Playboy...clean?

Due to the popularity of magazine's like Maxim and Stuff, Playboy is planning changes from format and color, to less nudity.

Yes, less nudity.

Questions:

Do you currently read Playboy?

Would you read it with more content and less photos??

How can there possibly be less nudity? There's only 10 pages to look at now. The death of Playboy is near.

Playboy went out in my teens.. Its too highbrow and pretentious for me. If I want current events I'll read FT, and Economist, If I want articles that pertain to me, Playboy ain't it.

Now I'm a loaded man. Although to be fair thats died a bit since the early issues.

Damn, I'll be buying "Home & Country" soon.... or worse IMHO GQ

The only Playboys I look at are in my late father-in-law's collection (he had every one from the first one until his death in 1986). It's interesting to note the changes in allowable nudity over those thirty years.

Can anybody explain the changes? Have there been court cases to justify the changes?

I have a subscription to Playboy..... except it was some promotional offer for $10, I usually just flip through it looking at all the neat junk and reading a few things.... it's pretty boring, I won't resubscribe. My favorite Girlie magazine is FOX.... Mmmmm, FOX

I rarely read Playboy any more. There isn't one thing I can point too either.

Sad, since I grew up Heff and killed many a kitten looking at his creation.

Yes, I subscribe to playboy. I get a 12 month subscription for $12. Even if it is mostly ads, at this price, why not??? I do enjoy many of the pictorials, and contrary to most girls beliefs... I *DO* read it mostly for the articles. If I want porn, I go to TFP.

Playboy is about useless. They are always repeating the same soapbox articles about weed, guns, and such. Their idea of an attractive woman seems to be a silicone stuffed, blonde, white girl. In the year I had a subsrciption that's almost all I saw. I was actually offended at the lack of variety and the implied racism in their refusal to show ethnic women. I think that magazine needs some serious help, and Maxim, FHM, and Details have a HUGE head start on what men want to read. I can't see Playboy coming back.

The only reason to buy that near waste of paper is when they do manage to get some star naked on camera. Otherwise, they are useless.

I think it's too bad the execs at playboy don't get to read discussion like this. Here we are trashing their mag, free of charge. Later playboy is going to be paying to do research to answer the question asked by this thread.

Funny isn't it?

I got a year's free sub to PB last year.
I opened the first one and flipped through it and stopped at nothing.
I never opened 'em after that and just gave em to people.

in college, I used to read it cover to cover.
It's either me or the mag that has changed.

I remember the time like 4 or 5 years ago when I'd read it, and look at the porn, but I've moved on to bigger and better things. It's supposed to be a "high class" mans magazine according to one of my teachers a few years back. Dunno about that. Just a waste now.

I think Playboy's biggest selling point is the fact that they get celebrities to get naked. I just kind of wait around for the hot famous/quasi-famous girls to show up. The other ones are definitely hot, but nothing to get hugely excited about. I think they're making a mistake.

His daughter pretty much runs the company now... I think reducing the amount of nudity is a bad move. The only reason the other mags are doing that much better is because they are targeting a younger market -- one that can purchase their magazine before their 18th birthday...Playboy just needs to reevaluate their marketing campaign.

My idea of a great looking woman and hefner's idea of a great looking woman are two different things.

He likes the big titted phonies with BIG, no ENORMOUS fucking hair everywhere. Big hair, big hairspray soaked big hair, with wet lips, slightly pursed or that female video vixen look. Glassy blue eyes, and the same old poses over and over and over again.

blech.

Take anna nicole smith. She was hef's wet dream at one time. And the female wrestlers with the big fake tits. I had a subscription once, and after the 3'rd profile of "Sable" in 12 months, i dropped it like a lead ballon.

That and the idiotic profile, "What kind of man reads playboy" with these goofie looking idiots in polo shirts and golf carts with fat blonds on their arms.

Yech.

I like the nice clean look of some of the women on the tilted formum, slim, natural tits, not a ton of makeup, maybe laying on an old couch, or out in a field.

Hardly professional.

To the best of my knowledge, this has nothing to do with legal issues, decency or morality. As in most cases, it's money.

Maxim, Stuff and FHM are doing quite well. As many of these posts indicate, Playboy has slowly lost the interest of many men. If you check out the most recent issue (with the Joe Millionaire woman on the cover), the graphics look very much like Maxim.

They won't be going totally clean and they won't be covering up the women to the point of Maxim's bikini pics, but they're just going to focus a lot more energy on stories, interviews, in-depth articles....etc.

There was probably only three ways to go.

1--Nothing changes. Obviously, the result is...nothing changes.

2--Go more hardcore. It appeals to the hardcore audience, but then you compete with Hustler, Penthouse, Club (go ahead and name your favorite)

3--Clean up a bit. It's a slightly broader audience. Many people can't make the leap to actual nudity and either their wife, girlfriend, mom or someone else doesn't give them grief for buying a magazine like Maxim. I guess Playboy is going for a piece of that audience.

Time...and the bottom line will tell.

Yeah, it seems pretty sad now, but that shouldn't take away from all of the interesting stuff that Hef did with the magazine (and the organization) in the 60s and 70s.

I've been reading/looking at Playboy for years. That was one of the biggest things for me when I turned 18 I could buy my own Playboy mags and not have to look at my buddies issues (that he stole from his Dad) I've had a subscription for a long time but I let it run out a couple of years ago. They just don't talk to me anymore. The fiction is still pretty good but not much else. The women are as beautiful as they come but even that can't keep me paying for Playboy anymore.

Why not do a combination of number one, but still have better articles, interviews, and cleaning up of their editorial staff?

I used to read the mag religiously. I think what they stood for in the 90's was right on: Men's rights, Father's rights, relaxation of drug laws, anti-censorship articles, and interviewing stars.

At some point along the line, they changed a little, got a little more politically correct, and used more air-brushing than I have ever seen.

To fix themselves, they have to do three things:

Get better looking, more girl next door type of woman, who aren't afraid to go infront of the camera with no airbrushing. Not more hardcore, just more classically beautiful women.

Better articles, about men's issues. Go back to having interesting, sexy short stories by famous authors, and interview people who really matter, not Joe Sitcom.

Figure out who you are as a magazine. Your market is not those under 18, so don't act like it. Find a better balance between young and hip, and old and stuffy, you can't be both.

I had a subscription in college. It was entertaining, pissed off the right people, and I enjoyed that my girlfriend (now my wife) liked it too.

I gave it up only a couple years ago, when I realized that I'm now older than their target audience, and that magazine was less and less relevant to me.

I think there was ony one really attention-getting pictorial, and that was Jenny McCarthy's original appearance. THAT was something. Apart from that, ennnh.

No, I never much cared for playboy... as far as the nudity, if I want softcore Hegre Archives is a much better investment.. if I want articles I'll stick with Maxim for humor and "man" stuff, IEEE Spectrum for Tech stuff and BBC.com for news/politics.

I doubt the magazine will lose any ground by reducing the nudity. They simply can't compete with the internet/lad mags anymore so they have to adopt a new format if they want to survive.

The problem with Playboy is their image problem. Guys know that it's totally softcore and tame while women are mostly oblivious to this fact and regard it as dirty porn. Because PC corporations share this view with women, some advertisers shy away from buying an ad and supermarkets refuse to carry the title. Maxim and FHM have filled this spot valliantly and is laughing all the way to the bank. To choose from the above, three options, now were very appealing but we'll see how well Playboy gets along with Option #1.

I saw warrrreagl post and was surprised by the fact that playboy ever really showed any spread shots. Even the couple that I have picked up in the last few years have been very tame. Barely more in MHO than Maxium and Stuff etc...
If they cut out what they already have very little of...why bother...call it quits...but then again isnt his daughter running the mag now? Could that be it? I get the two other mags mentioned here (Maxium and Stuff) for free thanks to the good old internet....playboy? why bother....I can find things that more directly stimulate me on the net rather than fake photshoped women that wouldnt exist on a perfect planet earth...and besides...I am not a big tit man anyways..

the only reason people like maxim, etc.. is because u can buy it with out being embarrased and its cheaper, and u dont have to be 18

the thing thats good about playboy is that it has nudity as well as all the articles that are usefull and interesting
