retail advice
I bought a pair of jeans from the Gap. About 3.5 weeks later, as I was getting into my dad's truck, the crotch split open. There is a rip about 3 inches long in the middle of the fabric, not on the seam. My point of view is that there must have been a flaw in the fabric to allow a sudden tear like that to develop when I hadn't been wearing them for that long. There is hardly any wear on the seams and cuffs. I mean, jeans are supposed to last a while, right? My question is this: If I took them back to the store (with no receipt) do you think I'd get an exchange or at least partial credit? They were $50 after all, so I am pretty disappointed.

If you get a reasonably responsive person who has an eye on customer service, they'll probably replace them. They're "GAP" brand jeans, right? It's not like they could have come from somewhere else.
It should be obvious from the wear on them that they're not years old. And three-week-old jeans aren't supposed to split like that! |

A credit card charge, payment, anything of the such is just as good as a receipt.
Pants simply shouldnt rip that soon, so yeah unless you abuse the hell out of them they are defective. Just dont be a jerk if they dont return it. Rude customers are what make people hate thier jobs.

GAP policy (If i remember correctly) is exchanges or store credit without a receipt. But, I don't know how long they're return policy goes for. They should know you didn't buy them long ago, the pants should still be on the shelf. That shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, and be nice. I have found that Sales clerks are much more responsive and willing to take things back when you treat them with respect. Most of them, even though they have policies, treat each encounter differently, depending on the customers attitude.

You can return them for a store credit. They give you a little card. Or you can swap 'em out for another pair of jeans. If you wish to do so.
But my best advice is to not shop at the Gap.

I think everyone above me knew more than I did, but generally, that's how it goes anywhere.
How did you pay? If you paid with credit/debit or check, you can show them that, but I am sure they will give you store credit- no refund. Just don't blame them, they just sell the stuff. Remember to always hold onto receipts. |

You bought them 3.5 weeks ago so its a sure thing that they would have a pair that is identical still in stock. Calling the store and talking to someone there might work. But I think because you dont have the bill for them your best bet might be to go into the store and see if you can recognize the sales person that rang in your purchase. You could also ask to speak to the manager in person as well. I m sure those would be a sure fire way to either get a credit or another item of the same cost. I m almost 100% positive that they would not give you a cash refund because they have no idea what method of payment you used, and most stores have the policy that if you use credit card or bank card they need to refund to them.
There are other ways of going about it to but they usually come as last resorts. One would be raising a stink in front of the store but if you are anything like me that would be a little embarassing. The last is to go higher up to the head office and call them. Thats ONLY done if they are not willing to do anything at the store for you. I have saved myself a couple thousand bucks just by bitching my way through things that I dont agree with.

I hadn't thought of the debit card record - I'll have to hunt it up, but that should help. I would even settle for partial credit, it isn't really worth making a big stink over. I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what happens.
