Who shows up in your dreams most often? I'm not talking about fantasies here... I mean actual dreams while you're sleeping. Is there a common "rotation" of people through your dreams, or places or times? If someone were studying your dream patterns, what would be the most noticeable thing?

For me, I dream a lot about my old home, the one that I lived in for my whole life (until I left for grad school) and which was torn down in 2006 when my mom sold it to developers. I have not been back to the property since that happened, so I don't have an image in my head of it being gone... in my mind, and I suppose most strongly in my subconscious, it's still there. All of my dreams that take place at "home," happen in that house, in that yard, and often even with my grandmother, who passed away in that house in 2005. Most of the time in my dreams, she's alive... but sometimes she's dead (sort of a ghostly figure, but not scary) or she's very sick, which is how she was the last time I saw her. These dreams are not disturbing... just memories.

I also dream about ktsp a lot (of course), and it's great when I dream about hot sex with him and then I wake up, and we go at it right away. But there are also some not very pleasant dreams with him, because it's often his "evil twin" showing up in my dream. I mean that the husband in my dreams is often the one enacting all of my worst fears (abandoning me, cheating on me, etc), and not at ALL like the one I'm married to in real life! Whenever I wake up from these dreams, I always snuggle immediately over to ktsp and curl up next to him, so relieved to know that *this* is the real one, and the dream quickly fades away.

Parents don't feature that regularly, although sometimes they do pop up. Various aunts tend to show up now and then, oddly. More often, I get these random people from my past, people I most definitely have not thought of consciously for years, sometimes longer. They were non-entities in my life even when we were in school together, etc... just people in other social circles, whom I never noticed. And yet sometimes they pop up. Of course, I get the occasional "ex" dream, which is always slightly odd (it used to happen a more, of course, when I wasn't married/cohabiting w/ktsp--they have pretty much stopped now)--and it seems I tend to dream about traveling in large groups of friends, with all of us on some kind of big trip going somewhere exotic. Those are usually the fun dreams.

Last night, I dreamed about going to Disneyland with ktsp, and I was so extremely happy to be there. It sounds so strange--cynic that I am--but I have always loved Disneyland, no matter how commercialized or brainwashing it is. I probably went there 10+ times as a kid and teenager. So I think it's kind of stuck in my brain as a "happy place" and it pops up in my dreams now and then.

Hmm, interesting. Ktsp says that he almost never remembers his dreams, either--though every few months he'll have a really vivid one, usually because it's traumatic in some way, and he'll tell me as soon as he wakes up. We woke up on our wedding anniversary this year, and he told me that he'd just dreamed about my "evil twin" cheating on him (and he never dreams about that kind of stuff!). We laughed for a while about that one.

For me, as soon as I gain consciousness after any kind of sleep (even a 15 minute nap), there will be quite clear pictures and feelings still hanging around from my dream. Usually, if ktsp is there, I'll tell him right away--you can imagine his joy every morning when I mumble through the latest wacko dream. I tend to have the craziest dreams when I take a nap in the afternoon, for whatever reason--my brain doesn't seem to like that, so it produces some very disjointed stuff.

Dreams are actually quite important to me... not because I think they mean anything beyond what's in my subconscious, but even that is fascinating. I can recognize when my body is going through a period of intense stress based on my dreams, if I'm not picking up on conscious signals during the day. I am not sure what I would do if I could no longer remember my dreams... until I starting spending nights with ktsp, I thought everyone had vivid, crazy dreams like I did!

I have horrible dreams about Crompsin a lot. Those are the dreams I remember the most vividly.

Most of my dreams have Crompsin and/or our cats in them, but lately a lot of my dreams have featured people from home in Ohio. My parents hardly ever show up in my dreams, but my friends feature prominently. I've had a few dreams lately about strange happenings in Disneyworld with my ex.. the trip to Disneyworld happened in real life, but things like riding elephants or having one of the teacups fly away with us definitely did NOT happen.

Sometimes I dream about my horses being able to talk to me.

Ha!! Yes, someone else dreaming about a Disney place! That makes me feel more normal, hehe.

Yeah, isn't it weird how you can dream about people who are in closest proximity (e.g. Crompsin for you), and those who are furthest away (people in Ohio)? For me, ktsp shows up all the time in my dreams, but otherwise I dream about whichever place I am NOT in at the time... in Iceland, I'll dream about my home and family in Seattle, but when I'm in Seattle or Pennsylvania, I'll often dream about Iceland and my family here. It's like my brain just wants to sort out the stuff going on closest to my heart (ktsp) and those who are geographically furthest away, and forget everyone in between. Weird.

Oh, I also started dreaming about TFP'ers in the last year or so, since being in Iceland (!)... no one person in particular, but sometimes you guys just show up (even if I don't know what you look like) and I know who you are. Odd.

I dream a lot about the house I grew up in. I haven't been in it in 13 years, but I've driven by it since then, and I know it's changed. They've obviously remodeled it. But in my dreams that house is still the same house.

I used to dream that I hadn't finished high school, that there was one last math class I had to take and couldn't pass (this was an obvious recreation of events in my current life having to do with university). This was a frequent dream. Once I finally graduated college and had my degree in my hands, these dreams stopped. I keep my high school diploma tucked behind my B.A. so that I know the truth.

In my dreams I have the power to open doors at a touch and lock them behind me as I pull them shut. I also seem to be able to make doors appear. Dreams where I'm being chased are common, but I like them. With my dream-powers, it becomes a game of hide-and-go-seek.

Sometimes I dream that my significant other is being an asshole. I usually wake up irritated with him. Good thinking on the "evil twin" thing. I might have to say that to myself next time it happens.

And I definitely dream about TFPers. I'd share some of them here, but I think that they might be too exciting for a general audience.

See, I find it interesting when patterns like these dominate for a while... due to whatever stresses are going on at the time, as you said. And then they fade away. Those kinds of dreams are easy to figure out. It's the random ones (with no pattern or stopping point) that just leave me scratching my head in the morning, wondering where the hell my brain pulled that one out of... Heh, now this is interesting. I don't know if I "like" the chasing dreams, but there is a high level of adrenaline pumping through me during those dreams... and a definite pattern that I forgot to mention earlier, is that I often dream about crisis/catastrophic situations, where ktsp and I are with a group of people, and we're all in a life-or-death event where people have to sacrifice themselves for others, etc. I have said very tearful, traumatic goodbyes to ktsp in my dreams, more times than I can count.

One thing I almost never dream about is my own death. I can only really remember one vivid dream about it--I was shot point-blank in the side of the head in a captive situation, and everything went to black immediately. I was no longer conscious, even in the dream. It was creepy as hell... I'm glad that doesn't "feature" very often.

The most prominent recurring feature I've ever noticed in my dreams is elevators.

I've had several memorable and frightening nightmares about elevators doing strange (and deadly) things. The first of these took place at the conservatory where I took music classes on Saturdays when I was younger. I had it on a Friday night before going to classes there the next day. In the dream, my dad and some other people were trapped inside one of their elevators when the cables snapped and it plunged six stories, killing everyone inside. The next morning I went the whole day there using the stairs.

I had never realized this before, but the reason that first one took place in that building must have been because that's where I witnessed someone get stuck in an elevator for the first time. It was a friend of my sister's and I don't remember how long she was in there, but I do remember her screaming bloody murder from inside, over and over again.

On the other hand, recurrent dreams I have had of flying have been among my very favorite.

Last night I definitely had a weird random dream. I somehow ended up at a resort town with all sorts of attractions--minigolf, bumper boats, hot springs, you know the kind--and was staying in this hotel. I go down for breakfast and find that the Obama family is also staying in the hotel. Very weird.

I rarely dream that I die, but I have had some dreams with near-death experiences. In one I was in an elevator that wouldn't stop going up, and it shot right out of the top of the building, and landed out in front of the building. I was so sure I was going to die in the dream, but instead I was able to walk away, very shaken. I woke up with my heart pounding.

Some frequent themes include my teeth breaking/falling out, driving my car very badly (often totally losing control), missing deadlines, etc. Oh, and I dream of amusement parks (yes, Disney, but sometimes others) a lot.

My dreams often help me sort out my feelings; I usually don't know I'm interested in someone until I have a dream about them. Then all of a sudden they get stuck in my conscious mind.

I rarely have dreams featuring people I know so it's pretty memorable when I do. It makes me wonder how I create them. Are they people I've seen on tv or the street? Are they more or less true representations of strangers or amalgams or completely imagined?

Most of my lucid dreams tend to be what I call "Anxiety" dreams. A classic example is having an exam but being unable to find the room it's being conducted in or waking up too late. Or trying to dial a phone number but repeatedly screwing it up.

I'm not consumed by anxiety in life and have otherwise nonsensical or mundane dreams but those don't stick in my memory.

Sadly, sex dreams are few and far between although I recently had one featuring a member here that was awesome. I think I'll post it in the dirty dreams thread but I haven't interacted with her much so I don't feel comfortable naming her.

I've only dreamed about flying once (that I remember), and it was indeed AWESOME. It was one of my favorite dreams... must have been a couple of years ago now, but I remember it distinctly. I wish that was a recurring feature! Would be so nice if we could just "plug in" our favorite dreams, like a DVD... but I suppose that would take away some of the wonder about them.Actually, no... or very rarely, maybe once it happened that way. I always WANT sequels, especially when I wake up in the middle of one and I try to go to back to sleep right away, to make sure it continues... but it almost never happens. It's as if my brain only assembles each random dream configuration once, and while the next dream might resemble an old one, it's never an exact sequel.I had forgotten about that one as well... it used to happen to me all the time when I was living by myself in the first few years of grad school. Not a dream about them breaking, but that they were always loose, about to fall out... and I was so terrified of losing my whole, adult teeth in my dreams. That's definitely a recurring one, but not very common now. I wonder what the trigger for that one is, since so many people seem to dream about it with no connection between them.I wonder about that as well... who are these faces, and where does my brain come up with them? Sometimes I'll dream about my own husband, but it will be a face I don't know from real life... just an "actor" in his place, or something random like that. The brain is so fascinating in that way.

I wonder if science will ever be able to decipher what kind of neurological activity produces particular kinds of dreams over others... or if that's just something that's impossible to study, due to the highly individualized nature of these things. Then again, if everyone dreams about teeth falling out, there has to be something to it!

I dream of videogames primarily though I almost never remember dreaming at all (not just the "whoops I woke up, I just had the dream, I sorta remember it but now it's gone" thing). When I was playing WoW I dreamed of it at least three times a week for 3 years.

During college I dreamed of missing papers and making bad grades very frequently.

Every dream I remember has me being some sort of hero; the world is freezing over and I have to save my friends and family, zombie apocalypse happened and I have to shoot my way to safety, robbers break into my house and I fight them Matrix style for hours and hours, including running and jumping. I seriously think every apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic scenario I can think of has been played out in hundreds of different ways, with different weapons and in different places. I always win, too. I'm thinking I have some sort of delusion of grandeur or desire to be the 'savior' since thats all I dream about. But hey, who knows.

Many anthropologists have suggested a learned behavior carried through our evolutionary past as the reason for the recurring dreams that include losing teeth or falling to our death. Loss of teeth was a big thing for our precursory ancestors, because they were the most important tool and without them eating (and thereby living) became much harder. Those who survived kept their teeth. As for falling, our long-long ancestors often slept in trees to avoid predators, so falling from the tree while sleeping would be catastrophic. People who claim they snap awake after a dream of falling could be experiencing the evolutionary training that helps up wake up if we're about to fall from our protective perch.

There's very little evidence which can prove or disprove this hypothesis, since we do not know the thoughts of our ancestors. I like it though, simply because it makes a decent amount of sense. And it sure beat's Freud's theory, which claimed that men dreaming of teeth falling out was caused by the masturbatory desires of puberty:

"But here I may draw attention to the frequent 'displacement from below to above' which is at the service of sexual repression, and by means of which all kinds of sensations and intentions occurring in hysteria, which ought to be localized in the genitals, may at all events be realized in other, unobjectionable parts of the body. Yep, I have these dreams too, always my front teeth. I always had the driving dreams back before I got my license. I would have dreams where I had to drive someone to the hospital or something and I would drive badly and crash. I haven't had those dreams in a long time though.

I have a lot of flying dreams, where I am soaring over the trees and buildings. I love those dreams. I have different ways of flying, sometimes it's just effortless and I just soar along, other times I have to jump and flap my arms to get up in the air.

I also have those "evil twin" dreams of my SO, but thankfully not that much. Lately I have been having dreams where I am fighting with my ex. I just had one a few hours ago before I woke up.

Like a few others I also dream a lot about the home I grew up in.

I have more to add, but I can't get the rest of my thoughts in order at the moment.

It's nice to see so many people who are happy to talk about their dreams and hear about other people's dreams. My partner rarely remembers her own and never wants to hear about mine.

I have quite the rotation. Generally, I have a few hero dreams, where I am to save people from "evil." And I have others where I am running away from the bad things. And some I just die, which isn't cool but they're interesting. Usually I can remember what everything is right when I wake up but after that I don't keep it in my mind for long.

I have strong recurring dreams about tornadoes. The people will be different, but every time I am trying to save myself and 1 to ~20 other people in the dream. The setting is always different, but the event is always tornadoes touching down around us and we're doing everything in our power to get away from them, from stealing cars to diving under bridges.

Sometimes I have out of body dreams. Take that as you like, I won't delve into sleep paralysis vs spirituality here. I refuse to.

The rest of my dreams range from weird to silly to anger inducing, but always random in place and topic. Sometimes people I know and love have different faces, sometimes they change faces over the course of the dream. Sometimes I get in a fight and can't seem to land a blow, like I'm punching under water. Sometimes I am fighting with an animal, or attempting to scare it off. During those times my wife wakes me because I am growling like an animal myself and usually thrashing, trying to wrestle the beast down in my head.

I do the same. I knocked out one of my bottom front teeth when I was a teen, flying off a roof. I also broke both of my front top teeth, but had them capped.

In my dreams on teeth, they fall out like baby teeth and it distresses me to no end, sometimes even after I wake up haha.

I have several "recurring" dreams, none of them pleasant. My most common ones are living somewhere with a horrific infestation of spiders or other insects (or spiders AND other insects), trying to escape a tornado, or trying to escape from dinosaurs. I had the dinosaur ones as a child and they have followed me into adulthood. I also have dreams about school - it is the end of the term and I've continuously skipped class and now have to take a final, or I've got an important project/paper in a locker and I've forgotten the combination.

I regularly have dreams about random people from my past - a high school crush, old friends that I had that I haven't thought about in years, people I used to work with. I rarely dream about hubby, close friends, or family.

I remember dreams that involve bears running around killing everyone. These dreams don't happen often but they are pretty vivid and I remember them for a long long time afterwards. I still recall one of my bear dreams from when I was in college (15 years ago) and the dream had me walking to campus and when I got on campus they were handing out all kinds of insane weapons like machine guns and flamethrowers to fight the bears. I ended up on a bicycle racing down a hill firing an assault rifle at a pursuing bear before I woke up. I still get creeped out thinking about it.

I have no idea why I dream of bears in this way I never even saw a bear growing up until I went to the zoo and no one in my family has been mauled by one.

I often dream that I have the powers of a warlock. It's very strange. Sometimes my demon pet will just show up in the dream (usually a felguard these days, but when I was playing more with a voidwalker, the vw would show up). Sometimes spells are easy for me to use, and sometimes I have to focus to be able to perform the spell.

It's the same thing when I fly in dreams--sometimes it's easy, sometimes I have to focus.

I've never had the teeth falling out one, but I've had some real doozies. When I was younger, I was always having to save my brother from snakes (I'm not a fan of snakes). The weirdest dream was a flying snake took him and I couldn't catch him. Another childhood dream was when a zeppelin shot me with a machine gun.

Now days it depends on what is going on in my life. I have the "evil twin" husband one sometimes and, if I'm not mad at him all day, I'm certainly a bit stand-offish. I have cried so hard my chest hurt in dreams before. These usually involve my brother or sister. I think the one that irritates me the most is when I've had trouble figuring out how to fix a problem at work and I will write code over and over in my dream and never get any closer to getting it fixed. Luckily that one hasn't happened in a while.

I will have the same dream over and over and once I realize it's one I've had before, I'll change it (is that possible?) to be more to my liking. I don't have sex dreams too often, but they are the most fun.

To me it seems like the people who don't remember their dreams are really missing out on something.
I wonder what makes some of us remember our dreams so vividly, while others don't remember any of a dream.
dreams are fascinating to me. I purchased numerous books explaining what different dreams meant, but I found they don't really hold true, or there is no set pattern to explain a dream.
I dream mostly about friends of mine who have died. but they are very much alive in my dreams. And, I dream in living Technicolor. Some of the color combinations people are wearing also make me wonder what is going on with that. Very flashy colors, almost neon like??

I just remembered something: my good friend Paul's dreams are narrated by Tom Brokaw. Well, not literally, but throughout the dream, a Tom Brokaw-esque voice describes what is going on, and offers context. I've never known anyone else to have narrated dreams....anyone here?

I'm suprised lktknow was the first to mention the color aspect of dreams. I have always drempt in color but I've read that many people dream in black and white, too bad that wasn't a question, would've been interesting to see the breakdown for TFPers.

I too have the teeth falling out dreams, but mine didn't start until I had a tooth literally crumble and rot in a few weeks (it was pulled into place from the roof of my mouth w/ braces when I was 14, dr. said it was weakened). Ever since then, a few yrs. ago, I have dreams where either all my teeth will fall out at once and I'm spitting out a mouth full, or they will feel loose and I will slowly peel them off like they are stick-on fingernails. Gives me the willies.

For a few years I had constant dreams of flying. Instead of being exciting and freeing though, I was being pursued by something and had to fly to escape. Someone else mentioned flapping their arms, in mine I have to hold my breath and concentrate really hard to "mentally" flap wings and take flight, kind of in jerks and fits like a balloon being pumped full, up a little bit, down, up a bit further, down etc.. Once I'm airborne I then have to contend with not getting caught up in power lines everywhere. Very frustrating.

I found what Jinn said interesting. I have recurring dreams of being on precarious edges, clinging on for dear life from falling (major fear of heights). Also of loved ones dying or being hurt/in danger or becoming complete strangers in their behavior towards me.

One of the weirdest dreams I've ever had (don't remember specifics) was that my husband was my brother. It made sense, we've been together 20 years since we were 17 and know each other so completely. It was still really disconcerning in a "maybe we need to spice things up if that's what my subconcious thinks" sorta way. Too comfortable at times sure, but NEVER platonic, geez.

Thinking about this more, I'm remembering the happy realization I had one day long ago that I could still see clearly in my dreams, even though my vision was going bad. At the time I was scared that once I needed glasses, I wouldn't be able to see without them in my dreams.

What Medusa said about running from dinosaurs in dreams made me think about when that happened to me. I woke up thinking, why did I have a dinosaur dream like that, I'm not afraid of dinosaurs. Then I realized I had fallen asleep with the Discovery channel on, and there was a show about the T-Rex on. It's funny how outside stimuli gets into your dreams.

I have had a few of the tornado dreams previously mentioned. It's usually more than one tornado in my dreams the sky is full of them. I have always been fascinated by them and think it would be fun to be a storm chaser. Similar to my fascination with volcanoes. I have many dreams about volcanoes erupting near where I live, and I have to run away from the encroaching lava.

If you move to Iceland, there's a very, very good chance that your dreams will come true... there are active volcanoes here that erupt every few decades. Bit scary to me, which doesn't make sense since I'm from WA state and we have plenty of local volcanoes as well...

I dream about getting chased a lot, by people or things. In the last dream I had I escaped from an office where everyone was getting brainwashed and I was getting chased by dogs. The longer they chased me, the bigger they got.
I also dream a lot about random people, anyone who I know or have known in the past. My dreams are always in color. I like that.

Gigantic blue-green-black tidal waves.

Driving over bridges that are crumbling.

Trying to drive from the back seat using mind control only.

Having to urinate with no privacy.

These days dreams have been more pleasant.

I am lucky to have epic dreams,
that I am able to remember the next day.
