Chix + flix <> mix. :(
I always enjoyed From Dusk Till Dawn. I didn't consider a particularly intelligent movie, but I did enjoy the action, the f/x, and the excellent camera work. Naturally, my wife was bored. So, a trailer for Kill Bill pt 1 comes on, and she quickly dismisses the whole thing. ...Okay. Not everyone likes Tarantino. Not everyone found Pulp Fiction to be not only funny as hell but also extremely well written and even intelligent. And I do enjoy a large variety of movies... And I would be willing to suffer through a couple of hours of the ugly-as-fuck Julia Roberts and her latest in a long series of tearjerkers, in exchange for being able to watch a movie like Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs or American Psycho without the bored remarks as to how unrealistic the movie is.
I don't enjoy going to the movies much by myself, and she'd be really offended if I suggested she not come with me. Does anyone else experience this?

My girlfirend is only interested in going to about 20% of the movies I want to go see. She is intelligent and probably the type of person who would get the movies... but she hates movies.
Try getting a group of people together for these movies and plan something like dinner or drinks after the movie. She may be intersted in going for the human interaction.

I recently watched Pulp Fiction for the first time. I gotta say, the movie is pretty interesting and quite funny at times, but I still don't see the point in it.

My GF is generally interested in films but has an irritating habit of falling asleep (on top of the usual asking plot-related questions the whole way through!). However, she did come to see Terminator 3 with me the other day so I shouldn't complain too much...

So far I've missed out on The Matrix sequel, the Tomb Raider sequel and Terminator 3 this summer...in exchange for Where The Red _something_ Grows, The Incredible Journey and Old Yeller. Not that I don't like animals, but I like violence a tad more.

Watch it again! There is not point, other than to enjoy it. As for watching films, you should go with a friend(s) who would be interested in seeing it. Inform your wife that she is welcome to come along if she wants to see it, but is not obligated. Same with her, if she wants to see that latest weepy, then encourage her to go see it with a friend. Tell her that if she can't find someone to go with, then you will accompany her. That's how I would handle a situation like this.

i'd don't appreciate most sci-fi movies, so my husband will wander off by himself once in a while to the theatre to see that genre of films. i have no problem with him doing so. most of the time we just rent dvds anyway.

Thankfully Ratbastid and I have pretty much the same taste in movies. We both despise the chick flick genre, and like offbeat indy films, "thinky" movies and sci fi. I will admit to watching the occasional film with Sandra Bullock in it, but Julia Roberts makes me want to retch.

I sorta know how you feel. I don't have a girlfriend stopping me, but my friends and I don't have the same taste in movies. I miss out on seeing a lot of movies I really want to see because of it. Then when we do want to see the same movies, they always want to wait until it's in the cheap theater.

My wife is pretty good about going to see my movies. Sometimes we go to see one of hers, and then she has to apologize about how bad it was. (Notting Off with Hugh Grant comes to mind). She did see Kill Bill and said it was bloody, but interesting enough to get her to watch the second half. She does refuse to watch the LOTR. We go pretty much every week.

Guess I'm pretty lucky. My wife and I usually agree on movies. She does tend to like the chick flicks a little too much for my taste and I like the indies more than she does. We both agree that movies are purely fro entertainment and should not be taken seriously which eliminates the "this is so unrealistic" debate.
We do not go the movies too often but rather watch HBO, etc. or rent DVDs. Keeps costs down and find watching them at home much more enjoyable.

Since I don't have a boyfriend I don't have to worry about such things
![]() I rent what movies I like, and I go to the movies alone. It took me awhile to do that, but now I kind of enjoy it. Last winter I was supposed to go see LOTR with a friend of mine but he flaked out on me. So I just went on my own. Then this summer I saw Seabiscut by myself. There's no harm in going alone ![]()

Trade off, one bad movie for her, one good movie for you, and so on and so forth. Compromise.
I guess I'm lucky that my girlfriend will see just about any movie...and if not, I will just go by myself. No big deal to me, its not like I need to talk to anyone during a movie at the theatres. |

At ten dollars a flick, I don't usually take risks when it comes to movies. Quadrette and I go to movies that we're already pretty sure we'll like. If it's a movie I don't want to see, she goes with her friends, and vice versa, and neither of us are offended.
A few years ago, she dragged me to see The Astronaut's Wife with Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp. It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in the theater. That was four years ago and I still haven't let her live it down. ![]()

No girlfriend, so I haven't had that problem as of late.
Though I did once date a girl who hated chic flicks. She also loved to read Tom Clancy books. So it was at least a month before "The Sum of All Fears" came out that she told me we were going to see it the weekend it hits theaters. Naturally I had no objections. I loved it, I never had to sit through a chic flick the entire time I dated her.

My gf is a VERY concrete person...she really has little imagination or abstract ability to decode symbolism. As a result she doesn't like a lot of the films I do since I am the opposite. E.g.: She hated Pi I loved it. We saw Kill Bill and she wasn't impressed and was quick to point out the inconsistencies in the story. She fell asleep during Matrix 2. She likes horror and suspense and anything with Niholas Cage so we do have chances to watch stuff together.

I hardly ever go to the movies.... unless its the free show for the kids. My wife and I like different types of movies... so I cant see paying 7.50 for one of us to sit through something that one of us dosen't like. We always wait to rent them. Last movie we saw togeather that wasn't a kid movie was.... ummmmmmmm X men. (she picked it) Its been awhile.

Spinach and i have the same taste in movies for the most part. Hopefully you two can find a common ground. It's hard to be with someone who doesn't enjoy the same things you do.
PS Yay to all the boys movies that have been metioned so far, althogh I don't view them as boy movies. American Psycho, kill bill, and the matrix (#1) are on my list of great films and also on my dvd To Buy list. |

What's up with all these women with no taste in movies? I loved the Matrix (1&2), practically worship at the altar of the LOTR movies, and Fight Club is one of my all time favorites. Pi was awesome. How can you compare ANY of these movies to something as insipid as, I dono, Bridget Jones' Diary, essentially a bad rewrite of Pride and Prejudice? They just don't know what they're missing. I think if they got past the marketing as boy movies they'd be pleasantly surprised.

me and my chick have a pretty good understanding about movies
we don't go very often (partly because of the long distance aspect, partly because i hate to waste $$ on bad movies) but when we do, it has to be funny or a really good movie (oscar worthy, but no chick flicks) i refuse to go to chick movies, she doesn't really like that sappy crap either, so we don't even rent them, if she want to see one, she rents it and watches it with her friends or whatever (i don't understand why couples have to watch all movies together, my roommates bitch gf does ) some movies i won't watch with my chick cause she won't get it, and i know she won't, cause i hate to answer questions by anyone during a movie , if you've been watching from the beginning and ask who is that everytime a new character comes in or why did he do that, even though nobody knows the answer yet in the movie i don't hesitate to make fun of the person for being a f'ing retard that can't figure things out themselves

Hardly any of my friends goto the theater, so I end up going with my dad. Only thing that keeps the family together is knowing that we gotta be on good terms when the next LOTR movie comes out or we'll both be going alone

i usually go to the movies by myself - i just prefer it... maybe because i find it easier to get swept up in a film if i´m alone. my uni is just across the road from a big movie complex... so i´m often over there checking out the latest movie in my breaks. as for girls who don´t like such movies as American Psycho, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction ... etc ... well, frankly thats a bit of a turn off.
