Eat more dogs!

Eat more dogs, Cambodians urged
Thu Sep 11, 5:14 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodians are being urged to eat more dogs as part of a crackdown on stray mutts wandering around the capital of the southeast Asian nation.

Although dogs, along with creepy-crawlies such as spiders, beetles and crickets, are found regularly on menus in deeply impoverished rural areas, eating them is frowned upon in the relative sophistication of Phnom Penh.

City governor Kep Chuktema says it is now time to draw up a special pooch policy to control the growing problem of pavement-fouling strays, and for city-dwellers to throw off their traditional snootiness towards dining on man's best friend.

"Come on, dog meat is so delicious," he was quoted as saying in Thursday's Cambodia Daily newspaper. "The Vietnamese and Koreans love to eat dog meat."

"(Cambodians) don't have wine, but poor people can enjoy their dog meat with palm juice wine," he said.

Hitherto, Phnom Penh dog lovers have had to keep their tastes under wraps by asking for 'special' or 'jogging cow' meat in restaurants.
Um. I'm just not quite sure what to say about this.

To add to what Ganguro said, horse meat is popular in some European countries.

So it is totally dependent on culture.

While I won't be heading to the local pound for a pound of Rover, if I were traveling overseas I might try it.

I bet you wouldnt even know you were eating dog... You'd be thinking "This is some mighty good steak you've got here!"

And they would giggle, knowing you just chowed down on Spot.

I don't know that I'm even against the idea, really; it just strikes me as a bit strange. I know it's only because we get closer emotionally to dogs in our society. *shrugs* I might give it a shot were I overseas.

Very well said, Ganguro. Somewhere right now, in another part of the world, someone is reading a forum about how we eat bacon and retching into their trash can.

We were actually having a local problem with some Asians (I think Hmong as that is the majority here) stealing dogs around the neighborhoods to eat. People were loosing dogs constantly. That was a few years back. Go ahead and eat the kind of meat you want to but DO not eat MY pet.

Here in Korea, there is the (in)famous dog soup, which I haven't tried and don't think I want to. A lot of older male Koreans will eat it because it is supposed to make you strong and better in the sack.

There is a specific breed of dog (couldn't tell you which) that is bred for consumption -- they are farmed the way Americans farm cows. They'd never cook a little poodle or something like that -- lots of people like to keep poodles and such as pets. There's also just not enough meat on most dogs to make it worthwhile...

Most of my ESL students are not fond of the whole dog-eating thing, but some like it.

As long is it isnt the dog youve had from a pup, and love, and cudle with....who cares? Meat is meat! My aunt had a cow that was more of a pet....It died...We didnt eat it.

There is a differance between munching on a pet and a food animal. But nothing says they cant be the same species.

I don't see pigs as adorable at all. The duck isn't all that great looking either. The baby lamb is kinda cute though.

I could never eat a dog. I would throw up if I ever found out after the fact. I just love 'em too much. I suppose I've just grown too attached to my culture.

If you ask anyone who has kept a pig/lamb as a pet, I'm sure that they will tell you exactly the same thing!

Are any of the animals you brought up in your argument used to help the blind, the handicapped, sniff out bombs, drugs, cadavers, protect homes, businesses, individuals, arson investigation, protect herds, fetch a stick, hunt with along with being a true friend of man a companion?

Oh, so because we have found a use for them, they are less deserving to die?
Yeah I guess that's an acceptable arguemnt.
How about we breed a useless breed of dog? Would it be okay for me to eat that?
