TFP: Where is the next step?
A few ideas to expand the scope of the site. Keep in mind that not only are these ideas aimed at keeping everyone happy with the site, but also attracting more people.
1. Public gallery for image posting. Instead of having to post images in the context of a thread, there will be a new section that is specifically designed for image posting. Will contain thumbnail views, galleries, collections, favorites. 2. Role-playing. A forum for writer types to dream up personas and act out scenarios. It could be fantasy, sexual, or conceptual... 3. Webcam Section II (The Revenge!). A display of the latest image captured from our users webcams. Requires at least 12 good webcammers. 4. Your suggestion here. We're brainstorming.

Yeah user participation makes or kills these things. With the podcast, I was able to get two people who said they were interested and then... nothing. I've still got the program ready but without content (or with just the Willravel show) it's not going to work. TFP only works when people get involved.
I'm more than willing to get involved in all the above (cept the webcam thing because I don't have one). I hope other people are interested too. |

Will, don't all new Macs come with iSight?
Wow, those are some great ideas but a little over my head. It may depend n what type of user you want to attract. My suggestions How about integrated chat? Like chat per Forum. EX: Politics chat, Philosophy Chat etc..Sports Chat would be cool too. Maybe even open up rooms for various games in progress? and if you could add a "live" game ticker somehow to follow the game? And of course there will be Sexuality Chat... I think by adding a chat function attached to the various forums, then it would open up different possibilities in real time, and possibly attract more people for some casual or in depth chat. Maybe we could try it out on a trial basis with say: Politics, General Discussion, Sports and Sexuality. |

Jorgelito: i like your chatbox per forum. but Seeing as the chatbox for 1 page was crashing the forum, i'm not sure it will be brought back.
as for the other options, they're not that great. and i mean that it's not something i would really use. they might be awesome for other members. To be honest, i'm not sure theres much i would add to this place to make it better. ps: and wilravel: the podcast was a good idea. I didn't have anything to add to it but i would be listening to them all.

I'd be willing to do the webcam thing, but I'd want to know for sure that it's a go first; I'd have to invest in a webcam, so I don't want to do that unless I have a reason to. Quote:
My other thought is maybe a Tilted radio. I don't know how that would work in terms of copyright and such, but we could in theory set up a streaming server. Maybe have different users set up playlists (or even do some live DJing)?

Old Mac doesn't have a cam, nor does my laptop.
The roleplay idea could be interesting. The public gallery sounds like a great idea and to keep the "other" photographic threads separate there could possibly be a subthread or section labeled "For critique" or something similar. Edit: Since we've been talking a lot about shopping lately and where to buy what, what about a thread specifically related to shopping, products and vendors where we could relay our experiences to help save others aggravation on their purchases. Or would that be opening a can of worms?

There is a better quality of discussions here than on fark or Digg but the usual contributors are smaller. Also since these subjects come up from time to time I wind up repeating myself to see if there is input from new players. I have noticed that threads started by one of the admins seem to get better input than others. I find fark and Digg interesting for the diversity of subjects covered but it is like drive-by posting unlike many contributions here. Even the one liners here seem to be better. |

Ratbastid and Martian: Musical collaboration is an excellent idea. We have a lot of musicians here and I like the idea of there being a space where you could all share, collaborate, etc.
My idea was to revamp the Creativity Section so it is far more participatory and proactive than it is now. Its setup now just seems too passive. I would rather there be a Creativity section with basically 3 subforums: Music, Visual, Literary. Instead of people talking just about music they hear, musicians could discuss, share, and collaborate on music they make. I also would like to see Visual Arts go in the same direction. I think Literary Arts would tie in to Halx's 2nd idea. Of course, the best way to see if it would work is to do it. Members have as much input in the direction of this forum as anyone else. If you want to start collaborating on Arts, start doing it. Don't wait for us to tell you. If you wait for that, you'll wait forever. All it takes is for someone to start.

Didn't we have a picture gallery once before, and then were told that only "professional" quality pictures would be acceptable in the future?
Didn't we have "role playing" once before, led by Tecoyah in the Moe's forum? Is there some reason to believe that these subjects will work better now, than they did before?

Contests can be good. Whether it be a creative writing competition, photography competition, or even a photo scavanger hunt.
Run a contest once a month. When appropriate, have the entrants be anonymous (sent to a mod or admin, then posted so the members don't know whose is whose), and then have a 3-5 day voting period. Let the winner be a mod for a month, or give them some other trinket. Advertise the contestants via mass email. Not spamming all the time, but just once a month or so send out a message to all members informing them what the contest is. My guess is a lot of people would visit more often if they had occasional reminders.

Does anyone know of any hosting solutions other than Myspace for this kind of thing? I'm not opposed to Myspace as such, but Flyman's comments set another idea rattling around in my head and I'm wondering if we can find somewhere to host mp3's for direct download. Would it be possible to set aside some server space to host original content, or would that be too bandwidth-intensive?

How about a Tilted Real Life? There seem to be posts now and then where members meet up, hang out, do shit and whatnot.
A place on the board where these meets, events and such can be announced, discussed and shared would perhaps allow others to become interested in meeting other tfpers in public group atmospheres also. Or it may lead to stalkers and creepy encounters. Who knows?

Yeah audio hosting can quickly become a strain on bandwidth. Basically for every 5mb of audio data that actually gets changed on a collab project you can probably expect to see 100mb thrown away on people interested in hearing how it's progressing but aren't going to make any changes to the track. Eh, it's kinda hard I'm thinking getting everyone on a standardized set of collaborative tools would be difficult. Who's gonna agree on the formats? *shrug* |

OK I have often made threads that fit well in more than one category. For instance, I have a thread that fits perfectly either in T.Tech' or T.Knowledge.
What about the ability for members to create threads that are viewable from two different categories?

an oekaki board might be a neat idea. it's a board where instead of making a topic, you draw a picture using the board's software (which is similar to paint) and post it, then people can reply and post about it. i was a member of one briefly a few years back and it was fun despite the fact that i can't draw well at all
as for the main ideas in the first post, i think they're great if there's enough interest in them. personally, i can't see myself really supplying much content to any of them, so i'm not any help. |

OK, I know there is a member's playground only accessible by members. Journals are also only viewable my members. Why not just have an option to tick that would prevent any thread being accessed by anyone not a member?

I suggest that we start a DVD swapping service a few years ago, but that was nixed pretty quickly by the American members who just preferred to do it with Netflix.
