Does anyone know of any hosting solutions other than Myspace for this kind of thing? I'm not opposed to Myspace as such, but Flyman's comments set another idea rattling around in my head and I'm wondering if we can find somewhere to host mp3's for direct download. Would it be possible to set aside some server space to host original content, or would that be too bandwidth-intensive?

Yeah audio hosting can quickly become a strain on bandwidth. Basically for every 5mb of audio data that actually gets changed on a collab project you can probably expect to see 100mb thrown away on people interested in hearing how it's progressing but aren't going to make any changes to the track.
Eh, it's kinda hard I'm thinking getting everyone on a standardized set of collaborative tools would be difficult. Who's gonna agree on the formats? *shrug*
