What makes you feel old?

I've become an old man. I complain and complain, OFFICIALLY, not just griping but official complaints logged with the New York City government

I woke up in the middle of the night.

I can't go back to sleep because the park is illuminated at night so that people can play baseball, football, soccer, etc.

I just called the NYC parks department to file a complaint that they haven't turned off since last night.

Since the city has instituted a 311 services number where one can call and file a complaint for ANY city provided service, I call it pretty regularly, about things like this, the MTA buses being off schedule (if you aren't going to be ON schedule then why have one?) people parking illegally around our building, people parking near the park and doing drugs, fornicating, and hanging out in their cars.

I just realized that this kind of activity while it's not a bad thing for me to do makes me feel like crotchety old man.

edit: fixed spelling errors.

WarWagon 05-23-2004 01:30 AM

Hearing the symphony of joints and bones cracking whenever I move more than 3 inches at a time. That, and having bags under my eyes so big I could have Gucci tattooed across them.

Hrothgar 05-23-2004 02:05 AM

Running 2 miles and then groaning and complaining like an 80 year old the next day.

metalgeek 05-23-2004 02:12 AM

thinking I'm gonna be 30 by the time I'm done schooling...
(runs away form people in rockers)

Nisses 05-23-2004 03:39 AM

nothing! bwahahaha :D

Peetster 05-23-2004 03:53 AM

Listening to the cicadas is making me feel very old.

The last time I heard them I was 27.

The next time they will arrive my son will be 33.

izzzzy 05-23-2004 03:59 AM

my banker lady told me that on my next birthday i get free banking privelidges.

eribrav 05-23-2004 04:12 AM

Somehow in the last few years, the checkout girls at the grocery store all started calling me Sir. They also haven't asked for ID for alcohol purchases in years. Seems like only yesterday we were the same age and I was trying to flirt with them; now I'm a "Sir".

veruca 05-23-2004 04:42 AM

going to my friend's children's birthday parties makes me feel old...somehow everyone i know got married and had kids and i never noticed...and when my friend's little sisters and brothers graduated high school...when i met them, they were in kindergarten

yabobo 05-23-2004 04:44 AM

I am old.
My back is in really bad shape. I have "dickdo"
I drive to my neighbors house.
MILF's look like school children!
I have my funeral prepaid for.

clockworkgreen 05-23-2004 05:44 AM

Nothing physical yet, aside a few random grey hairs. But the thought of being 30 in a few years isn't helping.

ARTelevision 05-23-2004 06:19 AM

Nothing.
I never feel old.
I always feel exactly like me.

ngdawg 05-23-2004 06:46 AM

It's little things that catch one off-guard. Hearing yourself bitch and moan about something of no real significance; going to the drugstore to buy ointments that you used to find in your parent's medicine cabinet(and then discussing those same ointments WITH your parents); seeing some young hardbody flaunting it and the first thought you have is "slut"; hearing a loud noise emminate from you neck as you turn to hear the person next to you a little clearer; looking in the mirror and wondering what the HELL happened? "I'm too young to be this old!" and, saving up, not for retirement, but for plastic surgery!

Jolt 05-23-2004 07:00 AM

the hair on my head is thinning and appearing in new unwelcome places such as my ears...arrgh!

Kvetching or grumbling about something...and -realizing- that you're doing it...is an awful feeling.

maleficent 05-23-2004 07:10 AM

Gray Hair, too many of them, my colorist can't keep up... it was cute at age 24, it's not cute at my age.

Being called Ma'am by 20 somethings.

Being offered a seat on the bus by a 20 something. (Yes, good manners I know, but I'm not THAT old)

Realizing that I am technically old enough to be a mother to those same 20 somethings.

Britney Spears? :eyeroll:

Child! Try 40 in a few months.

I have never considered lying about my age, but 39A is having a lovely ring to it.

Harshaw 05-23-2004 10:42 AM

I got black socks from my friend for christmas... and they were the best gift ever.
10 years ago*, I probably would have punched any "friend" who gave me black socks as a gift.

*Oh and this one that I just realized... 10 years ago I was in my mid-teens.

05-23-2004 11:34 AM

"old" is a relative term, but I do not care for booming sound systems, I drive cautiously, and feel so differently about teenage behaviour now. Of course I am 25 now, and I am married with a child.
I have no expecations or too much excitement for my birthday or holidays anymore.

maleficent 05-23-2004 11:37 AM

The "oldies" station plays the music I listened to in high school, and still listen to today most of the time.

I swore this would never ever happen, but get together with friends, and someone the talk turns to health. What are we comparing notes?

Everything old's new again, the clothes that I wore in high school, are back in the stores. Again.

isis 05-23-2004 11:59 AM

the fact that i'm 18 and i enjoy gardening.

i grow my own pumpkins. my friends made fun of me for that last night.

maleficent 05-23-2004 12:02 PM

OK. ya know what makes me feel really old? Reading posts from 20 somethings about what makes them feel old. Gonna hafta beat y'all with my cane. :D

:heading back to my rocking chair now, now where did I put my teeth?:

Oddly enough that makes me feel young :D

KungFuGuy 05-23-2004 09:33 PM

my knees aching way to much.

of course i'm 21 and abused them quite a bit through rollerblading (jumping down stairs is bad for knees) and freestyle skiing. and just being stupid and jumping off of lots buildings. (like one-two story ones...i was trying to be a stunt man!)

i seriously want some hydrolic knees, terminator style. then i could jump off high buildings :)

i also feel old when i don't get checked for id at the alcohol purchases....because i'm only 21! do i look that old already? :(

what makes me feel really old though is paying bills and trying to set up financial future for my mom and juggle trying to figure out how to pay for college at the same time. trying to take care of someone else does wonders for making one feel old.

World's King 05-23-2004 09:37 PM

What makes me feel old?

Most of the girls in porn today.

Fremen 05-23-2004 10:02 PM

Most rap music makes me feel old.

Karby 05-23-2004 10:07 PM

knowing i was born in the early eighties...
*i can hear my joints creaking already :(*

rockzilla 05-23-2004 10:24 PM

It seems I use the terms 'Kids these days' or 'Those damn kids' way more than I should.

Bobaphat 05-23-2004 10:40 PM

Watching Mtv makes me feel old

mystmarimatt 05-24-2004 12:19 AM

Being 19 and already losing my hair. Fuck.

That, and, my mom is a teacher, and hanging around her 8 and 9-year-old students for too long, i get worn out.

CinnamonGirl 05-24-2004 02:10 AM

Having grey hair certainly doesn't help--although I've had a few strands since I was 13 or so (yeesh!)

The other day I caught myself thinking "you call that music?!"

Polyphobic 05-24-2004 06:32 AM

Nothing. I'm 29 and have the maturity level of an infant.
At least this explains why my 10 month old son and I play so well together. :D

LOL working here, when the interns come in for the summer... each year they look younger and younger and younger.

MXL 05-24-2004 07:42 AM

When I go to the liquor store, the sign says you must be born before (Todays date), 1985. There is no way they are old enough, right? I was in high school when they were born, and that wasn't that long ago.

Rubyee 05-24-2004 07:45 AM

When I bend my knees, they creak. They could probably provide the sound effects for doors in horror movies.

Also, I cry at Disney movies. I shouldn't be doing this till menopause, or at least post-partem.

I am sleepy by 10:30 on Friday nights. I know it is just because I work early all week and don't get enough sleep, but it still makes me feel old.

Sometimes, I clip coupons.

Empty_One 05-24-2004 08:10 AM

Well, I noticed it's harder to get going in the morning after a night of drinking. I used to be able to bounce back and never feel a thing. Now, I don't want to move untill atleast noon.

Music makes me feel old, both listening to today's pop music, and realizing that I've been listening to bands like Perl Jam and Nirvana for 15 years.

Also, looking for what passes for 18 in the TB makes me feel old also.

StephenSa 05-24-2004 09:46 AM

Teen age girls stopped looking at me a long time ago.

I never have any idea who's on the radio unless its an "oldies station"

People of legal drinking age could be my children.

Sometimes passing up sex because I'm tired and want to go to sleep!

H12 05-24-2004 10:10 AM

I eat Raisen Bran...and lots of it.

I just graduated from my high school Friday night, and when it showed a picture of me as a kid on our slideshow, I felt really old, even though I'm not even gonna be 19 until another two months pass.

My back bothers me alot, but I'm pretty sure it's hereditary (sp?) 'cuz my mom's always had a bad back too. Of course, I'm sure playing football didn't help it much these past few years.

When my bones pop like someone biting into a Rice Crispy treat, that definately makes me feel old.

Edit: forgot to mention WHAT I played that might contribute to a bad back...my bad.

laconic1 05-24-2004 10:21 AM

My gray hair makes me feel old.
Also, my insurance company called me the other day to let me know that after my birthday in July my car rates will drop dramatically because I won't be in the young, high-risk age bracket anymore.
