OK, now Soda's out of the question.....

OOPS- this probably should be moved to Health.

Studies have come to a conclusion that drinking too much soda can lead to cancer........

Esophageal disease could be connected to carbonated beverages

Updated: 12:19 p.m. ET May 18, 2004WASHINGTON - Carbonated drinks may raise the risk of esophageal cancer, a usually fatal disease, researchers reported on Monday.

Several studies presented at a meeting of cancer and gastrointestinal experts in New Orleans showed that what people eat and drink could affect a range of cancers.

“This research supports the widespread medical recommendations for healthy eating,” said Dr. Lee Kaplan of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Rise in esophageal cancer
A team at Tata Memorial Hospital in India found a strong correlation between the rise in per capita consumption of carbonated soft drinks in the past 50 years and a documented increase in rates of esophageal cancer in the United States.

Team members studied U.S. Department of Agriculture data to find that per capita consumption of carbonated drinks rose by more than 450 percent, from 10.8 gallons (49 litres) on average in 1946 to 49.2 gallons (224 litres) in 2000.

And over the past 25 years, the incidence rates of esophageal cancer have risen by more than 570 percent in white American men. Esophageal cancer affected 13,900 U.S. men and women in 2003 -- more than 10,000 men -- and killed almost all of them, according to the American Cancer Society.

The number of esophageal cancer cases clearly followed the rise in intake of carbonated soft drinks, the researchers found.

That could be coincidence, but they also found research that showed a possible biological basis for the effect. Carbonated soft drinks cause the stomach to distend, which in turn causes the gastric reflux associated with esophageal cancer.

The researchers found similar trends worldwide. Countries with per capita annual consumption of more than 20 gallons of fizzy soft drinks also had rising rates of esophageal cancer.

“The surprisingly strong correlation demonstrates the impact of diet patterns on health trends,” Dr. Mohandas Mallath, who led the study, said in a statement.

Caffeine benefits
But another study showed a potential benefit from drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages.

A team at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease studied people with a high risk of liver problems and found those who drank more caffeine had fewer liver abnormalities.

They surveyed 5,944 adults at high risk for liver damage because of heavy drinking, hepatitis infection, iron overload or obesity.

The more coffee they drank, the more likely they were to have normal liver function, the researchers found.

“These results warrant further study,” said Dr. James Everhart, who helped lead the study.

Haven't had a soda in years, but I probably drink a 1/2 gallon of coffee a day - glad to see there's a benefit to it.

Cancer isn't so bad compared to morbid obesity. Which by the way, is the funniest word ever.

Morbidly obese. *giggle*

So what's the secret then? Drink beer? Any proof that beer is bad for you?

Yay to soda *finishes 3rd dr. pepper today.* I'll take this "study" with a grain of salt. I'm sure there's some study that say not drinking soda causes disease X and drinking soda prevents disease Y. Drinking soda while doing jumping jacks causes disease Z and shrinks your nads. You can't win. Drink and eat what you want. You only live once.

I think its funny how this report includes almost no useful information on the research methods or results. The intro is also misleading because it makes it seem as if there is causation somewhere in this research when there is not. I mean seriously, all these guys have found is that esophogeal cancer rates have risen and soda intake has risen as well and they get funded for this stuff. I am beginning to feel sad about where cancer research is going.

This just in: Being alive greatly increases your risk of cancer.

I'd rather be eaten alive by my own mutated cells than by something like Alzheimer's. People need to stop being so paranoid and uptight about what's going to give them cancer. What's the point in living your life if you run away form what makes it enjoyable?

If you want to reduce your risk of cancer, go live in a bubble. Then I'll point and laugh as your plastic bubble outgasses carcinogenic fumes.

I saw that article and just laughed. Of course, drinking too much of something with a lot of chemicals in it will cause cancer.

I don't think the study necessarily related the right cause and effect. It simply states that as soda consumption increased, so did cancer. Americans have been exposed to so much more than just soda in the past couple of decades, so the increased risk of cancer could have come from anywhere - not just soda.

I feel that the risk of becoming obese is much greater than cancer from drinking too much soda. And more dangerous as well.
Also, genetics plays such a large role in your lifespan that drinking a ew too many cans of pop won't make a noticable difference. I hear stories of 110 year old men who smoked for 60 years and drink to this day, and of 60 year old health addicts dying of stroke or cardiac arrest.
Enjoy your coke. Try not to drink more than 5 a day (I would try to stick with 1). Take things in moderation- they will have more value individually and collectively when supped, or used.

So what about if we mix alcohol with our soda? Then we get the benefits of the alcohol to counteract the harm of the soda, right? Nothing but rum-cokes for me from now on!

Listening to the news about "the shocking finds of what is in the water you drink!!"

If there's so much bad shit in our "drinking" water... I'll take my chances with coke.

Hopefully all the chemicals that are gonna kill us, will kill all the little critters in the water they use to make the soda with?
