Blu-Ray wins!

They just announced on the NHK news here in Japan that Toshiba is abandoning their HD-DVD business. They cited a few reasons, including Warner and Wall-mart backing Blu-Ray. Toshiba will sell out existing stock, but are shutting down production, promotion, etc., of HD-DVD. If you've been waiting to purchase a high-definition video player based on this platform fight, now you can rest assured that Blu-Ray is the way to go!

I posted this here first, knowing there is a thread in Tilted Technology, so mods, feel free to merge this with the other thread when appropriate.

even If I knew this when the fight started, it feels nice to know that it's over now. Time to go buy a ps3.

It is in consumers' best interests that this happened as soon as possible. Now we can bravely move forward in home entertainment.

*Though the only Blu-Ray I've seen is that dirt racing game on PS3. I've never seen HDDVD.*

I am so glad this is finally over. The same thing with Beta /VHS was a pain in the ass. Now I'll invest in a Blue Ray and rent better movies. Plus, the available movies will probably improve in rental stores!!

Superior how exactly? Both are true 1080p so no video quality differences there to justify a comparison between beta and vhs. The only "superior" factor in blu ray is that it can hold more information than standard HD DVD. I hate when people talks without knowing what they're talking about.
Anyway, it make me happy that all my hd movie purchases have been in blu ray format. This is good news for Sony as well, given that they had lost a lost of propietary format "wars" in the last 2 decades.

Of course, I mean, it's blue!

I am glad I waited for one format to win out before I went into the HD craze.

Finally a clear winner. I bought a PS3 last year and love it, but did not buy it for the blue-ray part, just an extra imo.

Really this does not matter as i bet less than a year from now there be a blue-ray 2.0...etc

It was a matter of days, really, and one could really feel the HD-DVD crumbling as people stopped backing it. Oh well, tough luck Toshiba.

I'll get one when I can rip movies to my hard drive in Linux and play them with MythTV.

Plus I'll wait until they actually come out with movies I want on Blu-ray.

Well, this is sort of happening. Most Blu-ray DVD players that are on the market today aren't equipped to handle certain special features and web-interactive content. You'd have to wait till the end of the year to get a fully working, feature-rich blu ray player. The PS3 is the only Blu-ray player right now that will be fully forward compatible, in a way.

There's nearly no disadvantage for being a Blu-ray early adopter or having the PS3 or buying a Blu-ray player now. The only difference between the new players and the old is whether you can buy shit on their online stores from the Blu-ray disc. Wee.

I'm glad Blu-ray won because Blu-ray sounds way better than ACHE DEE DEE VEE DEE. Yes that's the sole reason.

That's a pretty fucking significant advantage there, stud. Especially when you're dealing with movies at the long end of the spectrum, and especially when most of the distribution companies have abandoned multi-disc packaging in favor of less features, compromised encoding and less high end audio.

I also hates when people talks without knowing what they're talking about.

To tat your tit ( ) Blu Ray while technically better had no real advantage as far as most consumers are concerned. HD-DVD had the better naming scheme, was cheaper, and the standard was more mature. Unless you're a huge movie buff you're not going to see, let alone care that there was compromised encoding or high end audio. I'm glad it's over, but I'm sad Blu Ray won.

I dunno about not being able to tell. Here's a rather good look with side by sides. It's now a matter of really how much someone is willing to pay for that perfect picture...

Apple TV 2.0 vs. Blu-Ray, DVD & HD Cable: The Comparison

edit: sorry I added the title only to see that it was HD cable and not HD DVD to compare with Blu-ray. It is still a nice comparison by itself.

Don't you feel stupid now?

If you missed that .. "more information" == better since blu-ray writers are the next most likely removable media format for computers ..

I didn't even consider that angle, but that's quite true. There is no reason to take a step on the PC into the HD-DVD range and then a few years later take the BD-DVD, or whatever future item Xmedia.

while it makes sense on paper for them to have both and there be a cycle for both, it doesn't make sense to the consumer because they don't want to have so many formats since compatibility is important to keeping costs down.

It would be odd to see a CD/DVD/HD/BD writer with them paying royalties to all 4 companies.

Nice thing about not being an early adapter is I didn't have a horse in this race.

HD-DVD, Blue-Ray, who cares.

When they come out with quality HD porn, then I'll get on the bus.
