that's unlikly, it seem that mr fischer is somewhat mentally unstable and i doubt they could convict him considering this fact.

I'm in favor of all enforcement of laws, it's not the lawmen who are to interpret the law just enforce it. It's the judiciary branch that should interpret it and possibly change it.

Great thread. Embargo violation is an interesting crime. I feel like it's not fair that my government tells me I can't go to Cuba. They are making the decision for all of us based on politics. They are right to be displeased with Cuba and other countries, but I hate feeling like my country is my mom and I'm 7 years old and there are certain friends I'm not allowed to play with.

With regards to Bobby Fischer, he is really a hard man to love. I respect his achievements and he is one of my favorite chess players of all time, but his outspoken antisemitism is VERY offputting. He leaves me very conflicted and is an amazingly challenging and fascinating individual.

I feel he payed his dues to the US gov.

I think the US also wanted him for tax evasion for the game they told him not to play.

I don't know about "until" he hurts someone. Assuming he would that is. Waiting "until" he hurts someone is stupid. Then whats the point? Sure he's drinking a lot and he has to drive home but lets not do anything "until" he hurts someone. That doesn't do any good. If he's not all there it's best to supervise him so he not only could possibly hurt someone else..but himself as well. Again assuming that he actually would hurt. Been plenty of guys I've known who weren't all there who wouldn't hurt a fly. I of course don't like his anti-semite remarks but words only hurt if you let them.
