To the best of my knowledge, this has nothing to do with legal issues, decency or morality. As in most cases, it's money.
Maxim, Stuff and FHM are doing quite well. As many of these posts indicate, Playboy has slowly lost the interest of many men. If you check out the most recent issue (with the Joe Millionaire woman on the cover), the graphics look very much like Maxim.
They won't be going totally clean and they won't be covering up the women to the point of Maxim's bikini pics, but they're just going to focus a lot more energy on stories, interviews, in-depth articles....etc.
There was probably only three ways to go.
1--Nothing changes. Obviously, the result is...nothing changes.
2--Go more hardcore. It appeals to the hardcore audience, but then you compete with Hustler, Penthouse, Club (go ahead and name your favorite)
3--Clean up a bit. It's a slightly broader audience. Many people can't make the leap to actual nudity and either their wife, girlfriend, mom or someone else doesn't give them grief for buying a magazine like Maxim. I guess Playboy is going for a piece of that audience.
Time...and the bottom line will tell.
