This video is kind of disturbing for the fact that you see the woman collapse and just laying there still while the people in the room completely ignore her. What kind of society do we live in where someone who is clearly not ok receives no attention or help from the people around. Although it is a psych ward so I'm not real sure of the mental conditions of the other patients in the room. Heck where the hell were the hospital nurses, doctors, or the receptionist in the waiting room? I saw this too, they kept replaying it until I couldn't watch it again. I wish I had some answer why people behave they way they do, I don't. This whole thing reminded me of the elderly man hit and run video from a few weeks ago.

I won't watch it, but I find it disturbing that no one would ever bother to call for help or something. Its crazy how people just ignore others in dire situations

That is such bullshit man.

It reminds me of a similar thing that happened in the 70s I think, in New York. This woman was stabbed to death in an alley, while people were watching. Nobody thought to help, or at least call the police.

It's really appalling that people don't look out for eachother anymore, and while I can kind of understand this happening in a psych ward, I still think it's an inate human instinct to help people.

Maybe it's something that has been abandoned as humans have become more "civilized"...

Quite disturbing. Seems those in the waiting room weren't quite well themselves. Where were the nurses? I hope someone on staff at this hospital realizes their culpability and is tortured with guilt over the loss of someone who was quite obviously seeking help.

I won't watch the clip; the descriptions were disturbing enough. Once you watch it, you can't unwatch it. There are occasions where we can't explain human behavior as much as we would like to; I think this is one of those times.

There is a psychological term called the Bystander Effect, whereby in an emergency, people are less likely to help someone in need when there are more people around, then one or two. That may have been what happened in this case. Still, it amazes me that no one did anything.

There was another case in New York where a 70 year old man was hit by a car and it took 45 minutes for help to be called.

I personally wouldn't just sit and watch someone who needs help suffer, I would have to help them. (It's like watching Cops and seeing an officer wrestle someone on a highway shoulder and people just pass them, I'd pull over and help him beat the other person's ass)

Where were the nurses? They were supposed to be behind the TV screen that fed from this camera. Someone's ass is responsible and they should be charged with whatever they can. Would this not be negligent homicide?

It is also possible she was well known to the staff for doing things like lying down on the floor or repeatedly showing up at the ER for nothing.
You "cry wolf" enough times and people will be less likely to take you seriously after awhile.

Her name was Esmin Green.
She was 49.

She waited in the ER for 24 hours waiting for a bed.
She was not there voluntarily.

This is only the tip of the ice-burg of what goes on here in the US.

There are filth-ridden, under-staffed Veterans hospitals, public general hospitals,
nursing homes and so called 'assisted living' places...everywhere.

The only reason this story gained attention was because someone
got a hold of the video.

I have seen the inside of some very frightening institutions first-hand.

People did lose their jobs because of this one incident.
This particular hospital was under scrutiny and being sued before this happened.

So it's not a case of crying wolf. I got to thinking about this later and even if she were well known I don't see how it would be alright for them to leave her that way for any length of time.

As many here know I used to work in parole and probation. The shit holes people get sent when they don't have money or insurance is appalling. As you, I've seen it first hand. Even those with insurance often are not given proper care, IMO. This even more true for those with mental health issues.

I now live in Mexico. I'm always amazed at the level of care here as opposed to the states. I have friends who e-mail, call whatever who have expressed their concern about medical care. I can assure them I'm better off here then in the states. A friend of mine recently had a heart attack, pretty mild one. He was in the hospital for a little over a week. His IMSS (national health care) paid for everything. I have no doubt he would have spent about a day and half in the hospital in the states before his insurance company gave him the boot.

IMSS here runs about 300-500 a year for expats, depending on your age. Mine runs me $327 a year and pays for just about everything. Yes, even mental health care- which I assume I'll be using regularly any day now.

I've been reading up on the incident and the hospital involved. The place sounds like a world class shit-hole.

The hospitals here are just disgustingly overcrowded and understaffed.

I'm minutes away from a hospital in Queens and several in Brooklyn and regardless of the circumstances, I'd rather forsake immediate care and take my chances riding out to a hospital on Long Island than any hospital in the 5 boroughs.

And the Long Island hospitals aren't staffed with the best and the brightest either. A friend of mine underwent a rectal exam and received a letter in the mail a few weeks later stating the the utensils used may not have been sterilized and that he may have been exposed to a laundry list of diseases...

I couldn't begin to imagine the sort of rage and frustration building in the hearts of her loved ones. It must be unbearable to lose someone so senselessly but I'm most certain the hospital will just throw money and it and things will go unchanged.
