The thing that makes me feel oldest is music. Listening to groups I loved in high school and noone having any idea who they are or asking "how old is this CD/tape?". Or listening to the music today and thinking how my father must have compared his 60's music to my 80's. (Of course in the 80's we respected the 60's almost as much as the 80's music.) Today, kids have no idea who the Byrds were, or who Mr. Mister was.

My youngest sister graduated last night. Next year it will be my little brother and it will make me cry.

dirtyrascal7 06-05-2004 11:11 PM

walking by high school girls and feeling guilty for looking.

not being able to drink hard for over two nights in a row.

giving advice to people younger than me and having them look up to me.

scansinboy 06-10-2004 12:13 AM

Reading this damn thread makes me feel old. I agree with some of them, especially the one about seeing the first playboy playmate who's younger than you, but it's how young you want to feel, not how old you feel. Granted, I don't have any grey hairs yet, but I think I'm aging quite slowly.
I'm gonna go start another thread on Tilted Portraits called Guess how old I am?

I have a birthday in three weeks, let's see how close you are...

buffto 06-10-2004 01:02 PM

being all of 19 years old, not a whole lot makes me feel old. Every so often my knees hurt after a few games of bolwing, though.

EruptiveDreamz 06-11-2004 06:34 AM

I don't know man, I don't have time to feel my age. What does make me feel old is when I stop and look at how old my kids are and in trying to tell a story about something that may have happened in life and recaculating how many years actually passed between that time and present. 20 years? I have been out of school for that damn long ! Sheesh... Ancient history 101

Redgirl 06-11-2004 07:30 AM

Just a couple of weeks ago my friends dragged me to a club to go dancing. I was yawning by 11, just when it was getting crowded. The fucking music was so loud my ears rang for 3 goddamn days (yes, really!). These asshats spilled their beer all over the dance floor and I got a towel to mop it up, muttering to myself about stupid drunk kids the whole time and feeling like their parents.
I'm 28, but I have an old soul.

And the best has been my 2 younger cousins, they are 19 and 20, married with babies. WTF?! I remember when they were born! Clearly!! I remember holding them as babies, gagging while trying to change their diapers. Spinning them around by their hands in the front yard when they were 5 and 6 and I was a teenager and they thought I was soooo cool. And they have fucking children!! I don't even have children!

Sorry, got a little carried away there... *sigh*

Stompy 06-11-2004 09:21 AM

I'm only 23 and I feel old.

Some older folks might be thinking, "You're goddamn crazy..", but I think of it this way:

The past 5 years has gone by incredibly fast. I remember 1999, and everything in between, like it was just yesterday.

I only have that time period x 10 before I'm dead or close to it. The thing is... life gets faster as you get old. An hour would (in theory) seem like an eternity to a newborn baby. It would only make sense for days/weeks/months, even years.. to just flow together to a much older person.

Not fun at all. I can't cope with the fact that everything dies. I just can't fathom not existing anymore.

TNJ4555 06-11-2004 01:56 PM

Finally being able to negotiate a night with buds from college.
Where do we end up? Strip club? West Village? Anywhere in the city?
Nope...In a diner on Rt 3 eating all the greasy food our wives & doctors won't lets us even think about.

ophelia783 04-25-2005 10:38 AM

I'm older than the famine in Ethiopia.
And Elmo.

Ouch. This one really got to me.

The last time I got my prescription eyeglasses (2 years ago), the optometrist suggested that I might consider getting bifocals. I'm due...

Grasshopper Green 04-25-2005 01:14 PM

I already am dying my hair to cover up the greys....
My husbands sister has a baby...when we first met she was still in elementary school...
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing the clothes in the juniors section...
I rarely get ID'd anymore when I buy liquor...

Having my daughter's boyfriend call me Sir.

The realization that this year's highschool graduates were born in 1987.

Damn!
I could deal with losing hair- it just meant I had more testosterone than most people, right?!

Kids- everyone is having them. Heck, kids have kids alot younger than us. Just different life choices, right.

Visiting a church though, and realizing that Sunday school classes are still organized by decades, and that we're not in the youngest er.. younger adult class kinda sucks.

Pip 04-26-2005 04:42 AM

Watching soccer and hearing the commentators call someone "a seasoned player" "a veteran" "the nestor of the team" or stuff like that, and realise they are younger than you.
When I say "a few years ago" I mean 1994.

sashime76 04-26-2005 05:26 AM

Seeing local high school kids with "Class of 2007, 2008...." jerseys, jackes makes me feel old, I was in the class of '85. That's a long time ago... :D :D :D

Disk_Pusher 04-26-2005 05:28 AM

Being pregnant makes me feel old. Having to make the choice to abort or not with my fiancee is the most sobering thing one can go through, I believe.

I'm going to be a mommy, and my grandmother is becoming a great-grandmother. I feel older than dinosaur bones, and it's not helped by the shuffling walk, problems bending over, and inability to run to the bus I'm missing (again!).

Also, playing and still enjoying Master of Orion II makes me feel really old... and then whinning about how MoO 3 just "wasn't the same".

I'm such a geezer.

Everything old's new again, the clothes that I wore in high school, are back in the stores. Again.

Nick at Nite? How about television before cable tv, before remote controls, before color tv even.

When I was a wee evil queen, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family and a few other moldie oldies from Nick at Nite were on Primetime...

What makes me feel old? Realizing that people who were born after I graduated from high school, are considered adults...

Now, add to all of that the fact that the last time we went to the Strategic Air and Space Museum, the military uniform, of the type that I wore, was on display. Try getting through that unscathed.

amonkie 04-26-2005 06:14 AM

Being the RA for an Grad student dorm where I was the youngest person in the hall, 13 of my 37 residents were over the age of 35, and yet I was the most mature one there. Scary.

Meditrina 04-26-2005 06:33 AM

Certain music, watching my nieces drive (they were 3 when I met them) and graduate from high school, and looking at my grey hairs all make me feel old. Trying to convince myself that age is just a number and trying to do things to make me feel good about myself seem to be helping, so far.

rhaevyn 04-26-2005 07:36 AM

I'm only 19, but I do feel old when I realized that my nephew is starting to turn into a "big boy," i.e. not wanting to be so affectionate as he used to be.

Also, when younger people call me "ma'am." That's really odd.

Asuka{eve} 04-26-2005 11:32 AM

Im under 20 yet I feel old when I go to the movie theater on friday nights. There are just so many middle school kids who think they rule the world. To think that I used to be like that.

Right! Me too! And that I have sciatica. SCIATICA!!! I'm 26!!!!!! I am too young to feel this old. Once I got out of college and realized that I was pretty much older than anyone IN college... that made me feel old, to realize I was now an adult. I know it's silly... *sigh*

Elphaba 04-26-2005 12:42 PM

I feel old when Mal is complaining about being 15 years younger than me. :)

bendsley 04-26-2005 12:46 PM

I remember being able to stay up all night my freshman/sophomore years of college. I would go over to hang out at the girls dorm with friends and we would be up until 4am, with 8am classes. I had no problem doing that.

Now, however, I feel tired if I'm not in bed by 11pm. I can't sleep late in the mornings, as I'm usually up by 9am anyway.

I don't generally feel old (at 36), except for a couple of things. First, when I'm talking to a younger person and I have to explain who the Talking Heads are. Second, when I see mention of some group like Maroon 5, and have absolutely no idea what they sound like. I wanted to keep up with this sort of thing, but radio in Connecticut died, and it isn't really worth my time to look for it.

IC3 04-26-2005 01:12 PM

My friends..Which isn't a bad thing.

The average age of my friends (Both Genders) is about 20-21..I'm going on 27. I live like i'm 20 and still feel like it.

I still get carded at the beer store...I love it.

Ever have a kid ask you what a Smurf is? That's a reality check I wasn't prepared for.

meembo 04-27-2005 04:45 AM

I used to be a teacher. Some of those kids now introduce me to their kids.

My son kicking my ass in just about every sport :)

Two words -- beer belly

having the music I grew up with now on the "old-time" radio stations

I have to say that I enjoy almost all of getting older. I'm extraordinarily blessed, and I'm grateful for just about everything that's come my way.

In general, kids keep me young. I've got lots of neices and nephews, and they put the biggest smiles on my faces.

In my new place of employment... I am the oldest guy in the office. I took me a while to figure out why I was getting treated so well, then I realized they were just giving respect to their elder...

I am only partly kidding about this...

Squishor 04-27-2005 06:13 AM

It just boggles my mind that there are people born in the 80s who now qualify as fully grown adults.

These same people have never known a time without rap music, never dialed a phone, and think there is such a thing as "old school" personal computers and video games.

It makes me feel old (and horrified) when I see people wearing leg warmers == and recycling the worst pop music of the 80s. I think they must have forgotten how bad it was the first time around, then I realize they might not necessarily even remember those days.

Generally, though, I don't feel old. While I'm still bouncing around acting silly and going to concerts, other people people my age are going grey, dragging around kids, and fighting the battle of the bulge. In a lot of ways I pretty much live the lifestyle of a 20-something so I'm not complaining. :D

1. first grey hairs
2. when your kids think the music you like sucks.

cellophanedeity 05-12-2005 04:17 PM

I don't feel old at all. I'm still a baby. Being eighteen will do that to you.

Knowing that there's stuff in my closet that is older than you are...

Young whippersnapper :D

boom29 05-12-2005 04:24 PM

Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but:

Going to bed early (before midnight), especially if its a weekend.

Falling asleep while watching primetime TV.

kramus 05-12-2005 04:34 PM

Nubile girls are children. If she doesn't have lines around her eyes she's eyecandy. The most completely attractive women now, I find, often have kids old enough to get themselves off to school, or drive, or sometimes even have children of their own :(
