Anti-Emo Riots Break Out Across Mexico

Riot police have taken to the streets of several cities in Mexico to ... defend emo kids?

A series of attacks on dyed-hair, eye-makeup-wearing emo kids began in early March when several hundred people went on an emo-beating rampage in Querétaro, a town of 1.5 million about 160 miles north of Mexico City.

The next week, shaggy-haired emo teenagers were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana's emo kids to stay away from the town's fair next month.

But the so-called emos are organizing, too. Last week, they demonstrated against the violence, pictured above, and Wednesday some met with police in Mexico City.

"They're organizing to defend their right to be emo," wrote Daniel Hernandez of LA Weekly on his personal blog, which has provided stellar coverage of the whole affair.

Music-based subcultures have permeated Mexico's major cities for decades, fueled by constant migration from rural cities. But only in the past year have emos begun to make their presence felt in the streets. In response, many of the established so-called tribus urbanas like punks and metalheads are responding with violence. The emo-punk battles are reminiscent of earlier subculture fights among various factions, like the Hell's Angels fighting hippies at the Altamont Music Festival or the Mods taking on the Rockers.

But while videos of Mexican teenagers with pompadours advancing on equally baby-faced emo rockers seem like scenes from a south-of-the-border version of John Waters' Crybaby, there are ugly undercurrents to the story.

First, by some accounts, the emo subculture is identified with homosexuality in Mexico. As Mexico City youth worker Victor Mendoza told Time.com: "At the core of this is the homophobic issue. The other arguments are just window dressing for that."

Gustavo Arellano, the author of Ask a Mexican and an editor at OC Weekly, said that the sexual ambiguities cultivated by emo fashion helped set the group up for targeting by more macho groups.

"What do you do when you are confronted with a question mark about sexuality in Mexico?" Arellano said. "You beat it up."

Forum posts show similar sentiments. One person wrote on a government youth-website forum, "detesto a los emosexuales," which translates as "I hate emosexuals." Emosexual is an obvious play on homosexual, especially in Spanish, where the H is silent.

Many of the attacks have been planned, or at least fomented, on violently anti-emo websites like Movimiento Anti Emosexual, which features videos of physical violence sprinkled liberally with anti-gay sentiment. Last.fm's Anti Emo Death Squad group has almost 4,000 members.

But Arellano said he thought the riots could have a positive impact here in the US.

"It's a great clusterfuck for the American mind's idea of Mexico," Arellano said. "This teaches the rest of the world that Mexico is not just a bunch of cactuses and sombreros."
One of the reasons that I never dated any mexican girls when I was growing up in LA was because of the idea of men being macho. The girls loved when their men would show aggression towards someone to defend their affections. I find this a bit interesting tangent where in the subculture itself is fighting among subcultures.

We think that if we would just get along black, white, hispanic, brown, asian, etc. No, this shows that we just like to attack those that are different than us, no matter what they are.

Yeah man, punks and emo kids hate each other with the passion of 10,000 burning suns.

if you've ever hung around one long enough, you would know why.

Shauk 03-27-2008 11:11 PM

My ex roommates were emo as fuck all, I'd always feel tempted to take a baseball bat to their knees for all the bitching they did about the simplicity that lies within the most basic challenges in life.

This has "Quadrophenia - Libre" written all over it. Just wait for Will Ferrill's movie treatment.

And why shouldn't we? The majority of emo kids I have met are nothing but scene squatters. They claim to be punk rock, because emo music has been labeled punk by the music industry.

Yes, at their core, punk and emo are pretty much the same thing. It's the lifestyle behind each which sets them apart, and it is a drastic difference. Emo music is a sell-out, whiny industry, whereas punk rock is a D.I.Y., take action movement.

To some, this may seem very silly. To me, it's something to stand for. I have dedicated my life to punk. It's a lifestyle I chose years ago, and I hold a lot of loyalty to it.

I'll be damned if some whiny, depressed kid is going to shit on my scene.

(P.S. I mean no offense to anybody here, and this post is not necessarily meant to be a bash on emos. I'm simply shedding some light into the thought process involved on one side of this dispute.)

Oi!

roachboy 03-28-2008 12:35 PM

i dont understand why folk with different commodity-identities take those commodity-identities so seriously.
this is like fights breaking out between consumers of crest and consumers of toms of maine toothpastes.

I appreciate your stance, but I don't see loyalty to one's lifestyle as a legitimate reason to kick someone's ass because they subscribe to a different lifestyle. oy. vey.

And it seems, at least, that Mexican emo's are 'take action' kind of people. :p

I never said I agree with beating up the emo kids. In fact I meant to say something about how I don't agree with the violent actions in my original post.

I'm just stating where the angst and resentment punk rockers feel towards emo kids comes from.

In order to understand where I'm coming from, you have to understand that for a lot of us scum fucked, street punks, punk rock is all we have. When somebody comes along and wants to claim our lifestyle and not pay the toll, it's not taken nicely.

Anybody will take action once the problem's right in front of their face.

Esoteric 03-28-2008 12:53 PM

I never understood this whole emo thing, and the hairstyles that go with them.

Glory's Sun 03-28-2008 12:59 PM

this reminds me of the DnB kids vs Candy Kids..

damn I hate Candy Kids.. much for the same reason that punkofages already stated. Fucking scene squatters who ruin everything with their pretty lights and etardedness.

It's really no different than political factions fighting against each other. People are passionate about their scene and it comes out in different ways. I've seen several Candy's get their ass beat for showing up to the wrong show.. and they deserved it.

The_Jazz 03-28-2008 01:11 PM

I offer this story as proof that anyone between the ages of 12 and 25 is certifiably insane. And yes, I mean you, kid. You're all crazy.

Get off my lawn.

Don't make me get the hose, you little punk. I've had shits tougher than you.

mixedmedia 03-28-2008 01:37 PM

Well, whatever...guess I'm just too old. Like Jazz.

'Cause as far as I'm concerned you're all 'scene squatters.' Punk is dead and emo is just goth.

Good thing I'm not in the mood for ass kickin'. :p

It's actually birth to twenty-five. But you were close.

Not all of the insanity is a bad thing, but not everyone can be John Keats.

And, yes, mixedmedia, punk collapsed with the underground.

Seaver 03-28-2008 02:52 PM

Am I the only one who's surprised there's so many Emo's in Mexico?

Seriously, I lived the majority of my life in South Texas... and have never met 1!

Charlatan 03-28-2008 03:58 PM

I think roachboy's analogy sums it up best.

There's plenty of room for everyone in the sub-culture soup.

tisonlyi 03-28-2008 04:25 PM

Oh noes! Emocalypse Now!

How shall we deal with the coming gemocidal behaviour, which is sure to bring such misery upon the poor, downtrodden emo...

*adopts depressed posture in solidarity*

ya... i thought that punk burned out once Sid died and Johnny the Prophet self destructed. The Clash went World, and new wave covered the scene with mod-ular music....

Punk.of.Ages 03-28-2008 08:30 PM

Punk's not dead, it has just taken on many different faces over the years.

This is mainly a Mexico City thing. I've lived in Mexico for going on 7 or 8 months now, Ive never seen anyone like the Emo's or punks. I asked my friend he said it a bunch of morons in DF, I guess it made the paper once here in Merida. I watch the news to help with my Spanish, never seen it on there either.

Charlatan 03-28-2008 09:32 PM

Punk is definitely not dead... it's just not anywhere near the mainstream. The point is, who cares if some other subculture is annoying. It just seems ridiculous to beat someone up over it.

Get over yourself (i.e. not anyone here per se, just those who would stoop so low as to use violence in such a fashion).

SSJTWIZTA 03-28-2008 09:53 PM

charlatan,

ive never layed my hands on an emo kid (except that one time on mescaline, but hell i didnt start it)
but ill be damned if i havnt had the urge. those kids just strike some sort of violent chord. they're okay at first but give yourself 5 min.you'll find yourself thinking this:

"HHHAAAAAATTTTTTEEEEEEE!"

Charlatan 03-28-2008 10:01 PM

 I am sure... I knew kids like that in High School. They just called themselves Goth at the time.

I know how you feel. On several occasions I've felt like going up to one and saying "Hey, you know what'd be funny? Your mom dying!" I figure, hey, they want to feel sad and angst-y, bring it on.
