America - Land of the Free...

This made me laugh and laugh.

Quote:
Ban for low-rider jeans sought
From correspondents in Miami, Florida
May 12, 2004

AMERICAN singer Britney Spears may have to rethink her wardrobe before visiting her home state of Louisiana after it said is was considering new legislation to outlaw low cut jeans.

The proposed bill on denims that reveal underwear or too much skin was approved by the state's House Criminal Justice Committee last week.

Low-rider jeans are the choice of young females and Britney.

It threatens to outlaw wearing clothing in public that intentionally exposes undergarments or "any portion of the pubic hair, cleft of the buttock or genitals".

Violators would be required to carry out three days of community service at a local fire station and pay a fine of up to $US175 ($252).

The bill is due to go before the full Louisiana legislature sometime during the current session, which ends June 21.

Local councillor Glenn Green, a staunch supporter of the bill, told the committee last week that teenagers' fashions had gone so far that legislation was needed to bring them back within the bounds of decency.

"I don't relish seeing the beginning of the crease of people's buttocks," local press reports quoted Green as saying. "And I don't enjoy watching young men letting their sexual organs show through their red or black silk underwear."

The US is a strange place. Wonderful and inspiring in so many ways, yet altogether laughable and scary in others.

f*** that. I wear them all of the time, because they are the best-fitting and most-comfortable.
What next?

So I take it he's gonna outlaw overweight plumbers?

And I also assume that - due to his detailed description - he prefers to look at young men's sexual organs in blue silk underwear?

Here in Eugene you're likely to find naked people walking around come summer time downtown. And at the Oregon Country Fair... more naked people than I could count.

It takes a little getting used to... I wish it wasn't so shocking.

My first thought was that the plumber's are gonna be pissed. I found this on google.

http://www.realstupidnews.com/cheeky_louisana.html

The bill, aimed at teens who mimic the low-riding pants of pop music stars like Nelly and Britney Spears, has already had some unforeseen consequences, beginning with a lawsuit by the Plumber's Union (PU) Local 327.

"Butt crack exposure is a non-negotiable issue for our members," explained PU shop steward Dirk Valley. "It's an integral part of who we are as plumbers. You might as well ask cocktail waitresses to cover their cleavage. Or Kirk Douglas to cover his cleft chin."

Snow or not, its still damn cold there to someone who's spent their whole life in the Sonoran Desert.... I'm used to summer highs around 115F and winter lows around 35F. Although I'm sick of the heat, I can't take the cold.

That's absurd.

I believe that a government, in no way, should be able to decide what I can and can not wear. If I wanted to wear a shirt that said "fuck Lousiana and it's government" I would wear it. If they have a problem with that, tough.

As far as the decency thing goes, I believe this nation is way too uptight about nudity and such. I think people should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want, including nothing.

Agreed. It's far too easy for the media to jump on a bill that someone proposes and make a national scandal about it - having everyone foaming at the mouth screaming that the government won't stop them from wearing low cut pants.

Obviously the bill will never pass - but someone thought it was worth bringing the attention to the matter. That said, there's no need to rant about how the US restricts your freedoms when (a) nothing has been done, (b) it's just one state and would very quickly be overruled as unConstitutional

There was a really funny piece about this last night on 'The Daily Show'. And I've never understood why we have to wear clothing in public. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of people I DO NOT want to see naked, and I would never go in public naked myself, but if someone doesn't want to wear clothes they should have every right not to.

I'm not really sure I understand this comment, but if you mean that America owes all its liberties (if you will) to the "blood of countless others", then that's complete nonesense.

Yes, there was a revolution. But after than, the US has legislated for most of its laws. The US, unlike most countries in Europe, have never had to fight to defend their homeland or repel invaders. That's a good thing (before anyone starts accusing me of anti-Americanism).*

It wasn't a cheap shot. It was a joke. I was going to include a "unless you want to show your knickers" in the body of the post but I thought (justifiably as it turned out) that most people would see the pun and not react inappropriately.

Understood.
I reacted more to the general direction the thread was taking.

The easy bashing of a great country with a great history of securing (not simply legislating) human freedom is not funny to me when it becomes such a common habit.

There's a fine line between public lewdness and being fashionable. It is up to the legislators (sometimes unfortunately), to decide where that line is. How many people in Louisiana, a deep south, very conservative state, are opposed to this bill? Not nearly as many as you might think, I'd bet. If the federal government tried to pass this kind of law, that'd be one thing, but for a state to say "The majority of our representatives, representing the majority of the people in their district, find this to be public lewdness" is well within their rights. If people in that state are truly opposed to it, they will voice that and have the bill defeated.
