Eat more dogs, Cambodians urged
Thu Sep 11, 5:14 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodians are being urged to eat more dogs as part of a crackdown on stray mutts wandering around the capital of the southeast Asian nation.

Although dogs, along with creepy-crawlies such as spiders, beetles and crickets, are found regularly on menus in deeply impoverished rural areas, eating them is frowned upon in the relative sophistication of Phnom Penh.

City governor Kep Chuktema says it is now time to draw up a special pooch policy to control the growing problem of pavement-fouling strays, and for city-dwellers to throw off their traditional snootiness towards dining on man's best friend.

"Come on, dog meat is so delicious," he was quoted as saying in Thursday's Cambodia Daily newspaper. "The Vietnamese and Koreans love to eat dog meat."

"(Cambodians) don't have wine, but poor people can enjoy their dog meat with palm juice wine," he said.

Hitherto, Phnom Penh dog lovers have had to keep their tastes under wraps by asking for 'special' or 'jogging cow' meat in restaurants.
Um. I'm just not quite sure what to say about this. ;)

CrazySaturn 09-12-2003 07:20 AM

Dog, the other meat under the title of man's best friend?

MacGnG 09-12-2003 07:20 AM

eeeeewwwww

shalafi 09-12-2003 07:21 AM

Id like to try dog some time.

Holo 09-12-2003 07:36 AM

That should be on their Tourist Packet...

GET REAL HOT DOGS HERE!!!!

diff'rent strokes....

Ganguro 09-12-2003 07:41 AM

Different cultures, Different acceptablility.
Remember that when you are eating your hamburger, or pork chop.. that someone in another culture finds that disgusting.
Hopefully that will help certain people keep their hateful comments to themselves.

Lebell 09-12-2003 07:46 AM

To add to what Ganguro said, horse meat is popular in some European countries.

So it is totally dependent on culture.

While I won't be heading to the local pound for a pound of Rover, if I were traveling overseas I might try it.

Averett 09-12-2003 07:56 AM

I bet you wouldnt even know you were eating dog... You'd be thinking "This is some mighty good steak you've got here!"

And they would giggle, knowing you just chowed down on Spot.

*shudder*

Thraeryn 09-12-2003 08:01 AM

I don't know that I'm even against the idea, really; it just strikes me as a bit strange. I know it's only because we get closer emotionally to dogs in our society. *shrugs* I might give it a shot were I overseas.

1337haxor 09-12-2003 08:28 AM

My mom says dog tastes a little like lamb. I'm still waiting to get a chance to try it.

Ugh. If it tastes like lamb, I'll never touch it. Lamb is just disgusting.

Cynthetiq 09-12-2003 09:04 AM

see and lamb is something that other cultures eat daily...

not to mention ... whale...

Dano069 09-12-2003 09:11 AM

I've ate a dog before.

Oh, wait, you mean the four legged variety! No, haven't tried that yet. Don't think I will, at least, not knowingly.

Edited: Removed eatin'/replaced with ate. Didn't want you all to think I wasn't edumacated.

Plan9Senior 09-12-2003 10:05 AM

Cats and Dogs have it pretty damn good if you ask me. They were lucky when humans decided that they made good pets :).

bundy 09-13-2003 05:11 AM

the only dogs i could ever imagine eating, are small yappy dogs.

but sadly, i think they´d be the nasty, tasteless ones.

Very well said, Ganguro. Somewhere right now, in another part of the world, someone is reading a forum about how we eat bacon and retching into their trash can. :D

raeanna74 09-13-2003 07:06 AM

We were actually having a local problem with some Asians (I think Hmong as that is the majority here) stealing dogs around the neighborhoods to eat. People were loosing dogs constantly. That was a few years back. Go ahead and eat the kind of meat you want to but DO not eat MY pet.

splck 09-13-2003 07:52 AM

It doesn’t bother me at all if people want to eat dogs. They probably taste better than a lot of the shit food we have here.

bernadette 09-13-2003 08:22 AM

well, there won't ever be any Fido on my dinner plate!

no felines either. i don't care if it tastes like chicken or not.

Here in Korea, there is the (in)famous dog soup, which I haven't tried and don't think I want to. A lot of older male Koreans will eat it because it is supposed to make you strong and better in the sack.

There is a specific breed of dog (couldn't tell you which) that is bred for consumption -- they are farmed the way Americans farm cows. They'd never cook a little poodle or something like that -- lots of people like to keep poodles and such as pets. There's also just not enough meat on most dogs to make it worthwhile...

Most of my ESL students are not fond of the whole dog-eating thing, but some like it.

Oh god! I feel so guilty after laughing so damn hard at this post!

IC3 09-14-2003 03:40 PM

I want that Dog in the picture...Soo Adorable:D

laconic1 09-14-2003 09:20 PM

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Even if I was in a culture where eating dogs was normal I wouldn't be able to do it.

For the record, I would eat all of the above, including the dog.

krwlz 09-15-2003 04:37 PM

As long is it isnt the dog youve had from a pup, and love, and cudle with....who cares? Meat is meat! My aunt had a cow that was more of a pet....It died...We didnt eat it.

There is a differance between munching on a pet and a food animal. But nothing says they cant be the same species.

bundy 09-15-2003 05:26 PM

ok, so we´ve discussed dogs.

but would y´all eat a cat?

http://www.bootscooters.com/dancing_kittens2.jpg

Kllr Wolf 09-15-2003 05:42 PM

I see nothing wrong with eating of dog unless of course there was emotional attachments to said dog then I would have to have a pizza delivery or something

Batman976 09-15-2003 06:32 PM

I don't see pigs as adorable at all. The duck isn't all that great looking either. The baby lamb is kinda cute though.

I could never eat a dog. I would throw up if I ever found out after the fact. I just love 'em too much. I suppose I've just grown too attached to my culture.

dnd 09-16-2003 01:42 PM

Thats just sick in my opinion but then again cultures differ and so does cuisine within these cultures....and i guess if they do have a problem with stray dogs...just a thought, can u catch rabbies from eating a dog with rabies? huh...who knows...maybe a google is coming up!

I wouldn't eat those. Not enough meat on them I wouldn't imagine. I'd prolly eat my own cat...the big lazy fatass! :D

JBX 09-16-2003 02:01 PM

CSflim, sure all those critters are cute, but... I don't know, don't you think dogs have personalities?

If you ask anyone who has kept a pig/lamb as a pet, I'm sure that they will tell you exactly the same thing!

Are any of the animals you brought up in your argument used to help the blind, the handicapped, sniff out bombs, drugs, cadavers, protect homes, businesses, individuals, arson investigation, protect herds, fetch a stick, hunt with along with being a true friend of man a companion?

Oh, so because we have found a use for them, they are less deserving to die?
Yeah I guess that's an acceptable arguemnt.
How about we breed a useless breed of dog? Would it be okay for me to eat that?

filtherton 09-16-2003 05:35 PM

Yeah, eat a poodle. Stupid, useless poodle. We should fill vast expanses of farmland with poodles, pump 'em full of antibiotics and poodle growth hormone and then fry 'em up.

JBX 09-17-2003 11:46 AM

{sigh} CSflim, enjoy your fido burger.

Midnight_Son 09-17-2003 12:00 PM

well, if they've got too many dogs....and alot of hungry people....
what ever works I guess.

perhaps they could use a copy of this new asian cook book I just picked up, "101 ways to wok your dog"
