America - Land of the Free...
This made me laugh and laugh.

The US is a strange place. Wonderful and inspiring in so many ways, yet altogether laughable and scary in others. Mr Mephisto |
Lol...that's pretty pathetic. I can't believe that they are actually being serious about this.
|
Some standard of public decency is reasonable.

Land of the Free!*

to quote the BareNaked Ladies "It's all been done"
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=54910 it was ridiculus then and still is. |

back to the original post. They might as well propose a bill that ban old people from wearing tacky clothes...jeeze... |
f*** that. I wear them all of the time, because they are the best-fitting and most-comfortable.
What next? Pretty soon we will be little hamsters on the wheel. If that happens, I'll move. |

For some reason the mass burning of Beatle records in mid 60's Georgia just popped into my mind.

I think I will call this
"Mandatory Eduction of National and State Equal Symbiosis" |

And I also assume that - due to his detailed description - he prefers to look at young men's sexual organs in blue silk underwear?:D |
Here in Eugene you're likely to find naked people walking around come summer time downtown. And at the Oregon Country Fair... more naked people than I could count.
It takes a little getting used to... I wish it wasn't so shocking. |
Why would one complain about seeing too many panties etc due to low cut jeans? Weird.
|
wouldn't it make more sense if they tell the companies that made these pants to stop making them...?
|
Hmm.. isn't Mardi Gras in Louisiana? Are they going to arrest every girl down there?
Doesn't matter. This bill won't pass.. |
offended= write a law
Good lord! It should be "Land of the almost free" |
My first thought was that the plumber's are gonna be pissed. I found this on google.
http://www.realstupidnews.com/cheeky_louisana.html The bill, aimed at teens who mimic the low-riding pants of pop music stars like Nelly and Britney Spears, has already had some unforeseen consequences, beginning with a lawsuit by the Plumber's Union (PU) Local 327. "Butt crack exposure is a non-negotiable issue for our members," explained PU shop steward Dirk Valley. "It's an integral part of who we are as plumbers. You might as well ask cocktail waitresses to cover their cleavage. Or Kirk Douglas to cover his cleft chin." |
land of the free ... hmmm ... it's not as bad as declaring the value of Pi to be 4, but it sounds a bit stupid.
reminds me of the Frank Zappa comment interviewer: Mr Zappa, do you believe we can ever be free? FZ: well, at least we can be cheap! |
|
I wish it wasn't so damn snowy in Canada. I'd so be moving there tomorrow if I could handle the weather there.

As always, it's easy to criticize a country where all the extensive precious freedoms we do possess have been secured by the blood of countless others.

Fair enough!

That's absurd.
I believe that a government, in no way, should be able to decide what I can and can not wear. If I wanted to wear a shirt that said "fuck Lousiana and it's government" I would wear it. If they have a problem with that, tough. As far as the decency thing goes, I believe this nation is way too uptight about nudity and such. I think people should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want, including nothing. |

Obviously the bill will never pass - but someone thought it was worth bringing the attention to the matter. That said, there's no need to rant about how the US restricts your freedoms when (a) nothing has been done, (b) it's just one state and would very quickly be overruled as unConstitutional |
I don't like the fit of low-rise jeans, I won't wear them. But then again I (despite my weightloss) still wear granny-panies. *shrugs* not that it really matters, This law doesn't effect me.
|
There was a really funny piece about this last night on 'The Daily Show'. And I've never understood why we have to wear clothing in public. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of people I DO NOT want to see naked, and I would never go in public naked myself, but if someone doesn't want to wear clothes they should have every right not to.

*sigh* It's the corporations that rule - not the government :D
They can't go after the corporations, so they go after the people. |

Yes, there was a revolution. But after than, the US has legislated for most of its laws. The US, unlike most countries in Europe, have never had to fight to defend their homeland or repel invaders. That's a good thing (before anyone starts accusing me of anti-Americanism).* Quote:
Mr Mephisto * I am not anti-American. Far far from it. But I'm unashamedly anti-Bush. |
Understood.
I reacted more to the general direction the thread was taking. The easy bashing of a great country with a great history of securing (not simply legislating) human freedom is not funny to me when it becomes such a common habit. |
There's a fine line between public lewdness and being fashionable. It is up to the legislators (sometimes unfortunately), to decide where that line is. How many people in Louisiana, a deep south, very conservative state, are opposed to this bill? Not nearly as many as you might think, I'd bet. If the federal government tried to pass this kind of law, that'd be one thing, but for a state to say "The majority of our representatives, representing the majority of the people in their district, find this to be public lewdness" is well within their rights. If people in that state are truly opposed to it, they will voice that and have the bill defeated.
